#Fadegate - I don't believe a clear case can cause the colour of metal to vanish, and since its in a case the owner cannot be held to account, unless the chemicals to make the case are reacting to the finish. I don't believe a plastic case rubbing would cause this either. Moisture does not tarnish aluminium / stainless steel. It's not UV because if this was the case this means that every iPhone in the sun over time would have a similar issue.

Maybe the red editions have a difference colour lacquer / varnish / finish on them and this is coming off over time just based on normal use even with a case. It's possible the finish on the metal differs from the finish on the back (glass) to make is stick to the device. Common sense would indicate paint ingredients would differ between these two surfaces. On the flip side maybe Apple should do some "vignette" paint styles - dark fades to light or vice versa or that fancy "ChromaFlair" paintwork that changes depending on angle or an iPhone Patina edition.

so we are at 200,000,000 devices sold between 11 and 12 , and we get some random guy posting a pic of discoloring and this goes straight to the main page and ppl are reacting to this like its a known , wide spread issue with the phone?
Slow day today I guess.
It’s not just ‘one guy’ though is it? We’ve seen this happening on red iPhones since 2016. It’s even happened to iPhones used in clear cases so seems to a UV issue. We are in the 5th year now so hopefully Apple will finally address it.

Hand Sanitizer will eventually have that effect on a painted object. It would have faded only slight naturally, but sanitizer only accelerates the process.

This is the MO of the Macrumors forums. Most people that post here don't realize that most people out in the rest of the world don't read the Macrumors forums and most issues that get posted here are a storm in a teacup for entertainment value. I love this place for the great discussion. I hate it for all the FUD and other garbage that gets perpetuated just because people are bored or hate Apple for whatever vapid reasons they have.

Well said. This is about as well researched and written - original article included - as a flat earth theory explanation.

Looks better than the original color imho...

This years Red was very disappointing to me.

Reminds me of my blue Nokia N8 which had the same issue. I guess it’s bound to happen on anodized aluminum finishes. Btw I don’t get why it HAS to be metal. When did we decide plastics were no good?

Apple's still the best in the game by a longshot but their quality control ain't what it used to be.

You can bet that Samsung’s marketing is ALREADY working on a tweet that says “GET OUR PHONE IF YOU DON’T WANT FADING” while the manufacturing guys are like COPY THAT!

Well said. On top of that, a second, individual team in Samsung is also working on figuring out the exact production process, just in case it becomes popular and needs to be copied.

I am concerned for my $1000+ phone ... what would people say when I post selfie’s on social media and they notice my phone’s color is fading... but I have to remember I have a phone case on 24/7 ;)

Interesting take. When. I take a selfie with my iPhone, said iPhone is hard to spot on the selfie as it’s the camera.

It should not. I've been "bathing" (fully soaked paper towel) my iPhone 11 in desinfection fluid every 3rd day for a year now... No issues. I also wash it with soap under the running tap once in a while.
Another poster mentioned strong acidic sweat... Well, unfortunately my iPhone also has to deal with that. Yet, looks like new.

I think this is just a quality escape... couple of frames where the anodizing wasn't done according to specification.

Well to be fair in regards to the nay sayers, most people don't rock their phone naked do they? Don't most put a case on it. So if that's the case there would less incidents of any coating wear.

Fadedgate was when Apple removed all vaporizing related apps, and users of Bluetooth enabled vaporizers have to now rely on Android.

I kind of understand how a California based company would not want to be associated with nicotine addiction though. Especially when you try to position yourself in the health market over the last few years.

I honestly thought that looked normal, at first, and couldn't understand what was wrong
