Bought a $12,000 Mac Pro in 2019 - I wanted a big computer to run my music studio virtual instruments and many plugins…

In retrospect - I won’t do that again… buy smaller computers and update more frequently…

Live and Learn :)

For me - Apple is still too costly and I’ve been a fanboy since 1992.

I got each of my daughters a MacBook Air and they love it - nice machine - nice price…

Money grabs make consumers think if the product is worth it - and IMHO many will opt out - thus creating a larger digital divide :( those that afford can AI and those that don’t - a very bad situation…

Those with AI will be able to work faster, better, and have a step up over those that don’t … but to charge for it seems slimy…

/ rant :)

I’m out… won’t pay for subscriptions.

What a shame…

Apple doesn’t have enough money???
Who said they will have subscriptions for AI?

People really should read the story before making assumptions.

You should have a serious look at Windows machines. Overpriced junk for the most part. Unless you do a custom build they are simply low value. The overpriced part of Apple is only in the upgrading costs of storage. Any comparable Windows machines still get soldered ram and most don’t have ways to even increase that at purchase.

I’m getting a telepathic reading everyone! 👉🏼😌👈🏼 … Even if it’s bundled into Apple One, they’ll just make Apple One more expensive (not like it hasn’t been already lol)

I absolutely love my gaming PC but as you pointed out, I built it. Every last part was decided by me, down to the cables coming out of the power supply (custom lengths, double sheathed). It’s a thing of beauty right down to the AIO pump that has a screen to read out temps for my GPU (nvidia) and (i9)CPU. windows catches a lot of unwarranted flak mostly on its past reputation but it’s been rock solid for me. Not sure what you mean about the soldered ram though… and this machine is a monster with AI tasks. And it’s got a sleek minimal aesthetic because I have a thing for cable management

I’m surprised people are surprised by

shareholders say no. And the growth at any cost goblin rears its ugly head. It’s a large part of what’s wrong with Apple today (and Cook is the mascot of that illness)
Who cares about shareholders, what about customer experience?

Totally agree in everything you’ve said.

Soldered RAM for laptops. More and more common. I just bought a w11 laptop only for legacy apps. HP x360 2 in 1. Gets amazing reviews but compared to my M1 MacBook Air, it feels like junk at every turn.

AAPL may choose to implement such things, but AAPL does not "have to do" so.

AAPL could actually bring Grenada's infrastructure back up to last week's status easier than I could fit the purchase of a medium coffee @DD into my budget 🤷‍♂️

The alternative to the Apple approach of profit and sustainability is the Google graveyard.

I think this is a good move from Apple and expected. It's actually a good way of regulating AI, by a round-about means. All of the server resources needed by AI, and all of the development have to be paid for somewhere, and make a profit, or commercially, it's a loss. So charge for it by all means. Then, if the majority of people won't pay for it, it won't be viable, and they will limit future development. Or it will be a huge success and go the other way....
Charge for it by all means yes. But I’m thinking more like $2.99 a month extra for the AI enhanced Siri. There’s no way I would be paying $20 a month and don’t give Apple the idea that we will.

They will probably roll it into Apple One. I think my max over the next 10 years would be about 50 bucks a month for everything. Thankfully I actively use about 95% of the services provided with Apple One.

I’m exactly the same.

That’s a current functionality. They aren’t going to charge to use basic Siri functionality. I’m sure on newer devices those commands don’t even have to leave the device. So no, no matter what, those simple commands will not be put behind a subscription.

You intrigued me to look further into this, and actually it seems yes Home Kit works without the internet. I'll need to investigate further but that may make me switch as with my Alexa Show if their is not internet it doesn't do anything.

Not happy to hear about another subscription. But very possible that Apple could do it in the future.

“Paid for” subscription has to offer value I would often use
Have to see what’s what when iOS 18 is released

The distinction (using a very basic example) with HomeKit is if you ask Siri to turn on the living room lamp it will do so without leaving HomeKit. If you ask Siri to turn on the living room lamp at sunset, it will send it to the cloud to work that one out. And my understanding is that this will improve moving forward and there will be less requirements to leave the device.

I don’t want Google or Amazon going through my email or messages to find out what time Aunt Joan will be arriving at the airport. Privacy is key to Apple Intelligence. Your Data is key for Amazon & Google Intelligence

I don't do subscriptions for this kinda stuff, so that's me out.
Theres no way Apple is going to charge for this when the competition is free. They are way behind and if they charge people would just use ChatGPT instead.

What Apple and many other hardware/software companies are/have been doing over the many years is something that the housing market has been doing for decades which is to find ways to cream money out of house owners. You buy a property and find it's a leasehold, in the contract you find you not only have to pay a monthly fee for ground rent but also a monthly fee for management services. This has been slowly happening to software. Once you were able to purchase software outright and get yearly updates but now software companies have changed their models and instead of being able to purchase the software outright they now make it subscription based.

Apple going subscription shows that they are getting their customers to pay for their failures. It is not the users fault that Apple is not able to find ways to innovate it's hardware so instead of finding ways to innovate their hardware they are basically saying 'sod it, let's get our users to pay for our shortfall in cash due to lack of hardware changes/improvements'.

Apple will never take a hit on it's profits, they will always find a way to make it's users pay and obviously they see software subscription as the way to do it.

Oh and I forgot to mention, the tie in with Google AI. Do Apple users honestly think their personal data, privacy and security is going to be safe when dealing with a company that is known to harvest peoples personal data and sell it on to 3rd parties.

I would still keep my Echo Show as a bedside alarm clock as it works well for that. But I've been thinking of offline home automation and really do not want to go down the Home Assistant route! That is one mine field I'll avoid.. but if Home Kit does it then that's a better solution for me. I have no idea how it works or how to set it up so will investigate further.
I need some new smart plugs so shall hold off and see if Home Kit and Siri works first.
