I'm somewhat waiting. I won't be buying my Macbook until late august (before going back to college), whether it's updated or not. I wouldn't complain about an update, but I do like the current black Macbook as well :)

Took the plunge yesterday and bought the a new macbook.

I took advantage of the free Ipod deal for an 8gb red nano. (reviews of touch sound quality turned me off of the unit).

I also cashed in on the $100 printer rebate which I'll use as a birthday gift on a Canon Pixma.

I'm a shareholder and from a business standpoint it makes no sense for apple to release a new unit with the Ipod deal. One of the key strenghts on of the company has been their ability to forgo holding large, useless inventory stocks. The back to school promotion seems to me to be a straight inventory play. While the macbook's have had some internal updates I'm sure some of the more external aspects of the units (screens, case, batteries, etc) have been ordered in greater quantities since the creation of the current macbook line.

Personally I'd be very surprised if Apple releases before Sept 15th. With the problems Intel is having with the new chips, along with the inventory issue and the current focus on moving the Iphone releasing a new unit makes little sense.

Frankly im getting tired of seeing a new thread on this everyday. Once and for all:

APPLE WILL RELEASE A NEW MACBOOK WHEN THEY CHOOSE TO, AND THEY WILL NOT LET YOU KNOW IN ADVANCE! ANY SPECULATION IS POINTLESS, AND IF YOU MUST SPECULATE - SEARCH FOR AN EXISTING POINTLESS "WAIT OR BYE NOW" THREAD!

(before my morning coffee, i will be much nicer in an hour. But still.).

I agree that Apple will release new macbooks when they chose to, I mean who else would chose for them? But I disagree, they will let you know in advance... in a way. Something this big has to have it's own little press event, like the iMac last year. So my guess is we will know about a week in advance unless it isn't a major revision and they are just updating processors.

anyway, i'm waiting for a new macbook with:
montevina,
4500 GPU,
7200 rpm
250GB HD,
4GB,
maybe alu,
LED backlit,
1-2 pounds less weight,
slightly smaller footprint,
2.5GHz Penryn,
long battery life,
edu discount,
ipod nano,
$1199
well, $1399 seems more realistic;)

+Multi-touch trackpad would make me very happy.

Don't mean to be offensive, but sounds a tad insane.;) Even if physically possible, 2 pounds off would make it as light as the Air, thus making the Air irrelevant. Even 1 pound is probably wildly optimistic. Probably .5~.75 pounds lighter would be a great achievement, assuming same footprint.

I'm with you on smaller footprint (permitting more weight loss), maybe by about 1.3 inches:D

Is no way it would have a faster processor than the low end MBP. Where would this 1-2 pounds less weight come from? If Apple could do it, work be the new Macbook Air (trust me); and that price...

Have fun waiting

hope for smaller motherboard because of higher integration in montevina, smaller battery because less power needed, smaller becel for screen results in smaller computer. well, at least i can hope but i agree it's unlikely. it wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

Scratch out 1-2 pounds less weight (<1lb), 4GB of RAM (2GB), and the 7200RPM HDD (5400RPM), and it's believable, but astonishing.

well 4GB Ram i can do myself unless apples prices are crazy. then i do it in a year. HD is no problem at all, can do it myself later. it will be more expensive but i can defer the costs for upgrades till x-mas;)

why not the touch :D same space if there giving away the 8gb and its touch u cant go wrong there
i have a iphone. i need an ipod for sports.

+Multi-touch trackpad would make me very happy.
i don't really miss the multi touch trackpad. maybe if lot's of programs make use of it it could get onto my wishlist.

Last year I waited until late summer and bought the updated silver imac with the existing ipod rebate. If the updated computer still qualified for the deal last year I don't see why it might not happen this year also.

Took the plunge yesterday and bought the a new macbook.

I think you're right but hope you're wrong. I don't have a need for a Touch, but was hoping to be able to take advantage of it when the new MacBooks come out. I start grad school September 9, so I'll wait up to a week or two after that date to see if the new one is announced. BTW, I'm typing this on a usb keyboard because my 6 year old Sony Vaio's keyboard is broken, case cracked, speakers blown, and battery gone. My best case scenario would be the new MacBooks coming out before 9/15.

so is the touch not good? i thought its much much better then the nano????? it has internet, music, tv, e-mail....

4th Gen iPod
5th Gen iPod
2nd Gen iPod Nano
3rd Gen iPod Nano
iPod Touch and
my brother's iPhone

they all sound the same on my Sennheiser CX300, original iPod headphones, my same output speakers and my car stereo...?

maybe... i went deaf hearing music too loud o_O?

i dont own a touch but i had my friend's for a day because he didnt know how to jailbreak it so i had to do it for him. but its the same as the iPhone minus the phone part. its better than the nano in way that you can jailbreak it and install 3rd party apps on it (games, to do list, etc, weather, e-mail, and much much more) i see it as same as nano just bigger screen, full touch, and an awesome built in browser!! i am going to get one, Im pretty sure that apple will drop the 8gb and make the 16gb 299 and 32gb 399 (or maybe introduce a 64gb?) im waiting to see what the next gen has ipod touch will have (flash support with safari browser?) personally if i was getting it for free with the notebook offer id get the touch.

p.s also played with the touch many many times at my near apple store which is at a near mall where i work because its so tempting i almost buy it every time im in the store lol :)

Count me in

Well, count me in as currently waiting; Everytime I think about just up and getting a midrange MB white, I start to write out the 'facts' about the unannounced new update, and conclude I have to wait; I don't have to have one now, but it would be convenient; Don't want to wait so long for the Nehalem, and if I got something near-term I could maybe ebay it after nehalem-based units are available; I was hoping Jobso would say something about them at WWDC but nothing, and Apple ain't talking until they're pretty much available. So if Intel delayed until 7/14, then Montevina-MBs would have to be on or after that, and now that is just a month away; I can hold out -that- long;

I'm also playing "the waiting game".

The Macbook is going to be my first mac (that is solely mine) so I might as well wait for Montevina, even though Nehalem is coming out next year. I can't wait......

they probably won't come out til after the school year starts, about a month and a half before christmas if anything... i don't see them coming out during this back to school deal...

I'm in the same boat as you. This computer is going to be mine and only mine lol so I might as well wait around for the newest update. I'm sick and tired of sharing the DELLosaurus 17" Inspiron with my bro (I swear that thing is bigger and heavier than an iMac). Can I make it so you have to type in a password while booting up?

my macbook doesnt even have a touch track pad :( thats what i get for first gen or otherwise it never worked

people are going to be saying the samething about the first gen of the new one's that are coming out soon, but instead of a touch track pad it will be some new feature they release in a year or two... if you need a computer get one now, why live in a constant state of buyer's remorse... it's depressing thinking about all the people with kick ass computers thinking they got screwed for not waiting a month longer... it's just stupid...

I'm waiting not for a new model but for hopefully a price decrease in either refurbs or current stock price. I have an iBook G4 and direly want a macbook, however debt, debt and the economy stupid have me a bit strapped for cash.

Unfortunately someone told me not to expect a price reduction in the current gen once an update is announced. Thoughts? I thought a slight price reduction was always the norm. Am I completely off base?

In the past when apple has had the back to school promotions, even though a new nano was released a month before the end of the promotion they still restricted the rebate to previous gen nanos only. It wouldn't surprise me if they did the same thing if a new macbook came out during this promotion too.

I think you have things straight, but just to clarify: Apple's new generation of MacBooks will likely have the same pricing as the current generation does now.

When a new generation is released, generally the recently-outdone last gen models go to the refurb store.
