Neither is this an unfinished product nor a beta. Technology has bugs, even if it costs a lot you cannot possibly predict the behavior of a gadget on such a larger scale use. Plus, millions of iPhones are sold in weeks (on launch) so it is inevitable that some issues surface however they get blown more out of propotion just because the press and YouTubers get more clicks/views with thumbnails and captions that are against Apple even if a few hundred out of millions are facing it. Plus, Apple cares and has a 14 day replacement and an exchange policy if you face any issues which is highly rare. To top it all most of these issues like the WiFi/LTE reception issue, beauty mode issue and charging problem will be solved in the next software update. Last year a lot of people called the screen unresponsiveness in iPhone X a hardware issue and it turned out Apple fixed in within the second week of announcement. Remember?

Why are you defending a trillion dollar company?

Any bug in any Apple product should always be blown out of proportion. Many problems in the past Apple has taken them YEARS to acknowledge. Millions of customers over the years had to waste their time and shell out thousands of dollars to fix faulty graphic cards, swelling batteries, and broken antennas only for Apple to acknowledge the problem years later. Without apologizing and without compensating people.

It happens on my 6s since iOS12. I thought it's because of that USB security thing... nothing dramatic, could be simply fixed via software update. Unbox Therapy is getting to be quite annoying.

Funny thing is ...

This issue is caused purely by Apple’s lacking quality control teams efforts. This should NOt have happened as it’s a basic function of a phone. If some store reps are replacing the iPhones that exhibit this behaviour then it is time and money lost needlessly. More over the annoyance is pluggin in your phone to charge expecting it to charge like any others and yet it’s not. Sure this can be fixed by software/firmware update yet the issue has varying symptoms which is confusing and affecting new customer brand image and thus future potential sales.

This shouldn’t happen and if it wasn’t Unboxing Therapy doings this video then it would be someone else. Simply he’s very smart and jumped on this very quickly. He knows his audience and the Internet audience by large rather well and even if he’s annoying he’s leading with views and brand expansion by every mention of this issue and his channel. To me this is taking opportunity by the balls and running with it.

Where is Marque Brown’s video on this? Oh he’s too elite and paid pockets by Apple to shed any negative light on Apple now.

What exactly am I over-exaggerating? Did you even read the article or watch the video? I’ve seen this issue casually mentioned multiple times in unrelated threads and didn’t think anything of it. How that I see how widely reported it is, with threads all over the place, and see it in action where 5 out of 8 phones had the issue (and one didn’t even charge at all), yes this is absolutely a serious problem right now. People are accustomed to their phones charging when they plug them in (weird, I know), and not everyone has a wireless charger or would think to wake their phone every time just to charge it. Even then, sometimes it stops charging (or never starts at all). For you to even suggest this isn’t a big deal, that’s pure apologist speak.

I don’t care if it’s software or hardware, the bottom line is it’s a problem. For you to downplay it just because you don’t like the guy, that’s just plain petty and silly. I personally can’t stand the overall anti-Apple sentiment on his channel, but that doesn’t discount the fact that this issue needs attention.

Did you even watch the video? Some phones stop charging even after the workaround, and some don’t even start charging at all. So yes, that is a problem. You shouldn’t need a “temporary solution” on a $1,000 phone, for something that has always worked perfectly fine on previous phones.

It blows my mind how some people will downplay anything just because it’s Apple.

This is why I would wait till a revision 1.01 of the hardware starts to ship. Probably some tiny smd capacitor etc.. It seems some are fine which probably is a QC issue with how the units with issues are build (slightly out of value capacitor etc?)

In a month or so the next batch will probably be consistent in QC while the first group will probably have some software fix to force charging via glitching the HW every so often.

This video is cheap clickbait.

This matter is anything, but “a serious problem” o_O

It’s serious enough to affect brand image and potential new sales by very new customers to iPhone that are experiencing this. Phones should be able to charge. Prior to this Apple or any other smartphone manufacturer next had this issue it’s a very basic function and should have never been missed by Apple’s QC team of iOS before being golden master. I’m surprised all those public beta users haven’t experienced this as well.

4 symptoms to non charging by cable, means longer isolation and testing by Apple this weekend taking them away from other tasks and planning which is costing them and customers time and money calling and bringing the phone into stores while Apple staff have to go over hundreds of lines of code which I suspect is not fresh in their minds since they had thought iOS 12 would not have charging issues.

Let’s see Apple’s software update or press release discovering poor current to the charging block as the root issue- which I suspect it is.

The issue is the stupid melinnials branding of every issue being “gated” is the real annoyance.

My iPad mini 2 is having this issue too. Wondered why it was on 5% after leaving it plugged in overnight :(

A number of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners in the Apple Support Communities and MacRumors Forums report that the devices fail to start charging when a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

iphone-xs-lightning.jpg

As with many crowdsourced issues, experiences vary. In most cases, the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max begins charging once the user wakes the device by tapping or raising the screen. However, some users report having to both wake the iPhone and disconnect and reconnect the Lightning cable to get a charge.

In rarer cases, the iPhone stops responding entirely at some point after a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

Lewis Hilsenteger demonstrated the issue on his popular YouTube channel Unbox Therapy today by plugging a Lightning cable into one iPhone X, four iPhone XS, and four iPhone XS Max units. While the iPhone X began to charge, it appears two of the iPhone XS units and three of the iPhone XS Max units did not.

Unbox Therapy's video uses the hashtag #ChargeGate

Affected customers have documented the issue in at least a dozen discussion threads across the web, including the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors Forums, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and other forums and platforms. It's unclear how widespread the issue is at this time, but not everyone is affected.

Some users have speculated the issue could be related to USB Restricted Mode, introduced in iOS 11.4.1, which prevents an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from communicating with USB accessories via the Lightning connector if one hour or longer has passed since the device was last unlocked.

usb-restricted-mode-ios-12.jpg

However, while USB Restricted Mode is enabled by default in iOS 12, Hilsenteger and others say disabling the feature does not help. Apple also has a support document that ensures "your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch charges as usual when it's connected to a USB power adapter" with the feature toggled on.

In the YouTube comments on the Unbox Therapy video, some users claim to be experiencing the same issue on older iPhones and iPads, so there is a decent chance this is a software issue that could be addressed in a future iOS 12 update. In the meantime, there does not appear to be a workaround.

If you are affected by this issue, we recommend contacting Apple Support. Apple frequently passes on device information and diagnostics to its engineering teams to address potential bugs like these, so all feedback helps.

Apple did not respond to multiple requests for comment, but we'll update this article if we receive any information.

The more serious issue has been reported as being much rarer occurrence. And if that happens to you, you can walk in to the Apple store and they would replace it with a brand new phone on the spot. So for you to keep emphasizing the cost of the phone, as if you are “out” that money, is very disengeneous of you. You are not out anything.
As for expecting a new electronic device to never ever have any bug/issue... give me a break. Spare your anti Apple hatred.

Well, I do not excuse Apple for this issue, but from all of those things that make me really angry about Apple, those tiny software bugs just keep me calm. I never had a perfect Apple product without issues. But back in 2008, the Apple products were just expensive, not "are-you-f******-serious?" expensive, so I was not that mad.

Have had no issues like this with my XS with 12.0 unchanged from how it came in the box when I do plug in.
(just tested it to be sure and it worked, no issue).

Most of the time though I'm charging it on a $30 RAVPower Fast Charger I got from Amazon in a $13 Incipio flexible clear case. I am mentioning what I'm using because it's about as dirt cheap as you can go in charger's and cases and it all has been working perfectly from day one with my XS!

hard to believe it's a software issue, very weird.

it is if its not fixable are you kidding?

Who tells you that it’s not fixable?! It’s a simple bug, nothing else.

If it's not real how about "Apple did not respond to multiple requests for comment" then?

Why should apple respond to this garbage?!

If there is a problem, apple will fix it with an Softwareupdate within the next days, or affected devices will be replaced.

This gate sht is driving me crazy. Is there nothing else to worry about?

My iPhone 8 Plus does the same thing. It won't charge unless I unlock the phone, even in IOS 12. I find this annoying since sometimes, I don't realize its not charging and I reach my destination and remove it from the car and realize its not charged. :(
Happened to my SE last night too. Will have to see if it happens again.

I really do hope the next batch of phones will have both this problem and the cellular connectivity issues resolved.

I used to have this charging problem with older iOS 11.x versions on both my iPad Air and the iPhone 6 (before I retired that for the iPhone X). interestingly, I've only seen it ONCE on my iPhone X after updating it to iOS 12.0, and it's never happened to my iPad Air under iOS 12.0.

Maybe during the first weeks when that's all they've got, but many report getting refurbs.

I did a return for exactly this reason. The Genius didn’t have any in stock and was taking about remanufactured phones as possible replacements.

Who knows maybe remanufactured phones may be just the answer and have better hardware to address these problems. But for me, I decided to wait.

Well, same on iPhone 7 Plus since the introduction of USB accessory check. Would be less worth mentioning, if Apple didn't state that the device should charge if the accessory is not approved by user when introducing the feature. Anyway, I will not be very loud about this bug, as personally I havent't reported it to them yet. But still worth mentioning, as it clearly indicates that Apple doesn't check that the features work as advertised.

Reading these comments sounds like a lot of people have been having the same problem, with multiple types of phones and even older versions of iOS.

Not looking for an argument, but I must say that this all sounds rather unlikely.
I mean, my SE had problems charging for a while and it turned out it had some fluff in the lightning port.
Sometimes serious problems have very simple solutions.

Honestly I only noticed because of the issue being raised on here. All technology can and will have issues. It's how a company responds to issues that matters to me, a little bit of 'class' shown to their customers.

Unfortunately Apple have fallen down on this far too often and have been evasive, difficult and downright dishonest at times. They're not the only one's guilty of this. Hopefully we'll see a rapid acknowledgement and resolution.

No he doesn’t. He always has valid concerns.
He generally takes things about Apple out of context, and doesn't always understand the bigger picture. He also tends to grade Android on a massive curve.

I know, because I have an Android fanboy friend who loves sharing his videos with me. Lew's a moron.
