Haha, they want me to pay for a < *EDIT* nearly > useless / gimmicky service that I didn't want in the first place?

The only single useful AI feature I saw in WWDC was editing written emails for more concise or formal sentences.

Well of course.

Tim Cook 101.

Services are the great growth area for Apple Inc. …

Sell people the hardware and then rack up the monthly subscriptions to make it useful.
Not so much Tim Cook. ChatGPT is already $US20 per month, why shouldn’t Apple get involved?

The hardware will work the same with or without it. The information is the value.

This is great news for investors 👍😀

I'm an investor/shareholder. I'd rather they didn't.

I wasn't planning on using AI anyway, so this doesn't change much for me.

ChatGPT has an extensive free tier.

Talks about not using Meta because of privacy but then in talks with CHINESE companies. The irony.
it's about content being returned, not privacy.

an anon query to even a Chinese server is still private.

just they might get the same wide ranging answers the rest of the world get.

Apple is a business. Businesses exist to make profits.

That's reality. No distortion field required.

I think this is a good move from Apple and expected. It's actually a good way of regulating AI, by a round-about means. All of the server resources needed by AI, and all of the development have to be paid for somewhere, and make a profit, or commercially, it's a loss. So charge for it by all means. Then, if the majority of people won't pay for it, it won't be viable, and they will limit future development. Or it will be a huge success and go the other way....

If true I was waiting for this to come up lol. After all the comments at Amazon… but I bet everyone is perfectly fine with Apple charging for AI right?.
If Apple tries to charge for its AI then it should make it work on a lot more devices, but they won’t.

Think I’ll stick with Alexa, maybe.

I've been dabbling with smart home (lights/music) in recent months and found Alexa to be pretty solid for my use cases. But I'm also now playing with HomeKit, which has been impressive so far at my place ... apart from 2 lights currently on HomeBridge on my Mac Studio I'm prepared to go either way depending on what these companies do. Whoever's service costs less and/or sucks less and meets my interests/needs will be who I go with ultimately.

In the world of IoT, ecosystems, subscriptiosn, and vendor-lock-in risks, designing for resiliency is absolutely critical.

You listed a ‘useful’ feature for a service you called ‘useless’ 😂😂 Oh dear. The irony is that AI would likely have picked up the grammatical blunder in your anti-AI rant post 😂

Wasn't the Satellite feature also supposed to be paid after a year or so? What happened to that.
They hinted at it in the WWDC keynote. It sounds like they are working on getting enough supported phones in the wild. It sounds like the first phones will be capped at 3 free years and then the subscription will kick in. At that point I would expect one free year for those that haven’t signed up yet.

Currently, Apple is communicating two years of free emergency coverage.

Why is everyone acting irritated? These things take a lot of processing power and cloud storage, and that costs money. Apple is here to make as much profit as possible, they aren’t giving things away for free.

You only get 5gb of iCloud free to incentivize you to buy more.
Indeed… it is widely rumored Steve Jobs is turning heaven a profit

I'd guess $16-$26 a month for the AI stuff. ChatGPT charges $20 for the advanced version of its service. I fully expect Apple Intelligence to become the industry leader and it won't be cheap to run.
Apple is very behind in this field, it is very hard to believe it’d become industry leader anytime soon, if ever.
