But they'll happily take a percentage of sales from the millions of 'free' apps on their app store that do gather your data and sell it on. Need to remember that when Apple is virtue signalling over privacy.
I agree. In an ideal world they would require the same type of privacy from 3rd party apps.
But people seem to like "free" or almost free without thinking of how things appear to be "free".

I guess its been like that for ages, software and software updates should always be free in some peoples minds while its ok to pay for hardware.

Samsung also said their AI features will require paid sub as well. the thing is, both Samsung and Apple's AI stuff are mostly just useless crap at the moment.
I’ve not used Apples AI yet. I don’t believe it’s released.? I think it’s hilarious and sad at the same time when people provide junk reviews on something that isn’t yet available.

Feeling grateful that I know how to write an email, draw a picture and edit a photo. Seems it’s gonna save me money.

Seriously though, so far there is no truly compelling consumer use case for AI. Nothing but gimmicks and hype, maybe a few marginal gains. Certainly nothing worth paying extra for.

Apple eventually plans to turn some of its artificial intelligence features into paid services, similar to iCloud+ subscriptions, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said that while Apple Intelligence will be free to start, Apple's long-term plan is to launch something like "Apple Intelligence+," with extra features that users pay monthly fees to access.

Making its own AI features another services revenue stream should allow Apple to compensate for the slowing pace of hardware upgrades and make the company less reliant on hardware tweaks to drive its business, argues Gurman.

Apple is also expected to receive a cut of revenue whenever a user signs up to features offered by its AI partners, such as ChatGPT provided by OpenAI. Gurman says he expects Apple to agree a deal with Google and Anthropic to offer their AI services through its devices, with the former expected to be announced when Apple Intelligence launches in the fall as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple has turned down an AI partnership with Facebook parent company Meta due to privacy concerns. Meanwhile, Apple is said to be seeking partnerships for the Chinese market, where ChatGPT and other similar AI services are not available.

Well of course.

Tim Cook 101.

Services are the great growth area for Apple Inc. …

Sell people the hardware and then rack up the monthly subscriptions to make it useful.
That depends. We have been using Music, Cloud+, TV, Arcade for years without ever paying a cent. BestBuy, Target, Walmart+ or even Apple give away so many free codes that we can't even consume all on 3 accounts.

That's hilarious. There's nothing worth using for free much less pay for with this nonsense so far.

Total misread of the product.

Everything *already* announced is free. Period.

All these comments saying they won't use it because of the price… Why?
Because you're concerned it will be a good feature/service but then you'll feel obliged to pay for it to retain access?
It's rare to see Apple offer, as you say, a "good" service. Especially in a field where they've invested next to little, have little experience, and have just started.

Maybe you didn't watched WWDC, imagine how bad it will perform when it's boring even in presentation where they tend to overhype.
I could always use ChatGPT for free by just going to their website for years.

Same with Alexa. AI with large token inputs (most likely to leave the iPhone for server processing) is pretty resource intensive WRT server cycles. I am happy that they will be charging for it rather than building the overhead costs into the purchase price. If everyone with a phone is submitting a complex AI query every 5 minutes or so... hard to imagine the infrastructure that's going to be needed. United States is reviving many coal power plants simply to meet current electicity demands with data centers leading the charge. AI demands plus BEV demands are going to be hard to meet.

Nah… Everything that runs on device is free, and everything that uses cloud will cost money.

Well that will be anything relating to Home Kit then. Because I'm pretty sure local devices don't run turning your lights on and off when you ask Siri.

But this report – which it's worth noting is a rumour, not a statement from Apple – suggests any charges will come later instead of immediately. Presumably this is in recognition that the service will be developed over time to offer more (in terms of robustness or ability) and there will be a point where it graduates to being something Apple can monetise directly (in a similar way to how iCloud transitioned from totally free to having an optional paid-for upgrade).

If people thought bitcoin mining was a terrible use of enormous amounts of electricity — we ain’t seen nothing yet. If Artificial Intelligence takes off, it will require countless gigantic data centers to run it world wide - all using enormous amounts of electricity too.

is that why SiriAI will eventually be a subscription?

Ah. So you are basing your entire experience of Apples AI on their keynote. Noted. You don’t value privacy and Apples access to ChatGPT doesn’t give you access to ChatGPT. Got it. It’s too early for me to form an educated opinion on its ability when it isn’t even in public Beta yet. Coming Soon.

By 'years' I presume you mean 19 months.
Probably have seeing they state they also have experience in actually using Apple Intelligence. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Personally, I don’t believe it, but they seem pretty sure…

According to Gurman
"Apple eventually plans to turn some of its artificial intelligence features into paid services"

It is super vague and provides no information. I would surmise it could mean some kind of location based already paid service. It still fits. Gurman is stating the bleeding obvious,
