man apple cant do anything right for the last few years
Apple has never been able to do anything right. It’s just when they did things wrong in the past, you’d only hear if you showed up at the user group meetings or were signed into the right BBS’s. :)

Color fading has got to be the dumbest gate i've seen thus far. TO be clear, the initial article seems to say that they are fading beyond normal wear and tear. UV doesn't have to be widespread considering the majority of us haven't seen UV rays for the better part of the last year.

How do you know it is a manufacturing defect? At this point in time, we don't know what has caused the fade in each reported case. All we can do is speculate. And from some reports, the fading in some instances could be due to UV exposure when the phone(s) have been in a transparent case.

Until we know for sure, I don't think it is right to blame Apple.

UV exposure fading on a new model phone is 100% Apple's fault, end of story. You can't even be serious with that spin.

I almost like it better.

I've momentarily lost all confidence in Apple. They've lost and regained my trust in the past though.

Some iPhone 12 models have been losing color from their aluminum chassis, according to a new report from Svetapple.sk, which includes photos of a PRODUCT(RED) iPhone 12 model that has been noticeably leached of color.

The side of the iPhone 12 near the power button has faded to an orange shade and there's a clear delineation where the red coloring has worn off.

Svetapple.sk says that the iPhone has been used in a transparent case, so friction from a hand has not been a factor, though it's not clear if the case itself may have caused the issue.

There have been similar reports of fading from iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2 users. MacRumors reader t101, for example, shared photos of an iPhone 11 with a dramatic loss of color on the edges. That iPhone model had also been in a transparent case. While many of the reports have focused on the Red iPhone models, the fading has been seen less frequently on iPhone 11 models in different colors.

Some MacRumors readers speculated that the color fading is due to UV exposure enabled by the clear case, but the problem would likely be more widespread if it was a UV exposure issue. There has also been speculation that the issue could be caused by a chemical reaction with a case, but there's no clear cut explanation.

There are a limited number of reports about color fading, but this is a problem that seems to have persisted for years as there are complaints about the iPhone XR, too. Aside from the iPhone 12 photos shared by Svetapple.sk, we have not seen similar reports about color loss on other iPhone 12 devices, and this could be a manufacturing defect that's not widespread.

Apple likely considers the color fading to be a cosmetic issue, so it's not known if devices that are suffering from color loss will be replaced.

I wonder if the phone shown in that picture might have been the result of using a cleaner that started to react with the paint.

There was a similar issue with some early aluminum MacBook Pros. A good friend of mine has his wrist pads pit black-ish with a similar pattern, but I never had it on mine. It's been a while, but I think the end theory was that certain people's body chemistry messed with the aluminum or anodization.

Interesting pattern for the color loss. Almost like it was sandblasted or wiped off with solvent (which it almost certainly was not). If it was inside a case, mold release inside a case?

Apple should obtain the phone (exchange for a new one), talk to the owner and figure out what happened.

It should not. I've been "bathing" (fully soaked paper towel) my iPhone 11 in desinfection fluid every 3rd day for a year now... No issues. I also wash it with soap under the running tap once in a while.
Another poster mentioned strong acidic sweat... Well, unfortunately my iPhone also has to deal with that. Yet, looks like new.

I think this is just a quality escape... couple of frames where the anodizing wasn't done according to specification.

What color is your phone?

I have extremely acidic skin and the entire edge of my MBP was pitted black - I ended up replacing the top case twice over the course of the 7 years I had it.

But this issue looks completely different. I suppose it could be related to UV, but it would require ALOT of sun exposure or perhaps continuous use of one of those UV sanitizer boxes that are all the rage now ?

Most all things in life suffer from these issues, even colour prints fade over time, white paint on door frames go yellow over time these things happen just cosmetic all Apple can do us look into it for the next update to minimise the effects

It’s Literally the “you’re holding it wrong” meme come to life 🤣

We really are living in a simulation, aren’t we?

I have a pro so I’m fortunate I won’t be leaving all sorts of nasty annodizing chemicals all over my skin. Yuck!

This wouldn’t bother me so long as it doesn’t rub off on my hands.
Too many people around here treat their phone as if it were a priceless museum work of art. And that art should be perfect in every way at all times regardless of what the owner does (or not).

It is rather sad that so many people hold their Apple devices to a such a high standard than they do their own actions and conduct.

It very well could be the clear case material interacting with the color.

I always use Apple leather cases that are lined in a thin soft material.

This has been a known issue since iPhone 7.

If you want it to last, don't get red and expose it to direct sunlight.

If it‘s been a known issue for years why hasn’t Apple found a solution and fixed it?

I had a PB with that problem.

I just figured: “use something for hours every day for years, it might start to show wear.”

I guess I’m from a different time.

I am not spinning anything. I have no reason to spin. I get dizzy too easy.

Once again, we have all the facts. I reserve judgment until I have the facts.
No, you made a supposition based on zero facts which, of course, was Apple did nothing wrong. If you have no facts, then don't even freaking weigh in, period.
