I'm out of practice and haven't worn a watch in 10-12 years and I actually like the sports band. Only problem I see is my choice in color. I couldn't decide between white or black ended up with white and now just from the short time that I have been using a pencil I have marks on the band.

Yeah, I expect the sport band to wear as well (or, more accurately, as poorly) as the light colored silicone iPhone cases.

I've enjoyed the device so far. I was playing with and had a "now what" moment before I remembered I bought a watch and that is what was next.

At the moment, I am very glad I have one but kind of regret spending as much as I did for the 42mm SS milanese loop. I feel like I would have been just has happy with a Sport edition now that I've been charged.

  • Best advice from Joanna Stern at the WSJ - Don't sync up all your apps at setup. Pick and choose the ones you want selectively.
  • If you follow step 1, setup is a breeze.
  • I set haptic at 50%. It's fairly unobstrusive.
  • I'm amazed at how quickly this felt "natural' to me. With the classic band, it feels like the watch I wore before, only a bit nicer (the steel watch is heavier)
  • The watch feature works better than I expected, though if I'm at my desk and want to "glance," I usually need to press the crown (somewhat 1970s-esque).
  • I have no issues fitting this under a sleeve. I don't know what Hodinkee was talking about.
  • I won't use apps much from what I can tell. This will mostly be a notification device. I'm selective about what I installed.
  • Once I get used to charging this daily, it should become second nature.
  • The classic band makes it look very inconspicuous.

The initial battery life is better than I expected. I left my place 3 hours ago to walk back to my office. The Watch was at 90%. After the walk, playing around with the settings, checking notifications, etc. it's still at 83%.

I'll see how it as after a full day tomorrow.

In the Music App on the Watch, if you force touch it lets you switch between the Watch and your Phone as the source of music playback, you can also choose bluetooth or Airplay speakers/headphones that are paired with your iPhone via the AirPlay option in force touch.

Thanks! This was also something I hadn't figured out.

Wow, I didn't expect to get many responses to my OP, figured there would be a flood of similar posts and mine would get buried.

I know I gave a negative impression of the watch, but it was definitely a lot of "zero hour annoyances". I'm still learning stuff and poking around.

More stuff:

The Deliveries app seems to work decently, as does Appigo ToDo. Both have reasonably functional Glance views.

Ditto OpenTable.

The Hue app crashed a few times at first, and it doesn't have a Glance version, but I guess there's no real point (now that I understand glances a bit better). If using the Hue app, keep in mind it seems to only pull the scenes you have enabled in your iPhone/iOS Notification Center widgets. So no way to turn all lights off unless you define that as a NC widget.

Heart monitor seems to do a good job, especially as I am somewhat high strung, and it amusingly reflects my heart-racing moments.

Received the first nag to stand up while driving.

Thought my taptic motor was busted at first, but somehow it had been turned off in the settings (the slider).

Still playing with it, and still waiting on any news of the BF's watch in my sig. (No news.)

Have got the 42 Space Gray Sport

LOVE the packaging.
It looks fantastic.
Strap is very comfortable..and so buttery soft.
Screen is great.
Battery life is better than expected.

Some apps are slow.
I thought Siri would talk back
The Haptic Engine isn't as strong as I thought.
More faces in the App Store is essential.

But overall, very pleased. Well done :apple:

Not sure if you know you could adjust it.

Thanks, yeh I have it on full..but I don't think it is strong enough to wake you up in the morning as Johnny Ives implied.

For notifications, it's just right tho.

Cool. I tested at the store and I felt it's strong enough for me. Just me though.

There's no way it would work as an alarm clock for me, even if it went on full strength for an hour.

Sport watch seemed impossible to put on at first. The trick is -- stick the metal piece into a hole first, and then push the other part in.

--Why on earth is the packaging so heavy?

Why is the sky blue?

--I like the ability to customize the watch face, but took me a bit to figure out how.

RTFM. Lolz

--Lots of things don't work quite like I expect them to. Learning curve is a little steeper than I would have expected (considering I have many years of Apple devices under my belt and I'm technically quite clued). And you're definitely nailed to the phone for the first hour or so.

RTFM again. lolz!

--Force touch is finicky. The Sport strap is finicky. Lots of things are finicky.

Yeah, everything pisses me off in this world too man.

--First two third-party apps I installed are basically non-functional (Amazon, and "Joy", a third-party Spotify front-end.)

It's a first gen smart watch brah.

--You can control Spotify playback from your phone by using the Music *glance* page on the watch, but not the Music app on the watch. (Basic transport controls only.)

Unacceptable! Sell it on eBay.

--Apparently I'm going to have to call my bank to re-authorize my credit card which is already auth'd for Apple Pay on my phone.

The pain!

--Yes, the OS is slow. A lot of Apps take so long processing that the watch face goes back to sleep in the interim.

What a POS man.

Nothing makes me take a post seriously faster than 'LOLZ' and calling someone with a username "Gwynne" 'brah'. Thanks for the input. Be sure to read the rest of my posts in the thread. And enjoy your evening, plenty of other opportunities for pointless sarcasm will come along.

I didn't try it on at stores. Wish I did, would've saved me 15 minutes. It's so frustrating the other way around lol :)

Yes, I did the 'try to put it in the slot first' approach for the first five minutes or so.

I don't think it's constructive to belittle someone's honest opinions. Try growing up a little.

I'll post my impressions in a little bit, but it's a bit of a mixed bag, I'm afraid. I think the initial reviews were pretty much on the money.

Mixed bag is pretty accurate. And yes, some people don't want to hear any criticism. But I'm a wide-eyed early-adopter. I know what I'm getting into, and I'm also going to be honest about the downsides. There is a certain 'eh' factor that wasn't there for me with, for example, the first-gen iPad. I cringe when people bring "Steve Jobs" into the discussion, but I'm not 100% sure this is the product he would have rolled out. (Can I say that much without it being taken as blasphemy?)

That said, I'm still here posting and reading about the device, so it's not ALL 'eh'.

Wife got her 42mm and I am waiting on mine. After playing with it a while, I already wish they made a bigger size than 42mm! For real, I cannot even imagine trying to use the 38mm....just so tiny to do stuff on.

I have small wrists and pretty small (but not tiny) hands. I can barely do the passcode without errors on the 38mm.

After the initial excitement with any new Apple device, I usually feel a bit meh because they incorporate into daily life unobtrusively. For me, what I like most is that the watch makes it easier to do the things I already do. I already check my notifications, but not doing it 50x per day on my phone makes my life easier. I already pay with apple pay, but not having to transfer shopping bags while holding my phone and simultaneously keeping an eye on kids makes my life easier. I can grocery shop without pulling my phone out every 2 min to check my list and see if I need to reply to a text without stopping, putting everything I'm carrying down to pull my phone out.

I got a watch to make my life a tiny bit easier, many times a day, rather than changing my life in a big way.

That being said, I am eagerly waiting for a mail app that I can reply/send emails in, and I would like to be able to pull up all my contacts and not just the favorites. I also hope that I will be able to use the target and meijer coupon apps soon.

I'm really curious how the watch affects your phone battery; i.e., how much all that syncing and data sharing drags your phone battery down. I know it's only day one, but does anyone notice your phone battery dropping significantly since you synced up the watch?
