My iphone is one with the brown discoloration issue. I called apple support and they set me up with an appointment at the apple store here, but not until Friday. Has anyone restored their iphones 4 to see if it changes anything? I'm doing that right now

Won't do anything.

People thought it was a "software" issue on the 3GS. Resetting, restoring the phone does nothing. It's hardware.

lol who buys apple products on launch date???

sukas...dats who.

i'll be waiting til next years version without any problems.

That logic is flawed. Why wouldn't next years phone have an issue? Next years version will be new too with a new iOS.

hmmmm

...is it just me or are there a LOT more newbies* on the MR these days....?

Anyway, me no have no special iThingy (i like computers w/big screens i don't have to squint), but my buddy got his today and i can report:

1) The screen is perfecto (like seriously- seems even sharper than my MBP CD 2.16, matte!!) no stains, yellow or otherwise.

2) he does experience the 'drop bar' effect, if held as shown in the Gizmodo vid, but it takes a bit for one bar, then another, then another to go down (but there's always at least two bars left- 'no service' has yet to appear) and as he remarked, he doesn't ever hold the phone that way. He did have a dropped call today, but he had full bars (and the other dude was in Riverside - that's Cali for you non-Cali folks).

So, sorry to everyone who had issues this first time around, but as anyone who has purchased ANY mac item in the last -oh, say 20 years?- this kinda thing ALWAYS happens- and it ain't just Apple.

Saying 'calm down, breathe' is no answer to those who have been waiting breathlessly - whoa, trippy- he just spoke to his phone, it spoke back to him and asked whether to call me at home or mobile. And it did! So...oh wow- it talks to him!!!

ok, yeah, so you can see why everyone's all crazed right now- but seriously, those of you who have one and it's not perfect, you should enjoy how awesome it really is, and then know that at least Apple is pretty good at fixing the stuff that's broke- and speaking as someone who had to send in his MBP multiplie times (heck, they practically gave me a brand new one w/everything they replaced, and altho' i didn't *tell* them that i dropped it a couple times, it still came back about as close to perfect a three year old machine could get). uhhh, ok what year is this? so yeah, it's a FOUR year old machine...

I paid $4000 for my MBP in 2003- BTO'd baby, all the way. pimped extreme. And to this day, i still love it; it's not as fast as my other buddy's i7, not nearly as fast!, but it can still do some great stuff- and if and when i do get another, i'll still always love this guy, like i loved my G3, that even though i didn't use in the last three years at all was still difficult to give away.

They don't make perfect stuff- no one does - but they get pretty damn close if you ask me.

(*no offense intended, but if you are offended, then i'm not sorry)

I just knew someone would post something stupid like this.

I was going to say:

"Bring on the people w/ perfect devices who say this nothing more than the rarest of flukes and does NOT indicate a QC problem at Apple requiring a recall or a patch....... that is until the problems continue to escalate and Apple issues a recall or a fix. Then all of a sudden, it become legitimate."

(Yellow tinting on iMacs, iMacs w/ cracked corner screens): Then these jackasses crawl back into their hole and stay quiet to the fact they were wrong.

Look, just because YOUR device is perfect doesn't mean there can't be a mass problem requiring attention.

Congrats! You're the first one. You must feel soooo proud of yourself! Thanks for your empathy... NOT!

Yeah it was a stupid comment, agree with you there. I'm thankful mine arrived eight hours ago in perfect condition as far as I can tell; obviously haven't used every possible feature as of yet but the screen is fine.

I guess time will tell if this is an issue affecting a majority or not - MacRumors audience isn't exactly a typical sample population with so many of us on the extreme sides of fanboism and haters.

Wish everyone a defect free iPhone, not for Apple's sake but I because I can imagine the let down of being so excited to purchase a new product and then receive one with issues.

CalebF, hope your new iPad remains dent-free;)

Iphone 4g

i think its just people out there hating. i got my iphone4 this morning and it has not been one problem at all.

You sell 500,000 of anything in the electronics industry and you can expect at least 5000 unhappy campers due to manufacturing defects not caught by QC. 4998 of them will post on the Internet about it. 10,000 other people will post on the Internet claiming to have the problem even though they've never owned the device in question, whether it's a Samsung TV, a Nintendo game console, or an Apple phone.

Yellow tinting is a common defect in LED-backlit screens, particularly but certainly not exclusively those made by LG. It just comes with the territory and isn't always revealed in factory testing. There is no magical way to catch every defect before sale. Given the widely reported yield problems of the iPhone display, it's no surprise there are some lemons, same as the iMac (and the Dell monitor using the same panel).

Whining and foot-stamping by the vocal few aside, the numbers speak for themselves in terms of quality control and consumer satisfaction. Anyone expecting perfection for 100% of buyers at a consumer price is off his meds, woefully uninformed about how the electronics industry works, or both.

If you get one you're not happy with, once there is replacement stock available, you can have it replaced. It's hardly the end of the world.

Mine has yellow on both left and right sides, with a stronger concentration in the bottom corners. Just talked to Apple support and they're swamped. I'll just wait till Apple responds, bcuz it's clear this is widespread.

Thanks smacky, a voice of reason and wisdom. Refreshing!

Yeah, everyone posting about this problem is LYING just to hate on Apple. What kind of asinine comment is that?

Apple seems to have a well known ISSUE regarding yellow LCD panels. Going back a little while from what I read. My experience is only with the 3GS and that alone was a nightmare.

I shouldn't have to take time out of my day to setup a return/replacement on a brand new phone out of the box with issues. Granted I FULLY understand there are some duds - however there seems to be A LOT of duds just going by what I see on here. I am curious to know how many are really out there that will never be known because most people either don't care enough to get it fixed and just "deal with it" or don't even notice to begin with.

What price constitutes perfection? $300, $500, $700, $1000? I would love to know this. I strive for perfection. Everyone should. Sometimes there is no such thing, that's fine.

What you fail to realize - the SCREEN is the most important thing of the iPhone. How on earth did they screw it up yet again?

It might not be a wide spread issue but I'm one of the lucky ones that has the yellowing. Mine isn't quite as bad as some of the picture I have seen but there are yellows spots on in the bottom left and right corners.

Hey, maybe this is why Apple askes Samsung to be a second manufacturer of their screens. Maybe they have been having problems with LG for what, over a year now? Things like this happen all the time in manufacturing. Usually you can expect 1-2% returns for defects on any product launch. LG may have been upwards of 2.5 to 5% in the last year, hence all the display problems.

Come on people....

$200 iPhone compared to FREE Android Phones, $700 Mini compared to $400 low-end PC's, $500 iPad compared to $250 Netbooks...

Apple BETTER have NEAR-FLAWLESS products...

Not around here. Apparently MR logic is: if you have any problems, it's your own damn fault!

27 reports so far at gizmodo, I'm in the third wave of launches set to be delivered on the 14th, I really hope Apple this is a fixable issue since I'm importing my phone from the uk and might not be able to easily replace it.

Yeah, mea culpa for jumping the gun, but the main reason I'm importing ti is because I'll save a bundle of cash on not paying for expensive phone plans as the UK ones are unlocked.
So far I've payed more than twice the market price of the unit in operators fees.
