As an Australian, it's kind of funny to see people get excited about contactless payments or any kind.

Here, they are everywhere - in Taxis, cafes, on vending machines, even on parking meters. We have 23 Million people and 10 times the number of NFC terminals as the entire US. Even Amex is contactless here.

Swipe and Sign has been completely abolished for about 3 years. It's actually rare to find a business that doesn't have a contactless terminal.

What is taking you so long America?

Merchants and the banks.......

Honestly don't see why pulling out a $600 smartphone to pay is any easier than pulling out a plastic credit card. One thing's for sure - the credit card will suffer less potential damage if it's accidentally dropped in the process.

...adding, glad to see TJ's also accepts Google Wallet and isn't exclusively Apple Pay.

As someone who recently was a victim of my credit card getting skimmed and cloned. I appreciate the added security mobile payments have.

Oooo look at the screen, someone's making steak tonight!

Anyways now I can check out all the organic stuff in style

Looks like steak dinner for 2 with all the fixin's! Along with some 2 buck chuck... Ah romance, begotten with contactless payment.

It's great more stores are adding Apple Pay but who actually shops at Trader Joe's ?
We do. I never considered it "low priced" however. It was always a nice diversion from the majors who basically all sell the same stuff from the General Mills/Kraft/Heinz's etc of the world. Did you know that Fritos (PepsiCo) owns the Fritos, Doritos, and Tostitos brands? That's right, at many super markets they are the only corn chip product sold. Maybe you'll see the token Herr's or Utz here in the Philly area. So at least at Trader Joe's you get a little variety from those guys. Their coffee is good too.

Edit: Oh, and +1 on D4rkc4sm's observation. You'll know when you've made it when a new retailer accepting your form of payment is NOT news.

You're proving my point. They have a few products every now and again that are any good and you have to check for them? Not exactly a great experience. Their bananas are great if you like mushy $.19 bananas. Or you could spend a little extra and get something good, from a good source. All of the products your refer to can be had for a bit more and you can support a system that is ethically significantly better.

Maybe I've had a bit too much two buck chuck tonight and it's making me self righteous. :)

Huh? Read my post again, I only mentioned coffee when I said 'now and again', and I'm sorry, but mushy bananas seems like a problem with your Trader Joe's. I get them in the morning when they are literally bringing the bananas in to the store. They're slightly green so you know they are fresh.

What do you mean by 'ethically significantly better'? Also, I don't shop at Trader Joe's because they have the best prices, I shop there because they have good products. It also helps that it's 2 minute walk from my house. :D

I've done both, and I prefer the phone version.
I don't really like people touching my stuff/card, given the choice, let me give you this NFC thing.

If you can't/don't see it, then move on, not your problem.

Yeah. But a watch on my wrist is easier than a phone or a card.

----------

Of course, most credit cards indemnify against fraud so...

So it's inconvenient and having to tell all your recurring charges your new number etc

$100 over wireless payment? Isn't there some kind of limit in the US?

Here in the UK, all contactless payments are limited to £20 at a time. That's going up to £30 in September.

----------

Meanwhile in Australia it would be news if any store/stall/trading post DIDN'T offer contactless payments. Hurry up already!

Feels like that here in the UK too! I am so, so sick of Apple only releasing services in the US. I know it's not always their choosing, but they should hold these services until they can make them available in more countries on launch day.

We don't have Apple Pay here yet. So Americas beat us to it in this.

Good for you. Around here, we're still dealing with ancient non-encrypted magstripes and have rampant fraud problems as a result, and we're actually losing NFC acceptance -- remember the CVS debacle? They've got the terminals, but all that happens if you try to use them is you get an error message. They used to work! Same thing happened at Best Buy and Home Depot.

You would think merchants would jump on anything that decreases fraud as they're often the ones who have to eat the cost of fraudulent charges when the rightful owners of accounts file chargebacks when thieves use cloned cards to buy things. But -- nope. I still don't know why the store managers' bosses and/or the companies' shareholders aren't raising a huge fuss.

In So Cal their parking lots are always packed....so I would guess that lots of people shop there. I was there this afternoon. I know people who add it to their vacation destination stops if they don't live near one.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38348368/0425151645.jpg If the screen at Trader Joe's looks like that when your ready to pay, then its probably turned off. So people who's Trader Joe's has it enabled, does it look like this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CD9hLYvUEAA9B-i.jpg:large when your ready to tap? I did see a screen similar to the one minus the Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Contactless logo, and instead it said something like "Please swipe payment card at any time." in place of those three logos, but then it only showed the amount due thats it like in the first picture.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say this about Trader Joe's. Mediocre at decent prices has always been my experience. I have one 2 blocks from my apartment and shop there MAYBE once a month. Garbage produce and bland processed foods.

I strongly disagree with what you wrote. I am very critical when it comes to food, and I have been shopping at Trader Joe's for at least 20 years. I find their processed foods to be of very high quality. There is no account for taste, so you have to choose what you buy, just like in a restaurant. But by and large I find their foods tasty. Their meat is of really high quality, and while not all their produces are as good as places like Whole Foods and other high end grocery stores, their carrots (mixed colors) are great. Their lettuces are excellent. Compared to places like Safeway, their produces are much better.

Plus, if you try something and you don't like, bring back the receipt and tell them. They will refund you.

Also, they seem to have the happiest workers there, which make me think they treat their employees very well. I love shopping there.

I used to shop for groceries at many places, and I remembered I was always surprised by my Trader Joe's receipts: they always ended up being lower than I expected, by 15-20%.

Last week I was in the check out line when a Trader Joe's employee tapped me on my shoulder and asked me if he could trade my 4 year old worn out TJ insulated bag for a new one, a $19 value, at no cost to me. That I didn't expect. Mind your, this is not the cashier who asked, but an employee who walked around the store doing other things noticing that my bag was quite worn. Many other super market stores employees would be so tired and overworked that they don't have the time or energy to do that sort of thing, even if the store allows it.

I never get asked for a receipt when I return stuff (weeks or months later). They're totally cool about it all the time.

Trader Joe's pull off the idea that you don't need a lot of the same thing, just one good choice.

Not so simple. First, it's Aldi Süd, not "Sued". Trader Joe's and Aldi are very different in nearly every way, except a common owner. Their shopper demographic is diffferent, they don't operate in the same neighborhoods, they have very few products as crossover (Trader Joe's labeled products have no artificial anything, compared with Aldi which has artificials all over their products).

Aldi Nord/Süd are also separate companies, so "Aldi is using Trader Joe's as their brand in the US" is not correct, since they are so different. Since the money likely ends up in the same place anyway (Albrecht family trust), I'd say the strategy is to use Aldi/Trader Joe's to capture a wider audience of the USA grocery market than either could individually capture.

Actually, they are different owners. Both original owners died (brothers Albrecht - aka for Albrecht Discount - Aldi), but the divide is because both brothers divided the business.

And it is correct that Aldi Nord has to use an off-brand - in this case Trader Joe's - because Aldi Nord has no name right for the American market.

PS: If you would have read the posts, I used "ue" because I use an US keyboard and was too lazy to look up the ASCII code and since there is a German rule that in this case, I can use "ue" for "ü," I did. Please don't argue with me about German. I have a German High School diploma, one of my written test subjects was German. I am fairly versed in the German language - actually studied German (as part of my International Languages degree) and even taught it on college level.

I usually already have my phone in hand, especially if i'm only getting one thing.
