Hoping this is fixed with a software update.
It probably will be. There have been a handful of folks on the forums here and also on Reddit that noticed it didn’t happen with 12.0 but did start happening once updated to 12.0.1. So it appears to be a software/firmware issue.

When it’s full it’s green
One time it’s dropped to around 6x% after extensive use so I charged it up using the MagSafe charger. To my surprise, in the next morning the light was still amber and the charging stopped at 80%.

But when I’m using it plugged in it will charge to full.
That’s working as designed.

This article is kinda outdated on the info IMHO.. in the threads that were talking about this problem. We know this =

1. The problem only appears when you're using MagSafe with the 140w charger
2. It only appears if your battery is below 80% (as far as I can remember)
3. It only appears if your laptop is already off and have the lid closed. Then when you plug the MagSafe it'll just cycle over and over and over again.
4. It's only affecting the 16"
5. From few reports, it seems like the bug is introduced on 12.0.1. While people on 12.0 didn't have this problem

Now for the workaround =
1. If your laptop is turned on. Just plug the MagSafe in. When it's charging just fine then turn it off and close the lid.
2. If your laptop is already turned off and the lid is closed. Just plug in the MagSafe, open the lid. It will charge just fine and auto boot the laptop.. When it's on the login screen click shutdown and when it is shutdown it'll cycle like normal and then you can close the lid without any problems

I am facing the same issue, but only if Al Dente was running before shutdown!!!
If you're setting the limit to 80% etc it will trigger it. Since from reports on the threads. It does this on 80% to below. Try doing this again when the battery is at 90% it shouldn't have this bug now

I actually forgot since i think they were a couple of threads about this issue. But yeh i summed out everything the threads reported on the post before my post to you.

I can confirm it myself that on 75% battery (I'm on 12.1 beta 1) when I turn it off and have the lid closed. It does the bug with the 140w charger. Now when I charge it then turn it off like my workaround on my post above. It charges just fine with the lid closed. 140w MagSafe with 75% of battery.

I figured people just kept them on all the time and used the sleep mode. It charges fine in that mode with the lid closed.

Flashing amber? Sounds like my Honda Accord. No Honda wireless charger works with any MagSafe iPhone model. There are TSBs on it, no fix.

As for the Mac owners, hopefully it’s a software fix. Otherwise, potential repair program.

It’s a software bug. I’m running 12.0 and don’t have this problem. But people who update the OS have the problem. It’s related to fast charging. If you use a lower wattage charger than the 140 watt one that comes with the 16-inch MBP, you won’t experience fast charging — or this bug.

The iPhone has to be on to charge. Why not MacBook too?

-kind of sort of joking.

I can report that I have had a similar incident with my M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro. I thought I was "losing it" and resorted to charging it VIA a USB-C cable. I assumed it was because of my USB-C extension cable and the 140w but it appears now that this is not the case. It is naughty firmware.... I shouldn't be suprized.

pretty bad when you need a computer to determine if the computer is "plugged in" or not and how fast to charge it. Nice features when they work but when they don't.... chaos ensues!

I had this charging issue for about 3 seconds. Here is how it happened:

- Mac went to 0% battery after 8 hours use.

- I closed the machine and plugged in the MagSafe.

- Orange light blinked for 3 seconds.

- I unplugged and plugged back.

- Machine started to charge normally.
