I had this issue after about a week. It was annoying.... however the APMs really struggled with devices switching between my iPhone and MacBook M1. The worst part was, as I was listening on my iPhone it would switch to an iPad upstairs my son was using - highly stupid! This got more common and then eventually they stopped connecting properly and bricked. Called apple, they couldn’t fix and so returned - replacement pair not due til March! Hoping that the wait my lead to these issues being ironed out.

My first gen Airpods standard are still running fine. I can’t use them for more than 20 minutes though but that is because my ears start hurting. This is why I need the over ear headphones and why I got the Max variant.
I have AirPods 2, but I regret buying it because if I waited a few more months, I could've gotten the AirPods Pro with ANC for not that much more. ANC is a game changer to me. I also have Sony XM3. How do you like your Max? I will probably get the Max 2 or something.

A bit of devil’s advocating regarding deep sleep: it says that it turns off Find My services and other things. So maybe it takes some more time to restart or get out of that sleep?
Whenever I use them I can just grab and wear them over, it instantly connects to the device it was previously connected to, play some sounds, can pop them off (this will stop the active sound being listened to whether it was Music or a video from YouTube), etc several times a day... so maybe that’s why they settled on whatever amount of time for deep sleeping and other low energy modes?

It explicitly says that it does that if “left in place”, so moving them around would reset that time.

in the voice of Hades from Disney’s Hercules “I know I know!”

I’m saying the long 75min deep sleep is more likely to disrupt someone picking them up and a lagged re-connection vs someone putting them down for 10-15mins then picking them up in that time frame. AND the dumb bra sleeve dependence for it - versus using the internal sensors to do what it should be doing for Deep Sleep.

That’s all I’m talking about.

if I was traveling for a week again and using it constantly... I would charge it as necessary like I do all my devices. But okay let’s say you’re right, and instead of 2 % it amounts to 4 %. Big whoop. I use mine off and on all day and battery life has never been the issue. but hey that’s just real use experience talking, by all means keep speculating.

yeah you would ‘charge it as necessary’ ... when not needing to be charged then it’s not necessary! That’s the point of Deep Sleep in a battery powered device.

4% for each use case being wasted in a day, week adds up significantly, like compound interest.

Shrugs. If you want a headset to stick in a drawer and forget about for a month.. that's not this. They went a different way in design, which is to say they made it as easy to use as they could. Pick it up. Put it on. It connects. boom. Since I use my headset every day it's no big deal to charge it once a week.

So you've had them long enough to go past the return policy and you just noticed the fast battery drain, especially after you say that you charged it the night before but it nearly completely drained over night?

How is this logical? Because what you're stating is issues can't be worked out. Also it's funny how you're stretching the price by including the tax. Apple doesn't create the tax. About the price if you think "$600" is a lot of money for a pair of quality headphones then you've never shopped around. The B&O headphones are upwards of $800 (before tax 🙄) and there are other headphones like the Grado that are priced at $1500-$2000 for studio headphones. Both the B&O and Grado have had their share of problems.
Goodness, didn't mean to get your panties in a knot. I'm not blaming Apple for the tax, it's just a reality of how much money goes out of your wallet when buying these. If you don't like me rounding up to $600 w/ tax, fine, $550. Happy? Such a good deal when you compare to B&O I know. Yay.

Yes, I used them for a month before I experienced the battery drain. Is that hard to believe? Well, sorry, it's the experience I had. Hopefully won't be yours.

  1. I’d like to see a firmware update that lets you enable low power mode (or off) by holding down both buttons for a few seconds. These headphones will be used primary at home/work, so Find My is not that important. Find My built into the AirPods case would be way more helpful. Battery seems fine but I think knowing they are always on makes me charge them more than my QC35.
  2. I’ve found condensation happens a lot and they feel very warm on my ears. Happens any time of the day in typical 18-20C temperature. A statement from Apple explaining if this is normal or not would be helpful. This is the one thing that could push me to return them.
  3. The case and lightning connector feel like last minute decisions, rather than anything well thought out. That sound when both sides clack together as you pull them from the bra/case  I’ve backed the Max Stand on Kickstarter which is a stand with magnetic charger.
  4. Give us Spatial audio support (without head movement) for any 5.1 source.

Woah, now I have too pledged for the Max Stand on Kickstarter, thanks for the heads up.
Still some ways to go both in pledge amount and days left, but I like it, hope it goes through.

Apple in December introduced the AirPods Max, its over-ear Apple-branded headphones that join the AirPods and AirPods Pro. Since launch, a growing number of MacRumors readers who purchased the AirPods Max have been complaining of battery drain that seems excessive.

Complaints range from high battery drain while the headphones are in use to significant battery loss when the headphones are meant to be idle. MacRumors reader VL_424 explains:Many of the complaints have suggested that the AirPods Max are not properly going into a low power mode, and with no power button, there's no way to force them to conserve battery. When the AirPods Max first launched, there was significant confusion over how low power modes worked when the AirPods Max are in and out of the Smart Case that's included with the headphones.

Apple in a support document clarified that the AirPods Max are designed to enter into a "low power mode" after five minutes of being left stationary (not placed in a case). If untouched, the AirPods Max are meant to stay in low power mode for three days, after which the headphones go into an "ultralow" power state that cuts off Bluetooth and Find My.

When placed into the Smart Case, AirPods Max are designed to go into low power mode immediately rather than waiting for five minutes, and after 18 hours, go into the aforementioned ultralow power state.

Given Apple's description, battery drain should be minimized when the AirPods Max are not in use both in and out of the case, but there may be an issue with low power mode given the battery problems that some users are experiencing.

Many MacRumors readers are seeing high levels of battery drain overnight, sometimes in double digit percentages, but most are seeing approximately 10 to 12 percent battery drain per day when the headphones are not in use. There have also been reports from some users who saw their headphones drain completely over the course of the day. From MacRumors reader DaSal:Some users believe that the issue may be related to the AirPods Max not disconnecting from devices when placed in the case or when entering low power mode. From MacRumors reader Broken Hope:With no power off option it seems that the AirPods Max are going to drain somewhat overnight even in low power mode, but given the number of reports about excessive battery drain, it seems that there could be a software bug that Apple will need to address in the future.

Like AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple is able to push over-the-air firmware updates for AirPods Max, but to date, there have been no new firmware releases.

I have solution to this problem. Even I was facing the problem with battery drain over night. But, now it is sloved..

Solution:
Before placing headphone inside case put that wight colour earcup protection provided in box, before going to bad, check your battery percentage in the morning. Not a single percent drain..

Anyone to confirm this? I tossed it, so cannot check. I guess it's more a coincidence.

Mine weren't having any battery drain issues—until I got a stand. Any reason to think that might be why they're suddenly draining 60% or more during 12 hours of standby?

Or maybe it's something with the auto-switching—it's never worked properly for me. So I will manually switch over to my iPhones, and it will switch back from Max to iPhone output several times, usually right as or right after I'm placing a call.

It's definitely the auto-switching. I have several devices here and I guess it just gets stuck with one of them and does not shut off. Hopefully there will be a firmware-update soon.

Thanks! Did disabling the auto-switching help? Or do you still need to make sure it's disconnected?

It could be that your stand is triggering head detection.

Neither. The auto-switching was one of the reasons I use the Apple Airpods (Pro & Max) most... Waiting for an update.

A stand could trick them into detecting movement. They go into low power when left stationary for 5 minutes. Stationary, not just on your head. A stand could have a slight wobble from vibrations when walking past, banging doors, moving items on the same surface as the stand, etc. I noticed my Apple Watch wake on its charger when I walk past. A firmware update could lower the sensitivity.

But if this is the cause, it means using a third party case (without magnets) and walking with them would prevent low power mode.

Maybe—but they'd have to be very sensitive. I charged them to 100% last night, unplugged them, made sure they weren't connected to any device—and they were down to 84% less than 7 hours later, in an empty room with no vibration, etc.

I was wondering if having them upright out of their case was the issue. When I was laying them on desk I never noticed any battery drain when not using them...
