Having a monitor that requires constant software updates is one of the craziest things that ever happened to technology.

Although, from a commercial perspective this is an excellent opportunity for locking people into a constant hardware upgrade loop once software updates are no longer supported.
There also firmware updates for other monitors...

For a display everyone thinks is a terrible product…..they sure sold a ton of them and are out of stock everywhere.

Also all of the Cinema Displays had firmware that could be updated. I don’t remember if the first gen was available publicly or if it was just an internal service thing we had, but I know for sure the last iteration had a update…..for its built in camera…lol

I am happy to see a new Apple Display at what we expect to pay instead of one that costs as much as a Chevy Spark when kitted out. It’s a really well built monitor that has a really nice image. I’m guessing it’s just cool to hate anything Apple does now…

Alarmism too much? Between the 2 “growing” threads it’s like 10 people having issues…

its the people that haven't bought them that are in this thread patting themselves on the back. shrugs. I was just thinking the other day how much I like mine. No issues updating.

It’s the best monitor we at Apple have ever made. It’s fantastic, it’s beautiful.
Any issues? Will be fixed by a software Update.
No update possible? You’re upgrading it wrong!

The monitor would still work on older firmware. Just like how iPhones still work on older firmware/OS.
The camera on the Studio Display is problematic. Apple itself confirmed the issue and said a firmware fix was coming.

The update is likely
Can’t help but feel a monitor shouldn’t need software updates, should all come from the computerbox(TM)…
The update is likely for the display's camera. Back when we had the standalone iSight camera which sat on top of the display, that had software updates as well.

+1 here. Happened right out of the box. I got to see a picture on my new Studio Display for maybe 5 minutes while it was downloading the update, then the update failed and it went dark. Profoundly disappointing beyond words. HOWEVER I followed the instructions on Apple's website -- disconnected the TB cable at both ends, plugged it back in, waited -- and in about an hour the monitor attempted the install again. This time it was successful and it's been fine ever since. Overall I'm very pleased with the Studio Display, but that was the worst possible "Welcome to Apple" I could imagine.

Well we just need to compare it with the literal display it replaced. And it’s a downgrade in every aspect but 1, it looks a little nicer

Funny thing is. The cost you would save if you bought the “older” display apple sold before they made this you could purchase a 4K camera to use
