Everyone knows that Apple favors the darker colored products, always has.

The first iPod was white and slow, replaced by the iPod Touch which was grey and fast. The white MacBook? Replaced by the grey MacBook. The white iPod Shuffle? Replaced by the grey iPod Shuffle. White iMac? That's grey now too.

They make the lighter colored products heavier. They make the lighter colored products in lesser factories. I'm surprised you don't know this.

I need some buying advice: I leaning towards Silver iPhone X, but I like the SG one too. I don't care about scratches much (and no, I don't plan on using a case most of the time), but since both models look great to me, I guess I would take the SG one if I knew it scratched less.

Most videos on YT say that you can see the scratches more easily on Silver, however - some claim that since the SG has a pigmented steel frame, that when you do scratch it, it will show the silver underneath (and I still remember my black iPhone 5).

So, does anyone know which one is more susceptible to wear & tear?

Look, I don't care about a scratch here and there that much, but I do to feel that premium look in my hands. There were some Apple products, like the original iPhone, that gained character when they got scratched. Maybe this is the case with the Silver one?

Aside from the scratches, my problem is that on some photos, the Silver one looks better, but on others - it looks like it's made of some cheap aluminium foil to me. I can't see it in store myself, because my country won't get the X until the end of the month, so I'll be preordering without having a look in the store.

The Silver one looks more fun this year, but I may end up playing safe and getting the SG one. So, any thoughts? As I said, if the Silver one is more prone to scratching, that may help me decide.

I have the silver X and think it will be very durable. Since the back is almost white it doesn't seem like it will show scratches very easily. The silver surround might get scuffed up, but so far carrying mine around naked I don't see any scuffs.

I really thought hard about the silver vs black in terms of looks. I ALWAYS get the darkest phone, especially because of the white bezels in the past on the lighter phones. This time around with the black bezels, and that really really nice silver (which is really a pearl white IMO) I went with the silver. Sure the silver surround looks a bit cheap and gaudy kind of like the plastic silver on a Samsung phone 5 years ago. But it feels nice and high quality and I was ready for a change from all black phones.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read all day (which is saying a lot, considering this is the internet).

Therefore I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no possible way you can be serious. So... I must commend you on your trolling.

Buy silver one it's the best this year. SG looks like last year's 7 plus jet black

I got a Silver because it was the only option available on Swappa for the time I wanted my new phone. The guy was also willing to bring it to me. Once I opened it up, I changed my mind. While I did want the Black.. the silver looks amazing. It doesn't really look white on the back, it looks more pearl and the sides and the camera bump have the silver accent. Reminds me a lot of the more expensive Apple Watch Stainless Steel models. I think they actually made the Silver/White stand out this time and they made the front black for the first time in a very long time -- and it's an amazing and appealing combination. Usually I can care less for the White iPhones.

And that's a first, cause I prefer the black on each iPhone iteration. But the SG X reminded me a bit too much of the 8+ from the back. I REALLY like the olive glossy stainless steel on the edges, but I prefer the back of the Silver more. Makes me feel like I have a damn brand new phone and it's VERY noticeable that I have the X. Not many phones have a white back and black front.

Plus there's a reason why Apple is advertising the X and using the Silver more for the ads. It's gorgeous!

I have the SG and on Saturday,my friend pulled out her silver and wow it did look good but the silver band just looked odd and too blingy. We compared phones and both agreed that pound for pound the SG just edged it but the silver would be more popular with girls as it was more feminine

^ I took that screenshot from the Engadget X Review...

Space gray rear: More fingerprints on back compared to off-white.

Silver banding: More fingerprints, more scratches but easier to remove with a polish.

Now all I want next year is if Apple combines the two.

It boils down to banding or rear. When I first saw both in person, I started to prefer space gray. I even said nearly a week ago what a joke the silver X looked! How could I be so wrong and doubt my initial instincts.

I saw the silver X last Wed. Then again Fri at the Apple Store. Both colors were next to each other and I held them both to compare. Initially, you will like the sg more since it's more stealth and uniformity.

The silver might look tacky and weird at first. But it's that band, man. That bling. Put every black Android phone next to each other with the X. From a distance, you would recognize the silver X right away especially if you can see the white underneath.

Silver X. Looks MORE premium. Put the sg X next to the jb 7 and sg 8 and you may not tell them apart except for the X's taller height. If you're like me and like 99% of the masses who doesn't give a rat's *** looking at the rear, then silver is the way to go.

I suggest you check out DetroitBORG's unboxing of all colors from iPhone 7, 8, and X. The jb 7 and sg 8 look too similar to the sg X. The sg X just seems like the same ol', same ol' safe choice.

I got a few opinions on both.

Silver:
Pro: more attention grabbing, more interesting color combination, shiny stainless steel band. Fingerprint less noticable on the back

Cons: scratches will be more noticeable, a bit similar to past Samsung phones. The back's white is like grayish white. I'd prefer it to be more like metallic white (Probably harder to resell than the Space gray due to most people preferring the "safe" Space Gray.

Space Gray:
Pro: stealthy look, scratches probably less noticeable. Probably will be easier to resell later. Black is always a safe color choice.

Cons: too much like the 7 jet black, bezels appear to be a bit thicker due to the black band combining with the black bezel, fingerprint more noticeable, the back in bright light appearing grayish which I don't like. I wish the back was true black. I also don't like the band color. It's like a weird mix between shiny and dull.

Overall I'm leaning toward the Silver.

^ Imagine if all those phones' displays were OFF and you were viewing them all from 20-30 feet away in that angle. If that was the silver X, you would recognize it right away.

Only get sg X if you truly prefer uniformity, stealth, one-tone, and the rear. Get the silver X if you enjoy viewing side angles and how the light reflects on them. Premium like seeing the first iPhone for the first time.

Just depends what you prefer. Banding vs rear. Silver X is the one for me. Space gray just blends in with other Androids. My first instinct was correct all along.

That was me this year, fancied a change from black and as others have said the SG does look a little like the 8+ from the back. Re scratches, I'd suspect the sides on the silver will show more than the SG but the back may be different and the front of course should be equal.

My issue is I just cannot bring myself to use a case, I have purchased the apple leather and a couple of clear ones off Amazon but just prefer the feel without a case. Have always done this and my luck will run out eventually.

Thanks everyone! Really great points. I think I'm leaning towards Silver, but man, a tough choice!

I'm really grateful for your replies - some really thought out responses!

I notice this every time I see a space gray iPhone X. It just looks thicker than the silver, even though if isn’t.

Plus it looks like the jet black iPhone 7, and I absolutely hated that one once I saw it in person. That’s coming from someone who always prefers the black or space gray versions.

That being said, the silver iPhone X looks much more “premium” in my opinion. It has a very classy, elegant appearance.

ive had black iPhones since the 3g.
The only time I went white was iPhone 5 after I got a slate model and it showed chips in the first few days of not even using it much.
Hated the white version of the 5 but I felt with it for 2 years. Black since then also.

The silver X is probably the sexiest looking and feeling iPhone I have ever seen/held. The stainless band and glass back just feel smooth as butter. It reminds me of the original iPhone. I was waiting for them to have a lighter color back with a black front as I thing its the best color combo they have ever done.
The grey is a little boring this year for me. At least looking at the 8's. Its nice but its a little different dark grey/black nothing special in my eyes. It looks clean but of course it does its black.
Im running the X careless as id feel like I was doing this amazing feel phone wrong by not having it the way it was made.
No scratches on mine yet. I got a cap cod if I get some small scratches in the stainless. Another plus...

I am worried about the edges though but I do wonder if the SG may show them less initially but then if the coating wears off show them more? No idea how the SG edges have been coloured?

I do genuinely think that the silver looks nicer but I would consider swapping it in for the SG if it was more durable especially as I am likely to remain caseless. Doing this though would require returning and ordering another and waiting the quoted 3-4 delivery time. I know the shipping dates are shorter in reality but it would not be a straight swap.

I am a bit torn here as well- currently have the SG with Apple Black leather case. Really like the combo, looks so sleek and blacked out. I'm tempted to swap for the silver and go caseless. Have a few days to decide- I do like the all chrome border better, just don't like the "silver" back that really is white(or very close to it). Not sure why they couldn't make this an actual darker shade of silver, would look amazing. I can tell you for sure though that the black chrome coating will def show less scratches on the outside, if people care about that.

I was undecided before seeing them in person as well, but very glad I went with silver. The black front, mirror sides and pearl back is such a classy and unique combination. The SG is fine and feels just as premium in the hand but is just a little bit boring. If the SG would have been really black - like the jet black 7 - it would have looked a lot better than this dark, slightly hazy grey IMO. Also the SG shows finger prints much, much more. The silver sides will scratch more easily, but the scratches won‘t be very noticeable; if the SG sides scratch, the silver underneath will show and that will look much worse IMO. One thing that hasn‘t been mentioned: the bezels of the SG look bigger because the bezels and the dark SS band kinda blend into one. Get silver is my advice.

For the first time in my iPhone life, I opted for the silver one. I have no regrets, its a beautiful phone.

I never liked the white front, that was present in the iPhones that pre-dated the X, but since the color is on the back and I have a case on it. It really didn't matter which one I selected.

SG is the envy of all who see it and is unmatched in quality and looks. Silver heads have to convince themselves that their phone is reminiscent of the classic iPhone but those opinions are inaccurate I tell you. SG blends into the night and provides a feeling of badassery you will not be able to get with the vanilla alternative.

Be the man your peers will envy, with the color that says “I can take your life with one hand if need be”. Buy the SGX.

This needs to be a commercial... ASAP.

Apple always uses the white model in advertising.

SG - It's like holding an all black piece of glass. It's looks seamless - less design breaks. I really like how the black screen melts into the band while the silver creates a frame while viewing from the front.

I do really like the pearly silver/white but I don't look at the back that often so the choice came down to not seeing the band.

I agree with a previous comment the silver actually looks a little bigger. Also mentioned that the silver band looks a little tacky but feels great.

I do see why Apple and reviewers favour the silver for advertising but the black is just so appealing for that stealthy batman look.

Seeing people wandering around the Apple store with the SG in hand while picking cases looked very futuristic to me. Alot of happy people buying either versions. Alot of buzz which is a great time to be instore.

What a great choice - a true piece of the future.

(Already missing mine after returning but the talk of an X Plus next year has me day dreaming again).

Yeah, I'm the kind of guy who wouldn't even use a phone if I didn't have a skin waiting for it out of the box. But I always buy my phones outright and sell them. This year I got sick of doing that and plan on just paying monthly and turning it in at the end of the year for a new one. So I don't really care much about scratches as long as they accept it back, and AppleCare takes care of any drops or major damage. I'm just sick of covering up my phones all these years.

After carrying it around like this for a week I don't think I could ever go back to covering up this beauty.
