Most cellular modems cost far more than $130.

Apple's markup on their products versus their actual manufacturing costs is about 50%.

It's also why I don't but this it BS that it cannot be produced in America. Rubbish, what they mean is that they earn more by manufacturing it in low-cost countries.

How many of you like loosing money?? Do I hear crickets? NO ONE does!

I don't like losing money which is why my retirement strategy isn't based on the resale value of Apple iOS devices. Others have already said it better but I'll add that there is value in the use of something. Usually the use outweighs the difference in resale value. For example, buy something and never use it then sell it for less than you paid. That's lost / wasted money. However, if you use the heck out of it and sell it for less than you paid that isn't lost or wasted money. Today's resell market for these types of electronics is brutal, but Apple holds it value as well or better than the rest.

With the launch of the ipad 4 nearly 6 months after the 3, they're going against this trait. It may not matter to a lot of people but I like knowing that what I have is new and will be new for a little while.

As has been said many many times before, the ipad 3 still works as good as it did for people as when they purchased it. Apple is clearly trying to get their launch dates within the Sept / Oct period, so it had to be done.

Thankfully, I returned my ipad 3 when I realized that the CPU and the fact it did not have any global frequencies didn't cut it for me. Whereas, the ipad 4 and the mini are both a buy.

Today's resell market for these types of electronics is brutal, but Apple holds it value as well or better than the rest.

It's also Supply and Demand 101.

As more and more people buy apple products, they flood the market. Therefore, the niche factor is gone and prices drop.

For example, I sold a used unlocked iPhone 4 32GB in Feb for $550. Whereas, since the iPhone 5 was launched and AT&T started unlocking their out of contract handsets, I cannot break the $295 mark today. That's a $250 drop in 8 months.

$600....so you lost $129 for using it for 6 months.....I would of jumped on that. im sticking with my 64gb because I need it for work and cant be without for a month nor am i going to lose big money trying to sell a month from now.

How many of you believe Apple sells you the best product they can when they release something new?

Never! It's not part of their money making scheme / model.

Case in point, the new iPad mini. Apple is going to start you off slow with a non retina display, an A5 chip; so they have room to improve, make money and keep you coming back.

Crack dealers take advantage of people in a similar way too.

In contrast, when the Nexus 7 came out it featured the best it could. Quad core processor, high quality display, and a value priced memory upgrade. Take note Apple.

I guess I am the other end of this spectrum. I still have a 64GB iPad 1 wifi+3G. I just pre-ordered a 64 GB iPad Mini wifi+LTE. My iPad1 is still usable for my needs, but wanted something a little smaller and something newer. I will probably be able to sell my iPad 1 for $300-400. The iPad 3 is far from undervalued and outdated imo.

I'm convinced that we've just seen the future. I firmly believe that Apple has moved to a cycle where the next major revisions of OS X and iOS will be announced at WWDC in it's floating early summer timeframe. iPhones and iPods will be announced in September and iPads in October.

Mac refreshes/updates will be announced as technology and market forces dictate. It makes much more sense. Updated consumer devices will now be announced in the period leading up to the Holiday quarter instead of spring and mid-summer.

Plus it puts development and production expenses in previous fiscal year which presents some accounting advantages.

I don't understand MR policies. You have these noobs come online posting these really rhetorical threads and yet they are still around posting more garbage.

I don't go on a mercedes forum complaining how I got shafted buying a new C class and yet the honda dealer offers me an special edition accord for 1/4 less fully loaded but the C class has best resale value however, the honda beats it in dollar value ratio.

Apple is selling a brand name on top of that, quality build (al + glass) - think about this - which other competitor device offers the same thing? The problem with you folks is that there is a PC industry and yet apple uses that industry components as well. Every electronics is shared amongst each other so of course if a garbage can pc can be sold for as little as $199, you will compare it to an overprice apple device. Unfortunately, that's not how it's perceived. You don't like that, then GTFO.

As for games, maybe you don't like it on the iPad, but give it a shot on the competitor device and you'll see how crappy they run. Apple doesn't fret on specs alone, but they do give you the best GPU on the market in these devices. You might as well go with a garbage android tablet just to surf the web then. Hell, you can buy a netbook to do the same thing.

Lol. Want to know about depreciation, buy an android anything. Will be totally obsolete, unsupported and running an ancient version of the OS within 6 months.

bullcrap, the Xoom runs Jellybean and its hardware is considerably outdated by today's standards.

I agree. The one thing that has been pissing me off is that we've been sitting on the exact same capacities for what at least 3/4 years now. The whole line should have more capacity with the same price they charge now. Flash memory has gotten dirt cheap you can't tell me the memory chips cost the same as they did back in 2009. They continue to sell products at the same mark-up even though pricing for components goes cheaper.

Why don't you just not buy any of their products? Problems solved! Complaint after complaint on MR is futile. Send 1000's of emails to tim cook and see if he gives a damn.

This is a discussion board so I can give my opinion whenever I feel like it.

I'm selling my 3rd gen, but only to pay for getting the 4th. I'm not happy with the short product cycle this time, but it is what it is. I just want to get out of mine before it devalues more.

And yes, the 3rd gen is perfectly capable...I just was planning on keeping it for a year and then selling it for a fairly predictable amount. The cycle was pretty well known, and I knew when I'd have to do it, so this is a bit of an unpleasant surprise. I'm pretty sure this will be the new cycle going forward, so I can't really imagine how they would go about it without making some people grumpy.

Just done the same thing sold my ipad 3 for £390 on ebay and preordered the ipad 4 only cost me £110 after 6 months usage not bad at all.

"How many of you like loosing money?? Do I hear crickets? NO ONE does!"

You car, over the past 5 years your house, etc... The list goes on in regard to things you pay for that lose value. Most things you purchase, lose value.

If it's about money, then take the $600 you got from selling the iPad 3 and invest it. The investment that comes from buying technology, is that you have a useful piece of technology, something that makes your life easier. I'm sure the iPad 3 you bought has done that. If not, maybe you don't even need a tablet... there's value in that

I know how you feel. Just a few months ago Honda unveiled their new accord. I just bought the older version 6 months ago. I just dont get how these companies can continuously screw with their customers by releasing newer improved versions. My next car will definitely be a Toyota.

Haven't pulled this out in a while but I think it's apt

I really wish they compared the ipad mini to the new NookHD.
It's being released next week and has much better specs- 1gig RAM, card slot, much better screen, just as thin and light- and much cheaper.
sure Apple has more apps- but at this size- it's a bloated e-reader so it's a fair comparison and IMO- the Nook HD wins hands down.

Apple gets their other products right- but they lose to the competition when it comes to tablets. And that should be.
Apple needs to stick to great laptops and software.
leave the toys alone.

One of the nice aspects of buying Apple was that you were almost certain to have a "new" device for almost a year (presuming you get the thing when it comes out). To me, that's part of the "premium price" that is paid for the device. I would bet one of the top concerns for consumers of tech-products is fear of obsolescence.

Just because the device isn't "new" doesn't make it obsolete. Your iPad 3 continues to work and continues to be supported by Apple, and I'm betting it will be until well into 2014, since they're pretty much obligated to do so until the last of the AppleCare+ agreements run out.

And THAT is where the premium lies. Not in whether my particular hunk of metal and glass is the newest thing for a year, but that it will WORK and Apple will support it for a year and longer.

Then I suggest you go cold turkey, and stop buying Apple's "crack."

Apple isn't putting a gun to your head and forcing you to upgrade. Selling off your perfectly-good iPad was your decision, and yours alone.

And if you're really that obsessed with appearances, then consider this: what difference is there visually between an iPad 3rd generation, and a 4th generation iPad? That's right, none. No one's gonna know if you spent $500+ in March, or $500+ in March and then another $500+ now unless you specifically tell them. And I'm betting they'll scratch their heads wondering why you threw away all that money.

How many of you like loosing money?? Do I hear crickets? NO ONE does!

But every time Apple does what it did with the 3rd gen iPad, we all loose. How many 3rd gen iPads do you think were sold in those 7 months?

I'm sure Apple knew it would be releasing an updated 4th gen iPad when they sold you the 3rd gen. But they will never tell you this. Apple is becoming a money hungry company.

They are starting to lack true innovation and value.

You bought an electric device to turn a profit for resale? No one is forcing you to upgrade. It's not like your 3rd gen iPad is crap. There is always going to be something bigger and better. Part of the technology world.
