The ipad 2 hasn't been discontinued has it? The ipad 2 did NOT get a full ios 6 upgrade. ipad 1 has been discontinued & did not receive ios 6 in any form.

ipad 3 has joined ipad 1 in the discontinued bin, I won't be counting on much of anything in terms of upgrades. All Applecare + obliges them to do is to fix or replace ipad 3 if it breaks, it doesn't force Apple to provide software updates.

I am aware that the iPad 2 has not been discontinued. What I meant by stating that the iPad 2 still gets updates is that the iPad 2 is not as advanced as the 3rd gen. iPad but despite that, it still gets updates.

You can't say that because the iPad 1 stopped getting updates that it will be the same with the 3, the iPad 3 is far more superior.

Seriously the only thing you need is a laptop (c2d and up) and a smartphone (iphone4 and up). You honestly don't need anything more than that. Once you have realized that apple has no power over you anymore. You really dont have to keep up with the joneses.

Just simply ignore it.

ipad 3 owners have no such guarantee! ipad 3 is a discontinued product, ipad 3 owners now sit in the same boat with those folks who own an ipad 1.

Discontinued product = we don't have to bother to really support it & we don't have to worry at all about providing software updates for it. In fact it won't surprise me in the slightest if ios 6 is the last full update ipad 3 owners receive. I foresee one more crippled ios update for ipad 3, sort of like how ipad 2 got ios 6 but didn't get siri. One more limited update perhaps, then that's it.

I'll say this once more:

Anything iPad 2 can do.

The iPad 3 can do.

Ok?

If you think the iPad 3 will join the iPad 1 on the zero update list, you are a fool.

The iPad 3 morphed into the 4, it's the same design, the same weight, the same dimensions, the same panel technology, everything except the port, front camera, and chip. It's actually EMBARRASSING to call the iPad 4 the "4th Generation".

Apple no longer sell the 3 because the 3 got a spec bump and became the "4". Apple want to have Mini - Non Retina - Retina as their line up. The Retina Display is a pull, a major feature to make people pay the extra £100 for the top model. It made ZERO sense to offer two Retina models, one £100 cheaper, which in turn would have made them drop the iPad 2 price further or even drop the product, leaving the only non-Retina option as the Mini.

When the iPad gets lighter, thinner, an IGZO display, a REAL Quad Core CPU (not just GPU), then I'll ditch my 3. And by ditch, I mean hand it down to a family member.

Disclosure: I haven't read through the comments in this thread, just solely replying to the OP.

I understand your post and what you are saying. I wouldn't say the problem is with Apple, but with what Apple has created - a deep and powerful consumer cycle.

You yourself say you have had every iPhone since launch. This shows that you are part of that cycle - and I'm not saying you're stupid or anything like that, but it shows you the power Apple has.

Everytime a new product comes out I catch myself trying to justify it's purchase. I had a first gen iPad, and when the iPad 2 came out, I was dying to buy it. Luckily my wife said no. After a couple of weeks, I realized I really didn't need the iPad 2. My first gen iPad was keeping me satisfied.

When you actually stand back and look at what you're purchasing, its worth it. What's not worth it is thinking about how you're going to sell your product in a year from now when the next gen comes out. If I enjoy my first gen iPad for 3 years or so, then I think I've done quite well.

I think the problem is sometimes we lose sight of the reason we're buying these products in the first place. And kudos to Apple - they're amazing at creating a frenzy and hype around products and it shows in their sales numbers. This is obviously due to their superior products as well though. Everytime I walk into an Apple store, I feel like I need to buy something.

I'm not going against you at all by the way, just wanted to give my two cents as to how I view it.

This post is actually spot on correct. The iPad 2 can actually play games better @1024x768 than the ipad 3's retina. But when the ipad 2 loses support, so does the ipad 3 since the hardware is nearly identical. The true successor is the ipad 5!

I've been a long time Apple user. I've had every iPhone from day one and early this year purchased my first At&t LTE iPad 3 gen 32gb. I quickly sold my iPad 3 when Apple announced the iPad 4 gen recently. This move totally devalued the 3 gen iPad. I paid $720 plus tax, Gazelle offered me $400, Amazon offered me a gift card for $540, I sold it on eBay for $600.

We all talk about Apples high product margins like they deserve them. Like it's ok. Apple only gets away with this because they have no real competition. Apples product quality, support and ecosystem are unmatched.

But as much as I love Apple, it's time for a real competitor (Google + Motorola maybe) to force Apple to be more competitive with their pricing. Someone that's going to produce a quality flagship phone and tablet with support and more standard features like expandable memory for less.

A 16gb product memory upgrade shouldn't cost $100 like it does in iPads and iPhones. An LTE antenna upgrade shouldn't cost $130. Production cost and technology only gets cheaper with time, but we keep paying the same price for the same thing.

I will continue to wisely purchase and sell my old Apple products in the future because they are the best. But I'm not happy with Apple.

So, you're so desperately unhappy at the situation, you sold your perfect iPad 3 to fund the 4th gen anyway? Does that just mean you are perpetuating the first world problem, that in reality you have created?

Also, you said they are the best. Yes, you're probably right. Do you think then the best things in life don't come at a premium? Of course they do.

Lastly, I imagine you have got good use out of your iPad? If you paid $720 + tax ($800??) it means it's cost you $28 a month (ish) to own. Sounds about right to me, and fairly reasonable. $600 on the used market isn't bad to be honest. id be happy with that.

A confusing and contradictory post.
