I bought an iPad mini retina because hardware wise it's identical to the iPad Air but $100 cheaper.

iPad 2 WiFi 16GB (running 3yrs + now) because at the time it was the latest iPad around. Will buy iPad Air 2 (16 LTE) when it launches though :)

iPad Air 32GB WiFi

Why, because I had an iPad 4th gen and the new clinic I'm opening needs an iPad, so I buy the Air for myself and the clinic gets the 4th gen.
Same as the year prior, I had a 3rd gen and our main clinic needed another iPad, clinic got the 3rd gen I took the 4th.
I got the 3rd gen as a present for myself at launch, this was the 1st iPad I personally had so I waited until the retina display hit then I jumped.
I pre-ordered my wife a 1st gen ATT 32GB which she has upgraded to a 4th gen and gifted the old 1st gen to her father.

We have 2 MiFi's , 1 Verizon and 1 ATT so there's no reason to get a LTE iPad anymore.

Also just to add, I would have never personally upgraded from my iPad 3rd gen if I had not already been buying iPads for the office.
