Four months after launch, iOS 16 users continue to report experiencing a plethora of bugs, ranging from slow keyboard pop-ups, random rebooting, UI glitches, camera freezes, and more.

Apple released iOS 16 in September and has since released multiple follow-up updates to address bugs and security patches. The most recent update for the operating system is iOS 16.2, released on December 13. iOS 16.2 brought a new Freeform app, new always-on display options for the iPhone 14 Pro, new lock screen widgets, 5G support for India, and more. Along with the latest features, the update also brought many bugs and system glitches, according to user reports.

Across Twitter, Reddit (1,2,3,4,5,6), the MacRumors forum (1,2,3,4), and Apple Support, users say they're experiencing an unusual amount of bugs and poor system performance following the most recent iOS 16 update. According to users, the issues are wide-ranging, including Spotlight search glitches, the keyboard not appearing in apps, excessive battery drain, the Camera app freezing, problems with Focus modes, Apple Music app bugs, HomeKit accessories not working, and CarPlay glitches.

On Reddit, users report that apps can freeze after they're opened or crash entirely while in use. "This started happening after updating to iOS 16.2, where I'll be using an app (happening on any app), and the application freezes for a couple of seconds," one user said. "Yeah it's been awful! I even decided this year was the year to upgrade my phone to 14 Pro and it's been so bad," said another user.

Users also report ongoing issues with the Home app following the iOS 16.2 update. One new feature of the update was an overhaul of the architecture of the Home app. Apple announced the new architecture in June, promising faster, more reliable HomeKit performance. Following the release of the new app, however, users reported issues with accessories not working, forcing Apple to withdraw the update.

User reports suggest issues are not limited to any specific iPhone model, given iOS 16 is supported by the iPhone 8 and later models. Even with the latest high-end iPhones, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, users are experiencing issues, including a long-standing problem with the device lagging when a user closes out of an app.

iOS 16.2 was released last month after testing with developers and public testers since October. Through the beta testing period in October, November, and December, Apple released five updates, addressing bugs and issues reported by testers.

Given the nature of bugs experienced by some users on iOS 16.2, Apple could release iOS 16.2.1 before releasing iOS 16.3 several weeks later. Apple is currently testing iOS 16.3 with developers and public beta members with just a few new features.

Having dealt with bugs for the last 30 years of my life I have to ignore these surveys. People with problems are always on the look out for other people with problems and what you find is one irritating bug with a workaround turns into "the whole product is crap" and "this versions sucks". Sure there are bugs, but there are bugs in all products. Unless you're on the other side of the fence it's difficult to quantify these.

But anyway, if you have a problem with an apple product, tell them rather than ********ing on Twitter: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

They fixed the three I submitted within 2 minor releases (one issue with reminders and one issue with notes)

Compare that to Microsoft who I held a bug open for 9 years via very expensive paid enterprise support on Connect that impacted 50,000. users and they never fixed it. The bug was only closed when they shut Connect down and deprecated Internet Explorer.

Mine:

1. Sleep Focus does not activate on its own (even though I get the reminder to go to bed) - worked fine on 6.1
2. AppleID for "Media & Purchases" still shown after logging out - you have to swipe back a page in settings and return to where you were (the iCloud settings) for it to be actually gone
3. lots of iCloud Messages storage issues (attachments) - Thread here
4. "Find My" and/or "Home" constantly running and eating battery over night
5. Store does not show the correct credit. Still shows 30$ available even though its 22$

Of course, so many bugs...

If there is one thing I've learned from the past few initial iOS releases is that its best to wait until 16.5 comes along.

Also felt I should've stayed on the last and latest release of iOS 15 when iOS 16 was first released a few months back.

Always on display on 14 Pro Max, during the night, "intelligently" turns off just after a few minutes. 00.00-02.00 AM would be the only time I can sit down with the phone on my desk and actually use the feature! 🤬

There was once a time I was looking forward to updates....

- OG HomePods stopped working a number of times after updating
- Battery life on my 14 Pro is terrible under 16.2, dynamic island lag is still present when closing applications, AirPods Pro Case shows "0%" all the time, cannot control the volume on my HomePod mini with my iPhone...these are just a number of bugs I have experienced since launch.

MacOs is the only platform for me that is running smoothly at the moment. Apple really has a problem with their software team...

not to mention glitches in HomePod os 16.2 as well. Looping tracks is not smooth at all. And if listening to white noise tracks to go to sleep it pauses when with jumps back to the start to loop and is super annoying that I can not use my HomePod mini any more to go to sleep to.

Apple is very capable of ignoring bug reports as well. Even Craig Federighi said as much: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/11/15/craig-federighi-on-apple-beta-program/

TVOS has a ridiculous bug in the up next list where text is corrupted.
Well known about apparently... (I didnt realise thought it was me)

But, I accept that many bugs are obscure and only found when the software makes it out into the wild....
However this one (and many others by the looks of things) should have been found at the most fundamental stages of testing - its very obvious and im so surprised apple seem happy to have this on everyones AppleTV - especially just after the launch of a new model etc.
