Power Button is absolutely not required. Apple is right to get rid of them.

This is why you don't see a power button in any products other than... Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, iMac, Mac Pro, iPad Air, iPad Mini, iPad Pro, Apple watch...

END OF DISCUSSION!!!

Edit: Also iPhone Mini, Iphone Max, iPhone Pro.... and other iphones!!! but that is IT!!!!

I don't think Apple wants a on/off button, nor people would need one if the AirPods max works as they were expected to do.
As apple has stated several times for their products: they want simplicity, they want to work magically!

From their perspective , a on/off button is only adding one more steep to the funnel of the using experience, complicating it. You, depending off a button to save battery.....what if YOU forgot to turn the button off and you loose all the battery. HUMANS forget things, tech doesn't.
Apple wanted to address this issue by eliminating the button and make the headphones smart enough to turn on/off by themselves, making the user experience as simple as just putting on and off the headphone from your head, just as the other AirPods. Magical.

Sadly this product is buggy, but im sure the intention of apple is achieve the best user experience, as simple as possible.

My TV can auto power off after a set time but I still choose to switch off manually 95% of the time, to save electricity and because I'm in control of my technology = I know it's off and not just showing a black screen for example.

The APM can still switch off/on automatically for those who cannot be bothered to interact with a power button, or simply forget. But I bet for most, an option to power off manually would be welcomed - then you know there off, especially for longer-term storage. Why not have options? It doesn't need to be one or the other.

Apples version of simplicity is to make things technically more difficult in an effort to make things feel "magical", resulting in a worse user experience. Then you have to wait for software fixes or gen 2. Apple and its technology knows better than you and years of learned experience. Can you imagine the car they might make - you can't just change the tire as you need a software update first to tell the car you're changing the tire, and it only works on wifi. If this isn't done the car won't start........

My Beats Studio3 battery, when switched off manually, last for months when sat in a draw.

All these shenanigans can be solved if only it has power switch, or action. Let users decide whether they want to do power management, or just be lazy and let APM does its smart automations. Should be doable for a pair of $550 headphones, shouldn't it?

This utterly confusing power management and overnight battery drain was the main reason why I returned the AirPods Max early January. Loved the audio quality and ANC though.

By that logic iPhones or iPads shouldn't have power button, do they? But they do. Not exactly a direct button, but they have power action that works reliably. I never feel that iPhone and iPad feel less magical just because it can be turned on or off manually, even if I only need it a few times during its lifetime.

I’ve had mine for a week and haven’t even opened or looked at the man bra, what does it do anyway?

I actually have this problem with my standard AirPods - the right one often drains when left in the case (and shows up in the batteries widget on my devices as if it's not in the case).

But putting them in a case is actually more effort than flipping a power switch

Would it really be that intimidating to consumers if Apple had a power button on these things? Seems like all kinds of problems because of that one omission
I laughed at this suggestion as I mentioned it a month or so back and got a bit of crap about the same opinion. A simple on/off button would be fine, but no Apple needed to be 'smart' and created a crap storage solution to match.

I've experienced this a few times which has been incredibly frustrating but I've found rebooting them somehow fixes the issue. It may take 1 or 2 goes at it but since I've rebooted them the battery has been fine and has lasted for ages.
Though Apples instructions on rebooting them aren't entirely accurate. It says to hold both the crown and noise cancellation buttons down until the amber light flashes and then should reboot. I never had a light flash but if you try it with the headphones on, when you hear the noise cancellation or transparency mode turn off, then let go and then it should reboot. Hopefully this helps. It definitely needs a software patch though.

I am quite discouraged! I had battery drain problem so I tried a factory reset of my AirPods Max. Seems to work correctly for 3 days. Yesterday evening I put the headphones in the case with 84% battery and this morning I have 1% of charge. This is really bad

I don’t know why Apple didn’t just make a charging case like the other AirPods. Obviously not the same design charging case but one where you put it in and it charges when not in use.

Apple has a unhealthy obsession with making their products thin and minimalistic. If they could they would make iPhones even thinner, without any buttons, or ports.

Returned mine due to a variety of issues including battery drain. Ordered B&O H95 instead to try.
I was considering buying a set once stock became more plentiful, perhaps in spring. Now I am thinking perhaps I will take a pass or wait for the second rev.

Calm down. Nobody sees mine but me and my wife so spare me that nonsense.
Then why did you take offense from what I said? 😂🤣

Also "$700+" is a number you pulled directly out of your ass. The actual price is $550 -- which is a lot but again, read what I wrote above (or don't, I could give a crap).
You also appear to be clueless that people outside USA have to pay $700+ for these water-cooled headphones 🤣😂

Perhaps allowing the crown long press to act as a power button? Yes? No? I know we are all so disgusted and inconvenienced by pressing buttons, like come on get your act together, it's 2021 who needs buttons!?!?!? /s ... but perhaps there is still a need for something that can save/cut power ... you know like a button.

You do realize they have been working on this product for years right? I fail to see how this is considered a rushed product to some people. We have had Macbook Pros have excessive battery drain at times too.
A rushed product is a rushed product regardless if it's in years of development:
Skipping quality checks, not fully testing for months the product internally in various environments vs a lab, or even if rushing the software. doesn't matter.

The issues I've mentioned are valid even if you disagree; a case should not be putting headphones into deep sleep given all the sensors and at this price range. It's actually disappointing Apple chose this route to be honest..

That's why I recommend not to buy first generation products.
My first gen Airpods standard are still running fine. I can’t use them for more than 20 minutes though but that is because my ears start hurting. This is why I need the over ear headphones and why I got the Max variant.
