IF a “premium” tier of Apple Intelligence eventually comes down the line, it is going to be *different* than everything that was shown at WWDC. Apple explicitly stated this was all free of charge (ignore cost of entry by purchasing Apple device).

Macrumors, somehow, has turned this into “the stuff we saw is going to cost money through a subscription”. That is plainly not true.

Again I’ll circle back to reading comprehension.

Yeah I don't disagree, I think Apple would have a difficult time charging for what they showed off at WWDC. That's why I'm a bit confused because Gurman is saying, at least according to MR: "Apple's long-term plan is to launch something like "Apple Intelligence+," with extra features that users pay monthly fees to access." That would imply that "Apple Intelligence+, or whatever premium name/service it ends up being in the future, is what was being discussed as a paid subscription, and not anything announced At WWDC. I skimmed through the comments and didn't see many, if any, that thought Apple would specifically charge for WWDC stuff, most assume it would be some sort of future premium tier.

Edit: You know part of the problem is MacRumors clickbaity title, "Some" AI features being charged is leading readers to think they are talking about the WWDC announcements, but in the article it's clarified that these are future and most likely premium features. The title should be less sensationalistic and maybe read with the words future and premium tier. But I'll bet that a large proportion of MR readers don't even read the article and just go off and pontificate based on the article title.

I want one thing and one thing only; at the moment, the AI offerings seem lacklustre and of no use to me, save for photo editing and image generation via words/text prompts.

Want - on device image generation with no, none, zilch, nada image accessibility checks. I would pay for this. Essentially, with the use of AI I do not want Apple between me and wars that may/may not be occurring in any given continent not labelled North America.

Don’t even really care about the photo editing bit, b/c I already use a couple of photo editing tools, so my only want/use is there. Am I going to get my wish? Not a chance in heck.

Forces me to say Apple Ai - shrug.

I wonder if they'd spend more time adding features many of us want to existing iPhones/Macs (including different form factors, sizes and default builds) if we "subscribed"?

Not surprised whatsoever, not because it's Apple, but because of how much loss apple would otherwise incur from AI requests from millions upon millions of devices. There's a reason ChatGPT costs money for extended use and extra features - the generative AI compute time is expensive as hell - not just in hardware but in electricity.

I think it was Tristan Harris who said that AI we know actually are just little cats, but the lions and super lions are around the corner. And of course, that would be a privilege, and very expensive.

You have no idea how far behind they might be, or how long they've been working on Apple Intelligence. While your opinion may be definitive, you can't factually state they are very far behind.
Well, hopefully, they've been working on it since Siri and its developers became part of Apple. Hopefully, they've been continuing to push since there was a Neural Processing Unit.

Hopefully, they've been making improvements since the car project was sidelined and some of those developers were moved to fix Siri and make AI usable on Apple products.

Glad they choose this path instead of increasing the price of the product or selling data of their users to 3rd parties to cover the cost of functionality.
What makes u think they won't ALSO increase the price of the product AND sell your data? Apple is greedy and nothing is private.

It’s amusing how many people think there’s a “this” to justify.

Everything shown at WWDC is free. This rumor is based around *potential* additional features that have not even been announced.
If true then fine I can use my tech as I always have with those improvements made possible why the chips in my iPad/iPhone and MacBook and no worry just do not move information services from where I obtain them now by my own intelligent and refined manual searches with apple search on its OS’s

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said that while Apple Intelligence will be free to start, Apple's long-term plan is to launch something like "Apple Intelligence+," with extra features that users pay monthly fees to access.

Making its own AI features another services revenue stream should allow Apple to compensate for the slowing pace of hardware upgrades and make the company less reliant on hardware tweaks to drive its business, argues Gurman.
Still not a substitute for good apps and hardware. It's kinda like flavor enhancement for old food. ;)

It’s the price you pay for ignorance. We didn’t need Apple Intelligence 10 years ago, we don’t need it today.. and we won’t need it tomorrow. Apple Intelligence is for people who are too lazy to use their own brain.
Boom precisely my thinking as well. I am a retired geologist and paleontologist and I use my own refined searches for data that require me to think and keep my brain active and well functioning at 73 plus years. Doing emeritus work now for the University and Geological Survey. So this is good for me. Also as storm spotter for weather bureau I again use my own intelligence and paid subscription weather apps for current data and searches. But There seem to be a growing generation of folks too damn dependent on tech and too lazy to do their brain and body to do most of the work. Sigh

Apple eventually plans to turn some of its artificial intelligence features into paid services, similar to iCloud+ subscriptions, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Apple-Intelligence-General-Feature.jpg

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said that while Apple Intelligence will be free to start, Apple's long-term plan is to launch something like "Apple Intelligence+," with extra features that users pay monthly fees to access.

Making its own AI features another services revenue stream should allow Apple to compensate for the slowing pace of hardware upgrades and make the company less reliant on hardware tweaks to drive its business, argues Gurman.

Apple is also expected to receive a cut of revenue whenever a user signs up to features offered by its AI partners, such as ChatGPT provided by OpenAI. Gurman says he expects Apple to agree a deal with Google and Anthropic to offer their AI services through its devices, with the former expected to be announced when Apple Intelligence launches in the fall as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple has turned down an AI partnership with Facebook parent company Meta due to privacy concerns. Meanwhile, Apple is said to be seeking partnerships for the Chinese market, where ChatGPT and other similar AI services are not available.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha

Nope

It's worked like a charm for over a decade and Ai is the single most obvious path to increasing subscription revenue
Of course, if it’s a paid service, and it hallucinates in a way that causes harm, the lawsuit will likely be even more expensive.

Not sure the risk/reward balance is quite right right now?

Apple eventually plans to turn some of its artificial intelligence features into paid services...
In order to get users to pay a subscription, it will have to be better than the others. Can Apple do that? I doubt it. Jumping to the top of the crowd means Apple has to hire and retain the best AI researchers. These people REALLY like to publish. They are academics whose reputations depend on being authors of cited papers.

Yes, you can hire engineers (like me) who have read and studied some of those papers but you are not in the front if you are hiring engineers who are studying the work of others. You want those "others".

That said, I think Apple does a good job with their music service. The user interface is horrible but the content and discovery algorithm is good. But Apple did this by hiring some industry professionals. Can they do the same with AI?

Is the negative space unevenness where the line cuts through on this god forsaken logo?? it seems to follow no rules at all. Complete madness. Design chaos.

I’m calling it, Apple will eventually expand Apple Intelligence to older iPhones by subscription and will be cloud based. There’s no way they’ll limit it to the latest Pro phones with less than 5% of the user base, they’ll have to make it available on more iPhones to possibly make more subscription revenue.

If iPhone 16 has the same form factor as the iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12 and you’ll have pay a subscription for using ai, it will be milking the customers to the ultra pro max. You’ll only see this coming from Apple and dino Tim Cook.

Time for a new wind at the helm of Apple. Out with the milking, in with the new!
