I think I’ve seen this a few times. Been getting random kernel panics while working in FCPX and also had a couple when QuickLooking files stored on my NAS.

I hope it’s related because a fix will likely be incoming.

I am having no issues with Catalina 10.15.4. Wakes up fine, sleeps fine, nothing. Even fixed a few things. However I don't copy large amounts of data. 15" MB Pro 2018.

10.15.4 has been a real **** show for me so far. 1Password can't fill in passwords on any browser, I've had to manually force-sign multiple apps to make them even open.

Yesterday I did something I haven't done in 15 years of using macOS, having used every major release and patch release. I've downgraded my MBA '13 to Mojave. It became unusable with Catalina. The process sucks, I'm still reinstalling and configuring stuff but I guess it's worth it. Since 10.15.4 it couldn't even wakeup without crashing, last week I got a full system freeze when I was just editing a document and this weekend I had a kernel panic. SSD is fine, I've ran memtest for hours, there nothing wrong with this Macbook. I've been running 10.15 since it came out and it's by far the worst macOS release ever. Lion and Yosemite were heaven compared to Catalina.
I honestly can't believe people are still upgrading to Catalina after all the hundreds of known problems that people have experienced with it.

This kernal panic bug was hitting me at least once a day on 10.15.2. IOkit. It went mostly away in 10.15.3 but back in 10.15.4 but it seems hitting more year users now. This won’t wait for 10.15.5, it needs update patch now

Every time I consider upgrading to an MBP 16, I realize that Catalina's instability + lack of legacy support just isn't worth it.

I really wish there was some kind of "macOS Classic" or "macOS Pro" that literally just takes 10.14.6 and snow leapords it for people that use macs for actual work and not stupid iOS-ported bloatware (news, books, music, etc)

They've completely changed the way the OS handles kernel extensions in 10.5.4 so it's screwing with a lot of things. They're completely reworking how the OS handles networking in the next OS as well, which is probably going to screw up more things.

This is very upsetting to me.

My Mac would to wake after it went to sleep without a hard restart (and eventually not at all), and when it did there seemed to be a problem where the cursor froze, then 2 minutes later the Mac shut itself down and restarted. This ALSO happened in SAFE mode! Repeatedly (like 20 times).

I had sent my new 16" MBP back to Apple 2 weeks ago for this issue. They replaced the logic board and sent it back. Then, 4 days later this issue occurred again, and again and again....it would not even stay on long enough to reinstall the system.

I sent it back to them and was told they could not reproduce the issue. They just sent it back to me - INTERESTINGLY, with it running 10.15.3, and NOT 10.15.4, which is what I told them I had the problem with after updating. No mention of it in the repair writeup either. Now, as of yesterday, I am running 10.15.4, but have not really challenged it with large file movements or other intensive apps. I think I will not until I see an update.

I am pissed off, as I am a professor and need my MBP to teach online now and it seems this is something they know about and are not addressing in writing to any of us. Plus it has cost me two weeks and I just found this thread, so I know I am not alone. Life is stressful enough for all of us now, and Apple should do better. Much better for the cost of these machines - I would love it if an extended warranty were offered, as I no longer trust it.

The last update hosed my SoftRaid Time Machine with 6TB of backups. Then it hosed my startup drive because my Work RAID couldn't load properly so I got nothing but beachballs. Thank goodness I use CCC to clone my startup every other day. So I'm now restoring back to the last macOS point release.

Coincidentally, one of the 4 drives in my Work RAID failed, and I can't swap it out until I complete this restore. I've lost a day and a half work so far.

Plus with this goddamned COVID virus I've lost 85% of my clients, at least until they can reopen (I design for restaurants and bars, primarily.)

16' user here...

I haven't noticed issues with large file transfers, however, mine crashes when I plugged in an external monitor via the USB-C and a third party USB-C dock. High fan speed and immediate crash. Working from home and using ViewSonic monitors, I've changed from the dock to two USB-C adapters and it seems to be working now. Chatted support and reported the issue. I would still not recommend updating to Catalina, more trouble than help.

MacBook Pro 16" - also experiencing crash when waking up from sleep (opening clamshell) :(

This happened to me last Friday, I thought it was my MacBook Pro, but thanks for the heads up.

I have a mid-2015 15" MacBook Pro, that is now using Catalina 10.15.4 without any issues, thank G-d. I did have an issue with Paperless but Mariner updated due an Apple bug.

Now, I'm an amateur, so this question may sound stupid, so apologies in advance, but when I updated to 10.15.4, I updated by downloading and installing the Combo Updater before the System Update had a chance to update automatically. Is this what everybody here did as well, or updated using the simple 10.15.4 updater?

I will add that I replaced by SSD in my machine from the 256 GB SSD original in it, to a 2.0 TB Samsung SSD when I first purchased the machine in 2018. I don't know if that had a protective effect.

My '18 Mini will freeze at times. I also have the smb issue were I cannot connect to my NAS after I've connected to it once. Annoying as hell.

What does Apple say... "It just works" (2007)

We have updated several Macs to 10.15.4 (1 laptop, 2 Minis and 1 Pro), zero problems.

MacOS has been in a pathetic state for a while now but worse thing is Craig Federighi always comes up and claims that he has 97% satisfaction rating from the survey. I wonder if this guy really cares about giving Mac users a solid OS or just keep cracking stupid jokes at WWDC and at other events. At times it's harder to swallow his ******** about the quality of Apple software these days...

It's been said one way , many times for the last 40 years : for production ready Systems , keep to the last shipping Build version of the previous OS version .

Using a state of the art OS for serious work is always risky .

I've taken a new habit of updating my mac OS to the next version when the version I'm currently using stops receiving security updates. So that means that I'll update from High Sierra 10.13.6 to Mojave 10.14.6 this fall. And at the end of next year I can skip Catalina (if its still bad) as 10.16 is complete by then. Only using fully ready and development-complete Mac OS versions (read: the last point release) makes me mostly bug free and content Mac user :)
