I think this is more an issue with HomeKit then with HomePod. I had a nightmare installing my Lutron Caseta lights the first time around, but the hour long full reset thing cleared everything up.

HomePod also requires both two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain to be turned on.

I'm not so sure about this. I have iCloud Keychain turned off on all devices including my iPhone, and my HomePod setup was quick and flawless. I do use 2-factor authentication, but that was never triggered during setup, and I don't see why it should be needed when setting up a speaker using an adjacent iPhone.

I had issues when I first got it. It was because of me trying to set it up on the hotel WiFi I was staying in. Are the people having issues in college or shared access dorms?
I want to buy one, but if I cannot set it up on my university's network (enterprise) then there's no point.

Why not? (Within Reason)

This should be about application or integration compatibility, not operating system compatibility. i.e. the device should be talking to the Music App and the HomeKit App, which should be available on a number of recent versions of the OS.

I had same issue when I got my Apple Watch (Cellular) recently, to run I had to upgrade my my iPhone 6 onto an OS version (11.2) that essentially crippled it (The much publicized 'battery/slowdown' case). Very frustrating...

HomePod needs to work with new APIs (control center's remote control/HomeKit/MediaPlayer API/AirPlay 2). So you'll need to bring over a huge chunk of APIs from iOS 11 to iOS 9. Some of these APIs probably need more CPU power/memory to make it work and knowing iPhone 5's last iOS version supported is iOS 10 and iPhone 4S' last iOS version supported is iOS 9, Airplay may not perform correctly.

It appears that the HomePod software has a HomeKit inheritance problem.

Nothing to do with music. As a HomeKit hub, the HomePod must proxy for any existing home automation configuration already in place.

My take:
  1. If the current HomeKit configuration is NULL (empty), then the initialization of HomePod will be seamless (as long as the keychain and two-factor authentication are iCloud enabled.)
  2. Else, if the current HomeKit configuration is NOT NULL (there are active scenes in place), then the initialization may fail to inherit and proxy HomeKit properly (requiring a reset of the existing scenes).
The catch:
There is no easy and direct way to reset an ill-formed HomeKit configuration, requiring a long timeout for the reset to be allowed.

Mine just worked no issues or problems. I always wonder whether the people whose phones don't work have jailbroken them or loaded something to cause issue with the 'standard install' ...

Guess we will never know - but the whiners will always whine.

I'll stick with my Sonos Ones, perhaps the HomePod does sound a little better, perhaps not. But you get 2x Sonos Ones with Alexa for the same price $349. Plus I've had no setup issues at all, including using all the features that the HomePod released without such as stereo mode, and they support Apple Music. The only downside is no Siri integration, though I'm not convinced that is a downside :)

10 days after release, the proclamation has been made.

Shall I take you back to what people said about AirPods 10 days after release?
Different situation. HomePod won’t be worth my money until Apple fixes Siri. Once they fix that and the setup issues, I’ll get one, but it’s not at that point yet

And I was sold on AirPods from the beginning.

we have been battling siri working at all she will just not respond sometimes. after comparing the home pod to our other speakers and even the B&O bluetooth speaker we had we realize it is just not that big of a deal. it would be good in places like the kitchen if we did not already have two sonos 1's in there. so though it cost me I got my wife this guy since it uses airstream and thats the feature she wants. plus with the B&O speaker it supports more connection options and will stream more services on its won. plus the nice big disc on top lets you do a lot of controlling my blind wife will love that.https://www.beoplay.com/en/products/beoplaym5

for maybe they have problems? think all apple products are perfect? turn on voicer and you can see bugs all over the place.

When you consider the high premium pricing Apple charges for it’s products, is it not acceptable to expect the QA to be their from the start?

Meh I will continue to moan about Apples software, I think it’s hardware is alright, the software is just terrible with bugs in my experiences in the last year!
Some people talk about bugs in iOS and MacOS but never say what they are. What bugs are you referring to?

At first my HomePod worked just fine with AirPlay, but after my first attempts, it mysteriously quit working for both control and audio output from iTunes on my Mac and for audio output via AirPlay from my AppleTV. No amount of restarting everything (Mac, iPhone, HomePod, AppleTV, AirPort router) solved it.

However, another user on another forum noted the same problem and thought to reset the Allow Speaker Access setting in Homekit from "Only People Sharing This Home" to "Everyone". This solved my problem too. The setting "Anyone On the Same Network" also solves the problem. Everything is working great now. Apparently the issue is that MacOS doesn't link directly to HomeKit.

If you need the MAC address:

1. Connect to another person's phone via hotspot with your Mac and iPhone

2. Scan with LanScan

3. Find your HomePod MAC

4. Disconnect from hotspot, reset HomePod

5. Manually enter MAC address and connect to WiFI

Is that Apple new Connect and Play? Steve Jobs would have thrown this in a garbage.

Least of their worries.

#woodgate :p :D

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

Apple's HomePod speakers leave white marks on wood - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-43064772

No that is not true. Silicon and rubber can react with certain waxes and oils. Nothing comes off the HP and this is an issue with many things. Why do people spread these clickbait lies?

Installed many of these and the bridge. Setup was quick and flawless every time.

This speaker is a storm of failures by Apple. Why release such a half-baked speaker. Coming from a company that makes billions every quarter in profit. Apple has managed to dumbify perceptions though as to what good sound is, just like they managed to have millions of people be OK with crappy earbuds on their iphones for years.
Disagree 1000%. Did you even buy one?

LOLO... piece of garbage lol.
I was looking for a clip of Kelly Bundy when she was explaining the pregnancy tests with every detail. It sounded like that.

Apple is doing that, every time they come up with anything they want you to update your OS. For what:
1. To make your machine slower filling up with useless garbage you do not need
2. To show off that everybody is downloading their latest OS because everyone loves it!

And now these... a speaker nobody needs which is not relevant at all in the market. As revolutionary as the Apple Watch iPhone X and the annoying touch screen function thing they placed in the lastest LAPTOPS.

Why are you here exactly?

I applaud Apple for doing their _best_ to create a seamless experience. There's so many different factors that they need to account for, it's amazing that it all works as well as it does. I'm sorry for those that run into errors. Apple is not perfect. But the number of complaints that I have can be counted on one hand.

While setup was a breeze, the darn thing hasn’t functioned properly for the last two days. Siri keeps stalling and eventually times out no matter the request.
“Hey, Siri turn off bedroom lamp”
“Working on it...”
“I’m having some trouble with this...”
Etc.
Even setting up an alarm causes Siri to stall. I’ve reset the HomePod once so depending on what happened today I may reset once more, otherwise back to Best Buy it goes.

Sounds to me like you may have an internal home networking issue? Does Siri work quickly from your phone over Wifi?

This overpriced, over hyped product is a total DUD and is worthy for select apple heritage fans and fanatics only.
Trade publication and consumer magazine reviews aside it has limitations, difficult setup for many (read in many blogs not just Mac Rumors), marginal sound quality (powerful yes but that does not constitute quality sound), beautiful yes but so what if the overall functionality is weak (Siri Flaws, Home and connection obstacles etc). I could go on but whats the point as Apple fans will purchase and love it however many if not most clear thinking people will roll their eyes and move on to another better suited choice. Final analysis: Possible but not guaranteed win for the Apple stockholders/board members and lets not forget being held hostage to upgrade to the latest iOS build (lags and all) and last it could very easily be considered "indentured slavery" to the Apple Ecosystem.
As an Apple loyalist and enthusiast I very much wanted to buy and love this product but it just does not cut it especially at the offered price point. ;)
