Sorry to bump up an old thread but this seems the best place to ask

ok so my friend got a 3gs which was apparently unlocked (i think it was supposed to have been a simfree factory unlock? dunno if u get them or not)
anyway he tried to run blackrain to jailbreak it and that just put it into recovery mode so i tried restoring to 3.1.2 but itunes wouldnt let me and all i seemed able to do was do it there way and do a 3.1.3 upgrade which i thought must have been what was already on it if it wouldnt let me install 3.1.2

anyway its back up and running and i have cydia installed but i havent managed to activate it yet, i plugged it in with an o2 simcard in it and itunes told me something along the lines of i cant activate with this sim please insert the proper simcard so i did it with the original vodafone sim (which is what i want in it) so long story short is it possible its locked to vodafone? as i thought it would either be 02 or at&t (if hed been sold a us model)

also i know you cannot unlock a 3.1.3 3gs but is it possicle to activate/hacktivate this phone?

also how do i tell what network its locked to and will it activate properly with a sim from that network as all im getting right now is the "waiting for activation this may take some time" message

If your phone will not activate with the SIMs you have put in it, then it was not factory unlocked. By updating to 3.1.3, you have upgraded your baseband and made it impossible to unlock your phone for the present.

As for activation, you have already hacktivated it if you are able to reach the springboard and see that you have Cydia installed. You can use it an an iPod for now, if you like; just leave the SIM out of it. You will not be able to use it as a phone, however, except on the network it is locked to.

And, no, it is not possible to find out what network it is locked to except by trying various SIMs in it. Or your friend could ask the person he got it from.

cheers for quick reply

i didnt "hacktivate" the phone to begin with i just did it the way your meant to through itunes with the stock 3.1.3 firmware downloaded through itunes now all i get is "waiting for activation. This may take some time."
but it let me onto the springboard fine and its been like that for last 24hrs, only today did i use spirit to put cydia on the springboard, also it will show the vodafone logo and have 1 bar at the top sometimes but its not allowing calls to be made

does this mean its able to use vodafone? and if so why do i still get waiting for activation?, if not would i just try plugging into itunes with diffrent sim cards?

im not sure why itunes wont activate it but it will let me use springboard

any ideas?

:edit:
when the phone is connected to itunes with a vodafone sim in it it will sync e.t.c.
but when its connected with an 02 sim it pops up as "the sim does not appear to be supported. only compatible sims from a supported carrier may be used to activate iphone" so it would appear to be locked to vodafone but wont activate properly

Iphone 3GS Not Unlocked, Stuck in Emergency mode

I'm also experiencing a similar problem with my iphone 3GS. Here's whats happened:

• I bought a 2009 iPhone 3GS 3rd Gen (no bootrom) updated to latest firmware 3.1.3 through itunes. Originally jail braked with Blackrain.

• When restoring the custom pwnage firmware from iTunes, got a 16xx error
• I tried to reset the phone then use Blackrain without the SIM iphone but when it did reset still in emergency call mode. I read that Blackrain maybe in a loop?

• Unplugged and tried to restore to original ipsw which i had backed up before. Then I get itunes erro stating that the device could not be authenticated then exits out of itunes

• This process looked like it went normal, but when it was finished the iPhone restarted into emergency call mode.

• iTunes gave the error The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported – I don’t have the original sim bought through Telstra

• Performed various Jailbreaks: Blackrain, redsn0w, pwnage.

Nothing worked -------> EXCEPT: When I run redsn0w, it goes through the JB, restarts and functions 100% normally, but THERE IS NO SIGNAL.

Does anyone have any ideas. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

ok so a quick update, turns out the guy who sold it (or someone he stole it from) reported the phone as lost/stolen and blacklisted the imei and must have done it after it had been delivered to my mate as it worked to begin with
anyway cheers for the help :) and hopefully ebay will sort the problem out and get the guy a refund

So is it still not possible to unlock a 3G running 3.1.3. My buddy wants a iPhone to use abroad and I need to unlock it for him but need to know if all 3G iPhones are unlockable. I know the 3GS on 3.1.3 is not.

You will have to wait til June 7-10. That is when sherif_hashim will release his unlock or thats when he said he would.

I think he is assuming that's when the 4G and 4.0 will be released. He's going to wait for both of them actually to be released before he burns his exploit. Sherif_hashim has proved himself patient, and I'm sure that won't change.
