Would you prefer that the problem didn't get reported? How is that an advantage for you? Calling the guy names doesn't make the issue go away, nor does censoring him if he has corroborative evidence to support his claims. It is an amazing thing to see how defensive people become in defending Apple whenever product flaws are reported, almost as if pointing out problems with Apple is some sort of personal insult to Apple customers. I've been a customer of Apple stuff for quite a while, going back to Jobs' first tenure. My observation is that flaws seem to increase in direct proportion to prices. Sure, perhaps they eventually get fixed, but in the meantime folks spending thousands of dollars on their computers and devices are becoming alpha-beta testers unbewittingly. It's also not especially informative to post "My iThingy works just fine." No one has said that _all_ iThingies of a certain type have issues; just that a significant number do. You having a working product doesn't make anyone with a flawed product disappear or be wrong about their complaints, especially after having spent $1000+.

In my hands, a key variable seems to be whether the Lightning cable is an Apple cable or 3rd party. With an Apple cable, phone (Max) starts charging immediately even if screen is off. Switch to a 3rd party cable (Amazon basics in this instance), and it won't start charging until I wake and unlock the phone, AND unplug and replug the Lightning cable back in. I guess there's a chip in those cables?

Apologies if this has been posted a bunch of times. I discovered this by accident when switching from an Apple to a longer Amazon one.

My iPhone Xs Max does not start to charge at all, not even when waking the phone. I have to plug in the cable when the phone is awake/unlocked for it to start. I'm mostly using wireless chargers so haven't noticed this until now. Very strange.

This post is far too logical to be a part of this thread.

Tested mine after viewing the video, and fortunately, mine doesn’t exhibit any of the issues with charging. To me, I’d say this issue is software related.

I can’t help but thinking this is the price we pay for being early adopters (me included). Additionally, with the numbers of devices being sold, there are bound to be defects. Think about a six sigma approach here and even with that small number, how large the defect tolerance will be.

I’m sure apple will take care of their customers, they always have. While the potential signal issue has/had me irked, I’m not willing to switch ecosystems and especially not to Android.

I’m confident Apple will get this right.

Really, I’m glad folks with an audience can/will point this stuff out. Perhaps it sheds enough light to help a quicker resolution.

The old “squeaky wheel gets the oil thing”.

He seemed fine to me.

All these wannabe non-technical, non engineer you tubers like Unbox Therapy have made lots of money and had so many clicks to their youtube channel over the years. It's all about gathering and keeping attention on themselves with the disguise of claiming they "have" to buy Apple iPhones because it's their jobs to review all the gear that comes out. And there's another YouTuber who is telling anybody who will listen and yelling off the rooftops how bad Apple is now, and how Steve Jobs would NEVER have allowed this, yet he goes out and buys a 5K iMac Pro, allegedly scraping together all his money to do so. All haters, in my opinion who see nothing right that Apple does. And then there are the ones who complained when the 6 and 6 Plus phones came out that all the sizes should have the same specs and features. Apple did that with the XS and XS Max, and now the same ones are complaining that there aren't enough differences to justify the higher price of the Max. Nothing ever satisfies them. But that's their plan from the get go: to criticize Apple and get all the "iSheep" (another derogatory term made famous by a company who used to make awful mp3 players nobody wanted) mad and click them up, as well as keep the Android fans pacified. It's all in their game plan. Unbox Therapy got on the map because he went out of his way to bend a phone that under normal circumstances, would not be damaged that way, even in a back pocket. Bottom line: people hate, and are envious of Apple. Apple is a business, and wants your money just like Samsung and Google, and all these other companies (and YouTubers as well). And they all have a right to make as much money as possible. My gripe is how some of them go about their business with lies, half truths, and pitting people against one another. Quite a few of the comments on lots of these you tube sights are downright vile and disgusting.
If you are throwing Louis Rossmann into the category of "wannabe non-technical, non-engineer" - not saying you are, just that there seem to be tangental barbs - I beg to disagree. He's a competent computer repair technician in his mid-twenties, who makes his money specializing in MacBook repairs out of his shop in Manhattan, and makes money on the side with both editorial and technical commentary on youtube. His considerable experience repairing Apple laptops over a period of time, and with various old and new versions of the product, gives him not only insight into both bad and good points with the equipment, but also with corporate philosophy and practices of Apple in dealing with their customers and repair technicians, both Apple affiliated and independent (as is Rossmann). If you actually watch some of his repair videos on MacBooks, you'll see that they are quite instructive. This guy knows what he's doing and of what he speaks. He'll also call foul on PC and Android manufacturers when warranted (recently called out Samsung:
) , but he does specialize in Apple repair so deals mostly with that. It would be interesting to find out what led him to specialize in Apple laptop repair, as he has the skill to work on various computer and phone products. My guess is that competent Apple repair folks are in high demand in the Manhattan area.

when i plug in my iPhone 6 via cable at night on the iHome clock/radio/charger if my screen is not unlocked it will not always start charging and the screen tells me to unlock to allow charging.

this is with an Apple Cord too.

Absolutely ridiculous. Especially considering the price of these things. If Apple charges a premium, they need to deliver on the premium experience.

Makes me wonder, what will happen if someone like yourself spends 10 grand on the new Mac Pro when it’s out and it ends up also having serious problems? Because I know your waiting for it.. makes you think doesn’t it?

No issues for my Xs Max. I'm running beta 12.1 - In fact I left my phone rest over night and this morning(very carefully so I wouldn't wake the phone up) I plugged the lightning cable and it reconized it right away. I unplugged it, waited a minute holding it flat on my hand, plugged it again and it reconized the able again.

This is happening on my iPhone 6 as well after updating to iOS12, the phone won't start charging until you wake it up.

Therefore I suspect it's an iOS issue.

The deal with Lew and Unbox is, they get the most hits when they post controversial iPhone videos. He posts Android videos all the time and doesn't get near the hits he gets with the iPhone. He doesn't even really review any other Android phones. He mentions some features and maybe some minor things, but that's it.

His largest views come from posting about issues he has with iPhones. All the while he skins his MacBook Pro to try and hide the fact that its his go to machine and the Android fanboys eat it up. He gets his ass constantly kissed by these cheap Android phone makers like Huawei has really just become a marketer for those types of manufacturers.

What are you talking about? lol He reviews many android phones.

If you remove the bendgate video with the iPhone 6, his 10 most popular mobile phone videos, 8 are about Android phones and 2 are about iPhones. So your post is quite inaccurate.

Some folks commenting here seem to miss the fact that this dude makes his living on YouTube. At 3.2m views you may call him desperate, but he 's doing exactly what youtube pays him to do. Getting views.

You can argue that a lot of those views are a result of his name and being a known phone "reviewer" on YouTube. You'd be right. Likewise, Apple uses the clout of their own name to sell products year after year. It's marketing. He's doing it right.

PS I don't watch his videos almost ever, in case someone reads this as a defense of his. In fact I never watch his videos, unless they're posted on a site like this. But I also can't deny what's happening here. Whether people can admit it or not he's successful at what he does.

Their new thing is "Charge way more for less". They upped the price last year by $250 because they thought they could. Then they release a lesser tech phone at the same price as their competition. Now that marked up top of the line phone doesn't even work right. My latest MacBook "Pro" is by far the worst Mac I have ever owned. Keyboard problems, worthless Touch Bar, no ports, tons of wakeup problems, battery life, won't turn on unless the battery takes a charge even when plugged in......

GREAT WORK TIMMY.

Lol, am I the only one (cringy) that had this problem on iOS 11 with the iPhone X? I never reported because it didn't bother me at all, I simply tap the screen and it starts charging.

Why? For reporting a issue for some users that means they cant charge their £1000+ iPhone! He is calling Apple out, he would do the same to any company if he thought it was wrong and he is looking at price here too. Hell you would expect more major bugs with a £200 phone but it seems not with Apple at the moment. Yes you expect the odd issue but not things like the LTE, WiFi, camera beauty mode and to top it off you can't charge the thing to experience the bugs anyway!

It feels like people on here are more worried about what their friends will think of their expensive phone because they and users on other platforms might see Lewis Hilsenteger's video and laugh or something! I mean its made by Apple and its so perfect and its never Apples fault if it goes wrong, but some on this forum would laugh like mad if it were Samsung having the same issue. People really need to see constructive criticism for being just that and also the guy makes healthy millions from YouTube so yes he will make a dramatic video, its his job too. What he does do is call out any company, Samsung, Huawei etc if they are trying to pull the wool over people eyes, he is not just after Apple, the guy is pretty fair tbh.

Hilsenteger is just calling out faults on devices so users about to spend hard earned cash don't get a lemon, or in this case so people don't get caught out not being able to charge their phone, making it a pretty expensive paper weight. If you are offended because it upsets your iPhones public image, or your daily worship of a trillion dollar company that can do better, you have more problems than the phone has right now! Apple is letting to many bugs and hardware issues out the door and is riding on its name and lofty status and not caring about its users way to often these days. (yes I have a iPhone XS, 2017 iMac, iPad etc so I'm not a hater) I just don't like what I see right now from Apple.

issues that you can live with till its fixed.
This is like Tesla selling you a 100k car and you driving around all day coming home and plugging it in. Waking up the next day for work and the car is dead because it wasn't charging.

Id imagine someones phone is used for work and they need it ready in the morning when they sleep. If the phone is basically dead by morning its a huge issue.

Its not a small problem and should of never happened. Hopefully there is a fix next week.
my max is fine but I would of been mad if I had this problem for the past week.
Don't think there are many that can't charge at all...

I got a letter from BMW stating that my airbag could explode and project metal into the cabin. Also said no remedy is available as of now.

Got a second letter saying my climate control fan wiring can start a fire and if I see smoke coming through the vents, pull over and get away from the car. No remedy available.

The Apple charging issue is not widespread and can probably be worked around with restarts, tapping the screen to turn on, retries, or worst case, using wireless charge.

If this impacted any serious number of people, front page of NY Times.

'Serious problem'. It's a bug lol. Talk about clickbait. I'm not a huge Apple defender, but this guy is desperate.

It’s like, a requirement to have a Youtube channel these days, paint statements with the widest possible brush, and everything is TERRIBLE. I like seeing various reviewers saying they’re going to return a phone and three vids later “we’ll I went back in and changed back to my iphone i returned...”

it’s all so much garbage and grandstanding without any actual content.
