These articles are implying that that jailbreakme is merely doing just that, jailbreaking and nothing more. I guess then it is safe to use the service.

I hope people maliciously target those who don't update their phone to fix a security leak so they can jail break their phone more easily.

I still think the guy who exploited the hole to create the jail break would have done a better service just reporting it to Apple.

Now people are not going to update their software and people are going to create malicious sites and mess up the phones of people who don't upgrade.

If people choose security over the ability to jailbreak they deserve whatever happens to them.

Here are a few reasons why Apple cares:

  • It's important for Apple to maintain a consistent user experience for the the iPhone owner and everyone else who knows an iPhone owner!

(If someone picks up the phone and notices something they go, "This phone sucks! I'm getting a droid." They won't go, "Is this jailbroken?" Apple knows this.)

  • Some people who Jailbreak don't RTFM, they break their phones, and Apple can't tell if a phone has been Jailbroken if it is just bricked without any signs of why.

(I've replaced a phone like this—most of the "geniuses" have no clue.)

That sounds righteous but with that thinking, you're just as good, or bad, as the people you're accusing of wrong doing.

I swear some of you people are incredible with your defend Apple at all costs stance. Apple doesn't like jailbreaking because some random person might see a jailbroken phone crash and say "This phone sucks, I'm buying Android."? LMFAO. That's rich. Epic LOLz. :D

Apple cares about power, control, and of course money. The user experience is the least of their worries no matter what Jobs spits which is nothing more than retail rhetoric.

Regardless, Apple is a business.

They provide a fine user experience, in turn, for revenue.

App developers are compensated for their work, via the semi-open App Store.

All parties benefit here - it is intended especially for consumers who prefer a problem-free, less-complicated environment.

For those who don't, jail-breaking will always be available.

... beware, iFans are dying slowly,...
What the hell does this mean? From 2006, one Gartner study showed that the average age of a male head of household buying a Mac is 39.4 years old, while it's 41 for a PC. Most younger tech folks are on a strict budget and probably buy Windows stuff or the less pricey Mac toys. 40 years old... hardly approaching boot hill, son.

I'm 44. Still kicking.

Don't see why Apple really cares . There would be a lot less iPhones to replace/repair since jail-breaking voids the warranty.

I think most people jailbreak to unlock anyways to use on other carriers besides AT&T. I bet AT&T pushes Apple to avoid that from happening.

Today I unlocked my phone for shiggles. I threw my T-Mobile SIM in and here's what I got.

I think I'll stick with AT&T 3G. Thanks though.

Agree to an extent. My point is that they have zero care about people, the consumer. What they care about is the system that does benefit all parties involved but obviously great benefits Apple.

Please speak English. What you wrote was not.

Apple cares mostly about AAPL shareholders and increasing shareholder value. That's their duty. NEVER, EVER FORGET THAT.

You may think Apple has zero care about its customers and only cares about its shareholders but many people, including me, would disagree.

I have had nothing but amazing service and support from Apple for every product I've owned. Compared to other companies, Apple is a million miles ahead.

And they keep coming up with new products that are easy to use, deliberately built for a purpose, and meet the needs of millions of consumers.

On the profit side, sure Apple is a business. But it's interesting isn't it that Apple hasn't paid dividends to its investors for years. It keeps reinvesting its profits in new technology. As someone who has analysed many companies, I can tell you that history shows the most successful companies are the ones who do actually try and make the best products for their customers. Companies that fail are ones that are focused on high volume low quality product, short term profit at any cost, market share, cost cutting, high debt levels, etc. As far as I can see Apple as a company has none of those negative attributes that cause companies to fail.

On the flipside, I'd really like to see a list of the "Apple is evil" sayers and the amazing products they provide to their customers (or work they provide to their bosses), their levels of customer service, how they respond when their customers (or bosses) demand every last drop of blood, and after all that how much of their profits are re-invested in new innovation.

I disagree. Apple cares about consumer in the first place (i think they still care) and shareholders are happy because consumers are happy.

Jobs et al really don't have a clue.

A 350MB download for a pissy 50kB fix is a ridiculous way of doing things. Laughable in-fact.

iTunes is a bloated piece of ***** that takes up obscene amounts of resources just to do something simple like add a couple of songs onto your iPhone.

I used to be a massive Apple fan but I am slowly losing patience with them. While their products are world class (with the exception of iPhone 4), their attitude is unprofessional at best.

The sooner Turtle neck Skeletor stands down, the better.

Exactly! Big companies aren't here to comfort you; they're here to MAKE MONEY.

I think updates fixing the holes that allow jailbreaking is the main reason people don't update.
That makes no sense. If your phone is jailbroken, it's already fixed. If you haven't jailbroken it, you're going to want the vulnerability fixed.

If you want the software update and a jailbroken phone then you're going to have to wait. Apple doesn't approve or support jailbreaking therefore they have no reason to help enable it.

Apple is well knows for being sloppy in securing their software and even more third party software. It's quite shocking that just moving a slider the site was able to jailbreak my iPhone. At first I was amazed and cheering how easy it was. Then I realised how potential dangerous this huge gap in security actually is.

Well I shouldn't be too shocked, we already knew Apple was number one on the list for the company with the most vulnerable software on todays market. Another number one position for Apple :)

What's the big deal?

350MB is the same as 2 big games, or 1/2 a TV episode!

It takes 2 minutes to download and another 2 to install. There's probably some good reason for it to be all in one file (after all, Apple do know how to do partial upgrades - all the OS ones are). I imagine it's safer to replace the whole OS than to try and patch in place... and over the millions of iOS users, even 0.01% extra failure rate would cause Apple big support problems if updates didn't work.

Let's face it, the most popular reason for Jailbreaking is so that kiddies can steal software and install warez. Apple need to stamp down on it, so that developers' confidence in the app store stays strong, and they continue to build and release great apps. If you fail to produce a secure app store that provides income for developers, then you end up with an Android situation - with the corresponding poor range of apps.

But downloading it can still take ages, even on a fast pipe, because its not you alone, but say 10 million others as well who try to download the update.

And it is totally unnecessary these days. Look at what Mozilla.org did when they introduced incremental updates [for Firefox]. Works really well, and people just love it. Have been begging for it, and for years. Time for Apple to follow suit.

It's all about money. Apple has to pay a license fee. And the only advantage for Apple is that it wipes jail breaks. Nothing more.

It will probably never change, or maybe when updates are done over 3G, because then AT&T will scream for a change.

Oddly enough, the most secure iPhones, until Apple releases their update, are the ones that are jailbroken with PDF Loading Warner installed. iPhones without PDF Loading Warner, including all unjailbroken iPhones, are vulnerable to malicious code execution without the user knowing about it.

I personally don't like jailbreaks. I find it way too slow and messy. Cydia is too confusing to use and I don't like having to restore my iPhone time after time cause something I downloaded from Cydia stops my iPhone opening.

So I'm happy that Apple is quick to address these issues and make iOS more secure. If you want to Jailbreak, fair enough...just don't update. I mean this update will be something like 4.0.1b or something like that. It's a minor update to stop you jailbreaking. Just don't update, and wait till 4.1 is out and when a jailbreak is out for that release.

ha ha ha! Well, jailbreakme.com 3.0 coming soon! and so on and on and on and on..... and by the way... Apple is loosing the coolness more and more... beware, iFans are dying slowly, young users don't care of Apple history and today it doesn't matter who introduce the first gadget...it who build the best one. tic toc tic toc.... people are getting aware.

Did you RTFA? If you can download an application to your Mac that can jailbreak an iPhone, that is not a risk for iPhone users - nobody forces them to download and install that app. If an iPhone can be jailbroken by visiting a website, then it can be hacked by visiting another website, and that is something that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

That makes no sense. If your phone is jailbroken, it's already fixed. If you haven't jailbroken it, you're going to want the vulnerability fixed.

Who says that jailbreaking fixes the vulnerability? If you intend to jailbreak your iPhone, _install the update as soon as it is out_ and look for a different method of jailbreaking, one that works using an app on your desktop.
