Articles like this feel very much like clickbait.

"An unspecified number of people might or might not have experienced an issue with a particular Apple product. This unspecified number might or might not be enough for Apple to take notice. This is assuming the issue exists in the first place as the only evidence mentioned in the article is anecdotal"
Yes. And then there are the predictable comments to the article, along the lines of:

"I'm not experiencing this issue, so it must not be widespread, and this is just anecdotal evidence since it's not happening to me."

I have been having these issues with my 16" Max. I have had this machine for about a week, initially I didn't think much of it. However, after reading all these comments, I decided to contact Apple Support. Support were unable to provide any resolution to fix it via a software fix. I had two options a) get it sent to Apple for Repair b) get a replacement. Obviously as the machine is new, I opted for the second route. The Mac came with 12.0.1 as default to the best of my memory. The new machine will be here in 6 weeks so hoping this is just a one off issue and not something broader.

Have mine coming in a few days.... :(

Hope I don't have this issue. Kills the excitement..

Who turns their MacBook off?
All the time.
The things are so thin that having them in a backpack while they’re asleep means that a small flex of the lid as you perhaps pick it up to put on your back means it turns on and cooks itself to a flat battery.
Just what you need on a remote site right?

Is it really that Apple hardware has all these problems, or is it due to a spotlight effect?

I don't know. I'm really wondering. I don't hear about these issues with Microsoft branded devices or Dell branded devices. Screen issues, keyboard issues, one more "something-gate". It seems like it's always something going on with the newest hardware.

That said, I've had far better luck with my iOS devices than with laptops. The last 2 MBP's I got had issues that while not deal breakers, were every disappointing for a product carrying a premium price tag. One requiring an expensive fix that was not covered but was indeed a defect (the Apple store manager was a complete ass about me not buying Applecare). My iPad Pro and iPhones of recent purchase (X, Xr, 12P and 13 PM, iPad Pro late 2018) have been excellent devices that have performed better than expected.

I'll be hanging on to my current 2018 MBP for a while. I despise the keyboard, but it always seems like the latest Apple laptop has issues. I don't hear these issues with other branded laptops.

And I'm not saying this to knock the fruit company. I like the products, and they are esthetically pleasing. The OS is clearly superior, and it's an excellent product.

But is it good enough to warrant the higher price? A lot of people will be asking themselves this question when they make purchases.

For the record, my next laptop will probably be an Apple silicon MBP but that is probably another year or two away for me.

If the replacement comes with 12.0.1, it will still have the issue. Replacing the hardware doesn’t solve it. Apple should know this by now.

And YouTube HDR!!!
YouTube HDR works just fine on my MacBook Pro 16”. It’s actually sort of neat how HDR activates only where the video is on the screen. It’s really obvious with how bright the highlights get. It’s my iPad Pro that doesn’t seem to play YouTube in HDR in safari.

Just chiming in that I've seen this same issue with my new MacBook Pro 16. I tried to charge it with the lid closed and got the flashing orange light and repeated charging sound. I opened it, plugged it in and then it charged just fine.

Thought this is a common issue to all, had mine since day 1…just doing the workaround now by plugging magsafe while lid is open then wait for restart and shutdown until the orange led blink, now it is safe to close the lid ?

It’s a software bug. I’m running 12.0 and don’t have this problem. But people who update the OS have the problem. It’s related to fast charging. If you use a lower wattage charger than the 140 watt one that comes with the 16-inch MBP, you won’t experience fast charging — or this bug.
Good that it’s a bug and not a hardware issue.

My16" M1 Pro has this issue after updating to 12.0.1
--Battery below 80%
--Power off
--Close Cover
--Plug in MagSafe
--Flashing amber light and charging 'chime' every 5 sec

I have the same issue reported on my 2016 16" M1 Pro (base model except for 1TB SSD upgrade). Power off, close lid, plug in MagSafe and it cycles with the amber light and makes the charging cord plugged in sound. System is running 12.0.1 firmware 7429.41.5. If not for reading this article I likely would have never known about this issue. I would wager this is more widespread than people think because you would be hard pressed to figure this out in normal usage (I really can't think of a reason to ever turn this machine off). Hopefully they fix it but admittedly the standby battery life is so excellent on this machine I haven't turned it off since getting it and therefore have yet to notice.

But this is still easily still the best MacBook I have purchased in since my 2008 15 MBP (coming from an old iBook G4), if its software they'll fix it easily if its hardware they usually make good on these things, but only after it gets press. This seems like a legit problem that they need to look into.

I have the issue on my 16" model. I only noticed AFTER I read this article. Based on the circumstantial evidence so far it's a software bug, not a hardware issue. I'm not going to return it and then have the same issue again with a "new one". I don't really charge the laptop when I'm not using it anyway. So it's not a big deal for me, at least not yet. I'm sure apple will release a firmware update of some kind soon.

I just tried and am able to reproduce this error on my 16” Max! The light flashes and the power connected tone repeats itself again and again. Funny - I’ve never ran into this before because I never power the thing off…

I have a new MacBook Pro 16, basic with 1TB SSD, and I am seeing a different but odd behavior.

1) Nearly fully charged laptop.
2) Disconnect MagSafe. (this also can be done after step 3)
3) Shut Down.
4) Reconnect Magsafe.
5) Flash amber once, and poof the laptop auto boots.

Here is a video of the behavior.

Apple devices are obviously learning behaviour from each other. My wired CarPlay has been doing the repeated 5 sec chime with my iPhone for months now!

Some 16-inch MacBook Pro owners appear to have identified a shared issue suggesting the MagSafe 3 connector sometimes fails to deliver the expected charge when their Mac is turned off and the lid is closed.

16-inch-magsafe-3.jpg

As outlined on Reddit, some 16-inch MacBook Pro Models, when powered off, are failing to charge if the MagSafe connector is plugged in. Instead of turning green, the MagSafe light flashes amber and fails to deliver power to the Mac battery. Some customers have contacted Apple Support to find a solution, with varying degrees of success. One user, in particular, said that after a lengthy back and forth, Apple Support decided to send them a replacement laptop.
A video shared on Reddit shows that when the MacBook Pro is closed, the light on the MagSafe charger repeatedly flashes amber and is accompanied by the typical macOS charging sound effect. A consistent orange light means the MacBook is being charged, while green shows it's fully charged.

If a MacBook Pro is connected to MagSafe while turned on and it is then turned off, MagSafe 3 continues to charge the Mac as expected. The issue only occurs for some users when attempting to plug in the MagSafe connector when the Mac is already turned off. The flashing amber MagSafe light is an indication that something is not functioning as normal, and an Apple Support page includes steps for users to take to return MagSafe to normal operation. However, the steps don't seem to work in the reported cases where the MacBook Pro is turned off with the lid closed.

Not all 16-inch MacBook Pro owners face the problem, and MacRumors has been unable to reproduce the bug. Regardless, there are enough users facing the problem that Apple may address it in the near future.

I'm seeing the same issue on my 2 week old MacBook Pro 16" - WTF

When it’s full it’s green
One time it’s dropped to around 6x% after extensive use so I charged it up using the MagSafe charger. To my surprise, in the next morning the light was still amber and the charging stopped at 80%.

But when I’m using it plugged in it will charge to full.
Look in System Preferences > Battery > Battery and see if the "Optimize battery charging" is checked. Its purpose is "To reduce battery aging, your Mac learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging at 80% until you need to use it on battery".

Under System Preferences > Battery there is a "Battery Health..." button. Click that and check to see if the "Manage battery longevity" box is checked. Its purpose is "As your battery ages, peak capacity is reduced to extend battery lifespan."

Personally, both boxes are checked on my Mac which is the default. I have not edited those, but it seems unchecking those boxes will disable some of the software battery management.
