yep. same screen....after following your JB pwnage instructions. thus it seems to be factory unlocked.

doesn't solve the problem though, it still won't work with any sim card...

any ideas?
cheers!

So you made a new custom restore IPSW, made sure to uncheck activate phone and it still gives unlock message but won't work ? And you made sure iTunes was pointed at the correct IPSW ?

Weird.

Maybe try running Ultrasn0w see if that makes a difference ??

it actually activated after a bunch of time with a spanish sim. when i switched to my normal norwegian sim card it didn't work.

now i went through the entire process again and it gives me a "waiting for activation" screen. i'll leave it overnight and see what happens.

thanks again

Decided to jailbreak my 3g today in anticipation of selling it on ebay in a few days. I had upgraded to the 3.1.3 and latest baseband. However the information in this thread was very useful.

I downloaded the 3.1.2 IPSW
Jailbroke it using redsnow and the newly downloaded IPSW file.
Used Fuzzyband to downgrade the baseband.
Then installed ultrasn0w

Everything worked great!

Tested it out using my girlfriends T-Moble SIM and worked like a charm!

You are one of the lucky 10% with 5.08 bootloader

When you go to sell it, I would list this in the description along with a note that FuzzyBand can always downgrade the baseband.

Should up the price a little bit.

Hello everyone,

I have an iphone 3g which I recently updated to 3.1.3, my bb also went to 5.12.01

Is this possible to jailbreak? It's already factory unlocked.

I've been searching for info and so many different sites say 3.1.3 can't be jailbroken no matter what, then some say only 3g.

I've been trying to jailbreak it with redsn0w and sn0wbreeze,

with sn0wbreeze i keep getting errors, after I shift click restor and select the custom ipsw, some seconds after, it will tell me there was an error and it couldn't be restored. I have tried even using the original 3.1.2 firmware and I get similar errors, usualy 1602, etc.

With redsn0w I use 3.1.2 firmware and everything goes smoothly, i get to the "Done!" screen, but nothing happens on my iphone. I don't get cydia nor it is jailbroken.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you for your time.

I saved my bricked phone. thanks to thelatinist

this thread really helped me save my phone. thanks alot! thelatinist FTW!

Anyone interested in a 3GS for AT&T ... Since it "accidentally" upgraded to 3.1.3 I cannot use it here anymore ... Should work fine in the States though :D

Why did I leave my phone connected when the gf was using the laptop ... Why ????

Oh well ...

I guess I'll wait ... Don't have the shsh or anything ... Tried briefly with another IPSW ... But I knew it was useless ;)

Fun thread this is though :p

Are you selling the phone?Serious? How much do ask for it?Yeah, you are correct. If it's a 3Gs,and on 3.1.3,you are basically "done"...No unlock,no jailbreak for that.:(:(

WooHoo I JB my 3Gs with 5.1.3 and 5.12.1 !!! (MAC user)

Granted I have an older 3GS (purchased Sep 09)... it probably has the old bootrom (i supposed). But anyhow, to encourage who did accidentally upgraded (or had to for apple store reason), you can re-JB your phone!! Unfortunately, the baseband will remain 5.12.1.

Here are the steps that I took:

1) Added the server line in the host file. Visit Saurak site for detail instruction.
2) Enter DFU mode (hold both home & lock button for 10 sec and then release lock button but hold home button). iTunes recognized my iPhone in recovery mode but the phone screen is completely blank.
3) Restore using 3.1.2 FW.
4) It will "almost" finish but then 1015 error will occur. Press OK. The phone will then be at recovery mode (USB cable to iTune logo).
5) Restore using the same 3.1.2 FW again. I encountered the same 1015 error again and the phone is now in recovery mode.
6) Run Blackra1n. The phone is JB but it is not activated. Unplug phone from USB.
7) Run latest Pwnage. Deselect "Activate Phone" in option and create custom ISPW. When finished creating custom ISPW, select phone has not been pwned.
8) Put phone into recovery mode (turn off phone. hold home button while re-plugging in your phone)
9) Back in Pwnage, select the option where the phone has never been pwned. Pwnage will then load the JB software again (with Cydia) and move the phone to recovery mode again.
10) In iTunes, restore now with the custom built 3.1.2 FW.
11) After restoring, your phone should now be fully jailbroken and activated!! You can now restore the backup from iTune and Cydia.

HKY: Please stop cross-posting to multiple threads. One place will suffice. Also, I'm not sure if you are trying to add new info to this thread, but this information (or links to it) is included in the first post.

Yeah seriously thinking about putting it on Ebay or something ... How much is it worth? It still functions fine and has no marks on the screen and only light scratches on the back from using it. But it has had protective skin for most of the time.

I should check prices I guess ... :D

Sorry but the instruction in the first post didn't work for me. Using redsn0w will get me stuck in an endless recovery loop and blackra1n doesn't activate the phone. The first post didn't include any mention of using pwnage. So I don't see how my post is not adding new info to this thread.

If I saw a clear solution on this thread, I wouldn't have to spend hours trying different methods and then spending the extra time to post. I did plenty of reading and many people in my situation are clearly frustrated with being stuck with an un-JB 3.1.3 phone. I simply just want to help and speak of my own experience.

Hello,

just a question: have been your iPhone jailbroken before? I've a 3Gs downgraded from 4.0b to 3.1.3, never JB, bootloader 6.4, FW modem 05.13.03 Model MC133... do you think I could follow your instructions?

Thanks

we're t-mobile users and I had been looking for a factory unlocked iPhone for my mom for a while so i could avoid dealing with worrying about avoiding firmware updates. But the best i'm seeing though is $400s for a used iphone 3g. And the new OS won't give much functionality to the 3g (like multitasking).

So now I'm looking for a locked AT&T iPhone 3gs so I can unlock myself. I Want it to be as close to new as possible. All I have to look for is for the firmware to be 3.1.2 correct? And once I get it, just make sure I never upgrade the firmware when I connect to iTunes? Is there a way to make sure that I am never asked? If it was just me, I could avoid it but since it's my mom, I'm scared she might miss it. I'd like her to be able to sync to iTunes and everything on her own but if the risk will be there, I'll tell her to just let me handle it.

And if the worst did happen, most probably the phone wouldn't be usable until a certain amount of months after the next big OS is released since that would probably be what's targeted to be hacked, correct?

All I have to look for is for the firmware to be 3.1.2 correct?

No. If you wish to use the phone on T-Mobile, you will have to make sure that the baseband (modem firmware) version is 5.11.07 or earlier. It is possible for a phone with 3.1.2 to have the newer baseband if it has been downgraded from 3.1.3.

You also should research and be aware of the implications of the new bootrom, which results in tethered jailbreaks for newer 3GS phones. Although it is likely that an untethered jailbreak for 3.1.2 devices will be released soon, there are no guarantees. Read my Tethered Jailbreak FAQ.

And once I get it, just make sure I never upgrade the firmware when I connect to iTunes? Is there a way to make sure that I am never asked?

You will be asked the first time you plug the phone into your computer. There will be an option in the dialog box to not ask about future updates.

And if the worst did happen, most probably the phone wouldn't be usable until a certain amount of months after the next big OS is released since that would probably be what's targeted to be hacked, correct?

Yes, it is likely that, after the release of 4.0, an untethered jailbreak and unlock will be released for the 3GS.

^ Thanks for the breakdown. So on top of firmware 3.1.2, I also need to make sure of baseband (modem firmware) version 5.11.07 or earlier.

And I went through your tethered jailbreak thread. If I understand correctly, to avoid having to deal w/ tethered jailbreaks, I should lookout for iBoot version is 359.3 and try to avoid 359.3.2 or 359.3-2. Or, if I can't find out iBoot version, try to check 4th and 5th digits of the serial number and hopefully the number is less than 37. Otherwise, I'm probably looking to some inconveniences if the battery dies or the phone has to be reset.

you have a line in that thread in the first post that says:

Can I still jailbreak my phone?

Yes, all iPhones are jailbreakable.

... but that's not true for 3.1.3 correct? something to update?

The screen on my 3GS was flickering like crazy so I took it to the Apple Store to get it fixed. They replaced the screen and upgraded it to 3.1.3. I'm an absolute idiot for not having my SHSH on file. I never filed it because I thought I was careful enough not to load the new firmware. I want to punch Apple in the face right now for my own stupidity. :(

latinist, yes the links are there, but HKY actually shows us the steps it took for him/her to get it to work. This is helpful, the links are not as helpful.

Thank you HKY and thank you for cross posting as I never would have seen your solution.

^ could you elaborate? I was ready to move onto looking for an iPhone 3g to avoid all the issues that come w/ purchasing an iPhone 3gs (certain firmware, baseband, and tethered jailbreaks/iboot version , etc). What has changed?

The problem I found was that when I was looking on craigslist for iPhone 3gs, it was easy to know the firmware, but hard to know the other information

spirit jailbreak was released http://spiritjb.com/

it will jailbreak a 3GS on 3.1.3 but there is still no unlock for the upgraded baseband that comes with 3.1.3.
