Apple isn't putting a gun to your head and forcing you to upgrade. Selling off your perfectly-good iPad was your decision, and yours alone.

Agreed. Just because Apple releases an update, doesn't mean you have to buy it. I am still using an iPhone 4 which I got the day it was released.

WHY WHY WHY do people think that because the iPad 4 is coming out the iPad 3 is obsolete. Is it because of the lightning port or something? Honestly, if people can still use their iPhone 4's and 4s' then you can use your iPad 3.

I don't understand what's with the supply and demand "I need the latest and greatest NOW!" attitude. Big deal, a new product came out.

Believe it or not, I know some "brave souls" who still use an iPhone 3GS. :D

Just because the device isn't "new" doesn't make it obsolete. Your iPad 3 continues to work and continues to be supported by Apple, and I'm betting it will be until well into 2014, since they're pretty much obligated to do so until the last of the AppleCare+ agreements run out.

And THAT is where the premium lies. Not in whether my particular hunk of metal and glass is the newest thing for a year, but that it will WORK and Apple will support it for a year and longer.

Tell that to the owners of the 2008 WRX STi. In fact, I was looking for what year it was that the STi owners got boned and found this forum post:

http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/new-cars-prototypes-forums/134303901-2009-wrx-screws-2008-owners.html

I find out that had I waited a little bit longer for the same amount of money I would get the Aero package and 40+ more horsepower? What kind of crap is that? I emailed Subaru thanking them for that little gem and told them my next car will most likely be a Mazda 3 Speed, or G37, maybe a GTI. I hate how they go and change stuff every year. It's annoying. This is a BIG change and it's not like with the iPod where we'll get a rebate if we trade it. The car's still worth what it's worth. Not like they'll add $2,000 or more in trade value for our getting screwed.

lol.

Point is, Apple knew that they were going to be doing this to people. No matter how you justify it, from a business perspective, monetary, holiday, whatever you want to cite, it does kinda suck for people who bought the iPad 3. Especially if they are outside of their 30-day return window.

Let them think their iPads are devalued I say!!! Last year iPad 3 came out I got a unbelievable deal on a used iPad which I flipped on Craig's and pocketed $100.

You paid $720 and resold for $600?? Exactly how "devalued" was this.

And where's the rant posting about how Gazelle was lowballing you?

Dude paid $120 to rent an ipad 3 for 7 months.
Like $0.50/day and your value fell 16%

Those are excellent numbers

So what should Apple have done? Stop selling iPads for 30 days before each new one comes out?

Should the people who bought a 13" MacBook Pro 15 days ago feel screwed because the rMBP just came out? Maybe Apple should suspend all sales for a month every time a new product comes out just so no precious snowflake gets their feelings hurt.

No wonder why people make fun of Apple fans. I'm embarrassed to be amongst you.

Your iPad 3 still works. You don't have the latest any more. Don't allow your self-worth to be dictated by the newness of your iPad. If it is, you need more professional help than a new iPad can provide.

I've been a long time Apple user. I've had every iPhone from day one and early this year purchased my first At&t LTE iPad 3 gen 32gb. I quickly sold my iPad 3 when Apple announced the iPad 4 gen recently. This move totally devalued the 3 gen iPad. I paid $720 plus tax, Gazelle offered me $400, Amazon offered me a gift card for $540, I sold it on eBay for $600.

We all talk about Apples high product margins like they deserve them. Like it's ok. Apple only gets away with this because they have no real competition. Apples product quality, support and ecosystem are unmatched.

But as much as I love Apple, it's time for a real competitor (Google + Motorola maybe) to force Apple to be more competitive with their pricing. Someone that's going to produce a quality flagship phone and tablet with support and more standard features like expandable memory for less.

A 16gb product memory upgrade shouldn't cost $100 like it does in iPads and iPhones. An LTE antenna upgrade shouldn't cost $130. Production cost and technology only gets cheaper with time, but we keep paying the same price for the same thing.

I will continue to wisely purchase and sell my old Apple products in the future because they are the best. But I'm not happy with Apple.

First, you paid $720 for a product, used it for 6+ months, then sold it for $120 less than you paid. Nothing was devalued. Even if a new one hadn't been announced, you couldn't have done much better.

Second, you are angry because Apple is doing exactly what you want them to do. You demand innovation and lower prices, you want to see a reaction or preemptive action against competing products. That's exactly what just happened. You don't compete by releasing your competitive products 6 months late.

What Apple has done is doubled the performance of the Retina iPad and kept the price the same. All in less than a year. Margins are lower on the new product because the components aren't as mature.

This 6 month update wouldn't have happened if MS hadn't come out with the Surface. It is the first worthy competitor to the iPad, and Apple moved to defend their market position. Otherwise they would likely have stuck to milking a year out of their component supply.

So which do you want? Innovation brought on through competition, or not releasing new stuff until you can get the most out of your resale value? You can't have both.

Leonard1818 put it best above. It's just bad business practice. We are all fools if we think Apple didn't have the 4th gen planned when they sold you the 3rd gen.

Apple knows their customers are die hard followers and a lot of them will continue to upgrade when new models come out.

clearly you had choices in electronics. you chose Apple.

you stated, there are other competitors in the market. you just so happened to purchase Apple time and time again. and now you're griping?

I really don't think Apple is actually threatened by the Surface.

How many of you like loosing money?? Do I hear crickets? NO ONE does!

But every time Apple does what it did with the 3rd gen iPad, we all loose. How many 3rd gen iPads do you think were sold in those 7 months?

I'm sure Apple knew it would be releasing an updated 4th gen iPad when they sold you the 3rd gen. But they will never tell you this. Apple is becoming a money hungry company.

They are starting to lack true innovation and value.

I did not lose any money...I don't buy my apple products because of resale value. I buy them because they fit my needs. Plain and simple. Figure anything you buy, once you open it, drive it off the lot, use it, what have you, it is no longer worth the purchase price. Just how it works.

Never understood the people who sell their iPads before an announcement and go without it for a few weeks to a month. I use my iPad everyday for work, as well as personal stuff. It is part of my work flow now. So really not practical to be selling it early, and going without. Seems to me it really isn't something you need...which is fine, we all buy stuff we just want.

All companies upgrade their product lines, most on a shorter time line than Apple. Complaining about your resale value, doubt Apple cares about your resale value, or any other company, and their product, for that matter. But they love the fact you always want the latest they just put out. You make them money, because your reselling, even if it is not the initial person you sold it to, somewhere down the line, someone is getting an iPad they did not have. Then they will be using the app store to buy stuff.

If you want to be angry with someone, you can look no further than yourself, one for being silly enough to think any company cares about your reselling profit, two for being silly enough to think said company isn't happy you feel you always need to have the latest and greatest, and three, for thinking any company, especially a high-end products company like Apple, isn't out to make money. Just look at how much cash value Apple has....they are a corporation, one that has an excellent marketing department. They just like all the other companies want to make money. But just like all the other highend companies, they have (for the most part) excellent customer service, and quality products. Which helps make paying the extra worth it, and proves the adage, you get what you pay for. Which is also, just like other highend companies, their is a high resale value on their products. None of that has changed. After all you proved that by getting $600 for your resale.

Selling my ipad3 and buying the ipad4...my reasoning

Obviously, the spec upgrade on the ipad4 is not worth upgrading, but here's my reasoning. I have a 64g AT&T LTE iPad 3. During the product announcement last week, I locked in a resale price with Gazelle of $550. So if I sell it and buy the 4, it'll cost me about $300. Right now, the gazelle price for a similar ipad2 is about $250. One could infer that if I hold on to my 3 and wait for the ipad5, I may only get about $250 for it. So, if I sell my 3 now, it costs me $300 and I get an upgraded device until the 5 comes out. Then when the 5 comes out, I sell my 4 for $550 (presumably) and spend $300 to get the 5.

If I don't sell my 3 now, but decide to wait for the 5, then it costs me the same $600. The only difference is that I didn't get to enjoy the faster (heavier) ipad4 with a better FaceTime camera.

Of course, this whole scenario depends on my being able to walk into an Apple store before 11/22 and buy an LTE iPad, which Apple says will "be ready to ship mid-November". I'm not sure when they'll be in the stores. We'll see.

No bad business practice would be undercutting their own sales, and not having at least gen 6 iPad in R&D right now. They do what every other profitable business does.

And there are so many leaks about what is coming down the pipe line for Apple, that the diehards already know a few months out. Average joe doe not, but then again they don't care.

ipad 3 owners have no such guarantee! ipad 3 is a discontinued product, ipad 3 owners now sit in the same boat with those folks who own an ipad 1.

Discontinued product = we don't have to bother to really support it & we don't have to worry at all about providing software updates for it. In fact it won't surprise me in the slightest if ios 6 is the last full update ipad 3 owners receive. I foresee one more crippled ios update for ipad 3, sort of like how ipad 2 got ios 6 but didn't get siri. One more limited update perhaps, then that's it.

Apple isn't putting a gun to your head and forcing you to upgrade. Selling off your perfectly-good iPad was your decision, and yours alone.

And if you're really that obsessed with appearances, then consider this: what difference is there visually between an iPad 3rd generation, and a 4th generation iPad? That's right, none. No one's gonna know if you spent $500+ in March, or $500+ in March and then another $500+ now unless you specifically tell them. And I'm betting they'll scratch their heads wondering why you threw away all that money.

That's right. You don't have to buy every single iPad Apple releases. Why did you sell your iPad 3?? This isn't the first time we see Apple updating their iPad line, perhaps this time it was faster, but, they'll be releasing an iPad 5 later next year (assuming they stick with their Spring launches), will that frustrate you and make you sell your iPad 4 (assuming you buy one)

I know, how dare they release the iPad 4 when they have all those A7x chips sitting in storage waiting for the iPad 5 release!

This release did not devalue your iPad in any way. If they had not released the iPad 4 it would theoretically be worth $25-50 more, but you wouldn't be selling it because there would be no product for you to replace it with. If they'd then released the 4 next spring, it would be worth the same or even less than it is now because the device would be 6 months older. If you have to have the top of the line, you should be thrilled because you are going to get to use the newest tech 6 months early!! Like it or not, your rant says everything about yourself and nothing about Apple.

Uh, devaluing the iPad 3 is exactly what it does. If I would have waited until after the event I would have lost about $150 on the sale of my iPad 3.

The reason a person is selling or what, if anything, they replace it with is totally irrelevant.

You are completely wrong. It doesn't matter if it has been discontinued, there will definitely still be updates for the iPad 3. The iPad 2 still gets iOS updates!

Amazon will still give you $650 for a 64 gig Lte model, or $365 for a 16 gig wifi. There is no way their offers were ever $150 more than that.

What you replace it with has everything to do with it because the vast, vast majority of you wouldn't be replacing it if there was no new model. Let me guess, you went on a big spending spree when your house value was inflated in 2007 as well? It's the same mindset.

The ipad 2 hasn't been discontinued has it? The ipad 2 did NOT get a full ios 6 upgrade. ipad 1 has been discontinued & did not receive ios 6 in any form.

ipad 3 has joined ipad 1 in the discontinued bin, I won't be counting on much of anything in terms of upgrades. All Applecare + obliges them to do is to fix or replace ipad 3 if it breaks, it doesn't force Apple to provide software updates.

aam07 - It was predictable that your well written opinion would elicit personal attacks against you, because a balanced conversation is uncomfortable for some on this forum. Nonetheless, other loyal Apple fans are also beginning to express concerns similar to yours, which combined with other recent missteps may signal trouble ahead. It's easy to ignore complaints when new customers far outnumber old customers, but as other companies have learned, this trend seldom lasts forever. Like you, I enjoy my Apple products, but my satisfaction with their product cycle is starting to fray a little at the edges. Hopefully, Apple will understand where we're coming from.
