The display is objectively a bad investment and a downgrade.

Pretty much *any* monitor is objectively a bad investment because you don't buy monitors as an investment.

In addition the studio is *subjectivity* a downgrade.

Objective requires indisputable facts that cannot be denied. Given that the price and feature set puts the display on a decent price point for 5k monitors, people like it and are happy to buy it. In addition it has better speakers and a Webcam (irrespective of quality) than the LG. Ergo it cannot be *objectively* a downgrade

It's is objectively true that the sun is hot.

It is subjectivly true that the sun feels warm today.

Going to restart my thought that I deleted because it was probably a bit harsh without appropriate explanation.

A few people posting on a support forum that their software update failed is not really news. This does not appear to be a widespread problem - yet - so in my opinion this article was posted mostly because it would induce a new engagement session where the same battle lines are drawn and talked out over this product. I mean look at this discourse in here: if it ain’t some pithy comment that seems to act like every studio display is getting bricked out in the wild then it is someone complaining about the pricing of the product (or responding to someone complaining that they’re wrong).

View attachment 1989258**** I could buy a new iPhone 13 pro max for that ripoff. Perhaps that’s why am iPhone is included in the display

View attachment 1989257it have a 100nit difference and True Tone is useless for professional work. It’s cool but accurate color representation is more important.
View attachment 1989259**** vesa is decided afterwards, that’s backwards.
View attachment 1989261**** I would rather purchase Logitech streamcam for 60$ that already includes a superior sensor, can follow and havecenter stage built in. Or Brio ultra HD pro with 4K sensor and faceId functionality for 260$

View attachment 1989262**** the polishing cloth is absolutely worth it. As well as aluminum. For this pet project
First off, considering the LG as the predecessor is incorrect. Apple had nothing to do with LGs display. They just sold it. It’s a competing product.

This display is not useless for professional work. Having done professional print and video workflows I can attest to that. I would love to know what basis you have there for that statement. I wouldn’t grade a Hollywood film on it, but it’s not useless. A good amount of “professionals” I’ve seen use a lot worse than this. A video editor is not going to need an XDR if he isn’t the one grading the film. That statement is just way off base with no context. For someone pumping out YouTube videos for a living like “Rene Getting Ritchie off Apple”, this display would meet his “professional” needs.

Your own charts prove it is an upgrade over the LG and thereby being an upgrade from the Thunderbolt Display.

You want to save $300 and buy a display made of plastic that wobbles all over the table when you type, by all means have at it. The LG is the inferior product here as is the Thunderbolt Display. The Studio display is a well made product that will last a long time and superior to the LG in a few ways.

I think if Steve Jobs would be alive we would never expect such a bad costumer expierence....or if it happen the whole Team can leave there Workplace.
When Steve Jobs was around that's WHEN the Apple practice of using early adopters/purchasers as guinea pigs started, back with going from Jaguar to Panther. And long before the update OS'es became free too. Anyone around then can confirm it wasn't until .5 - .6 or so of each OS were they remotely bug free and stable. And then it would start going downhill until the last iteration, in prep for the next OS.

A full fledge computer driving a monitor… I am now on the fence again when it comes to replacing my iMac in the next year or so

I always wonder how much Apple is investing in data centers. If they really want to be pivoting to services, they better build up infrastructures like crazy.

It's a display. Why does a display need a firmware upgrade?
Bought a Philips 23" WUXGA monitor in 2004. Great purchase. Never fails. No SW updates required. Only need to dust it off once in a while ... with a regular cloth :) .
Firmware updates are common across all electronics, but there’s much more at play here beyond firmware, a full computer

That's not really true.

The LG was the panel supplier for Apple for the 5K iMacs, utilizing the same panel for the LG display as the iMac. To address your comment above though, Phil Schiller actually went on stage to promote the LG 5K display. ie. It was part of the actual Apple event. Apple even went as far to say that it partnered with LG to design this product to work seamlessly with Macs. Furthermore, Apple has support documents specifically for the LG 5K display.

Unless it had an Apple logo, it’s not an Apple product. Partnerships to insure compatibility and a solution for customers is not the same as manufacturing & designing it. Also a common panel doesn’t make it the same product. A car can have the same engine as another car but be totally different.

Apparently the Apple Studio Display does not have the same panel as the LG UltraFine 5K. It is an LG 27in 5K panel but it is a newer engineering effort than the 5+ years old iMac 5K/Pro or UltraFine 5K panel. Confirmed to have a different product code and all.

It handles contrast better, it is significantly brighter in normal usage (besides the fact it is listed as 100nt brighter by Apple), and does not seem to have the LCD bleeding issues common in the UltraFine 5K. It is obviously not a significantly updated panel because it is still just an IPS at the end of the day but Apple w/ LG clearly refined the component based on real-world feedback of the UltraFine 5K.

We already knew it was a different panel, as it has different specs. It was a mistake for some to call it the same panel.

As you say, it's a similar panel that has been updated, but it's a different panel nonetheless.

Not surprised given my recent experiences upgrading Apple products. But why overcomplicate a monitor? It's pretty straightforward stuff.

On Apples part this has turned out to be a bad case of over engineering for simplicity sake. The XDR Display which cost 6,000 doesn’t need software updates, so I don’t see the point of it on this.

It’s not like they even added any true meaningful functionality like Face ID where having firmware updates would make sense. So far, most folks thoughts on Center stage is it’s an unnecessary gimmick and it doesn’t work quite well. If you are doing a meeting at home it could easily pan into areas you don’t want people to see.

This is what the SD update actually contained; it was just inefficiently part of a large, overall OS version.

Studio Display Firmware Update 15.4

  • Adds support for Boot Camp on Intel-based Mac computers
  • Minor stability improvements

The XDR has had several software/firmware updates.

I gotta admit, I really hate the… design philosophy of this screen. It's starting to look like an over-engineered mess.

I've got one coming in two weeks, and have been keeping a close eye on some other threads where people are discussing options for hooking up the display to everything else in the household… obviously many of us would be better served by a damned Dell 5k, but the market just doesn't give a fig.
