Running SwitchResX with my monitor set to Display Port 1.2 fixed the issues I was having on my Mac mini M1. Still working fine with 11.2.

I largely encounter this on a twice weekly basis. Screen goes wonky on the MBP screen, when connected to external secondary display. Restarting fixes this issue, but quite annoying. Overall having Bluetooth issues as well, but it's quite variable and acts to unpredictable (double key strokes etc..) this is with the Magic keyboard via bluetooth. I have MBP M1 as well.

On my Dell U2415 (HD monitor) connected to Caldigit TS3+ via DisplayPort and with Macbook Air M1, I had to disable Display Port 1.2 in monitor settings to make it work. It's not a big thing to me as I have only one monitor, but it must be deal breaker for anyone using more than one monitor. It works the same on 11.0.1 and 11.1. Will try upgrade to 11.2 over the weekend to see if there will be any change.
Monitor works with Display Port 1.2 setting on my old Macbook Pro 2013 and Catalina.
I usually upgrade to next macOS version one month before new one comes out (e.g. went from Mojave to Catalina only when 10.15.6. was released), but that's not an option yet with M1 macs.

I wonder if part of the problem is Apple don't support the full DisplayPort spec, in their software. For example, they don't support daisy chaining displays (Displayport MST). It is only a software and not a hardware issue as you can daisy chain displays fine in Windows (boot camp).

So I would love it if part of the fix is they finally support the full spec. As at the moment I am using all the ports on my MBP, to plug in 3 monitors. But if they support MST, I can get the thunderbolt HP G2 dock and only use 1 port.

Happened again last night. And again this morning.

My Mac mini isn't even sleeping but somehow it doesn't send a signal long enough to wake the display. The display wakes briefly (but with a black screen) and then goes back to sleep again. I then have to power the monitor off and on again. But then all my open windows have resized. I have to go in every time and adjust them.

This is getting ridiculous.

Agreed. Similar issues with me too. Def learned my lesson to never upgrade to the latest OS version until it's really ready for prime time.

It’s good to see this on the front page. Let’s get some visibility.

My Benq PD2720U drops to 1920 x 1080 when my MBP M1 wakes from sleep, but still tries to display my higher res desktop.

Turning the monitor off and on restores normality, so it’s an annoyance but it still shouldn’t be happening.
M1 MacBook Pro with Dell U2720QM exhibits the same behavior. I have to unplug and re-plug the display, sometimes several times, before it seems to lock in at the correct resolution. I filed a feedback in Feedback Assistant FB8968374. When I initially reported it stated no similar reports, but now seeing "more than 10".

Hello. Do you have a link to report this?

*** Found it.

Thank you Macrumors for writing this article! I am pretty patient and understand issues are possible with updates. What's frustrating to me is that #1 - it's been 52 days since 11.1 was released (12/14/21). #2 - all the threads and articles over the past 52 days have been related to Apple's commitment to fixing resolution issues on the new M1. My 2020 16" MacBook is less than 6 months old and Apple has pretty much said FU to anything not containing an M1 processor. This is an easy fix Apple......do NOT make us wait another 45 days for the fix. Issue a supplemental update now.

Some macOS Big Sur users who are running the 11.1 and recently released 11.2 update have been experiencing ongoing issues with external displays, based on multiple reports on the MacRumors forum, Apple Support Communities, Twitter, and Reddit.

macbook-pro-touch-bar-m1.jpg

There are at least two separate issues at play, but both are related to external display connections. The problems appear to have started with the macOS Big Sur 11.1 update, and the 11.2 update has not provided a fix and in some cases, has worsened the issue.

The first issue causes USB-C ports to fail to recognize external monitors, rendering external displays unusable and unable to connect. This appears to be affecting both DisplayPort and HDMI displays connected directly and through hubs and adapters.

We saw this issue firsthand after upgrading a MacBook Pro to macOS Big Sur 11.2, with the update preventing an external monitor from connecting with USB-C, and there are several other complaints from affected users. From Reddit:The second issue results in resolution issues with external displays unable to work at a full 4K 60Hz resolution, instead locked at 30Hz. In some cases, a 4K monitor is only recognized as a 1080p monitor.

It appears that many of those affected with display issues have a 16-inch MacBook Pro, but there are also reports of other Macs with the same connectivity problems. There does not appear to be a reliable, widespread and tested fix or workaround at this time.

Mac users did not experience these problems in the initial release of macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, and it appears that the macOS Big Sur 11.3 update released yesterday also does not address the problem, but there is still some time for Apple to work in a fix before the 11.3 software sees a public release.

I'm having many of these problems. Have a mini M1 hooked up to an LG 38WN95C-W monitor via thunderbolt. If i let the m1 go to sleep it crashes due to kernel panic. Switching to never sleep avoids that, but then I manually turn off monitor at night so it doesn't illuminate that side of the house. When I turn the monitor back on there's no signal from the m1, though it's still on and awake. I have to unplug the thunderbolt and replug to get the signal back. Same problems if I switch to HDMI to connect. Really irritating. Had hoped 11.2 would solve the issue, but if anything its worse now--the m1 has crashed twice since then even with sleep set to never.

11.2 on my M1 Mini with an Uptab USB-C to mini displayport for my 27" Cinema display now seems to work much better. Now when I power on the display and click the mouse it comes up, it rarely did that with 11.1.

Could this have anything to do with the displays or the adapters failure to support HDCP, which seems to kill any M1 based Mac and DVI adapters or cables?

Could be, these external display issues are nothing new though, I have had similar issues since Sierra with my 2016 MBP 13". It is clearly and exclusively a SW issue since under windows everything works as intended.

IMHO Apple will have to overhaul their display drivers/software completely in the near future because the issues just keep piling up. Not to mention their resource intensive scaling strategy which is completely bonkers compared to Linux and Windows.

I wanted to buy a M1 Mini as I already have two 27 4k displays but now I'm not so sure anymore.

I saw improved performance from my monitor by unchecking the HDR box under displays.

I spend 15-30 minutes every morning unplugging and plugging in my Macbook Pro 16inch to BenQ 4k 60hz Monitor via thunderbolt dock until it eventually recognizes full res @ 60hz.

It's mind-boggling that Apple not only released it to the public like this but hasn't fixed it in 2 software updates since.

I am having the same exact problem. We have a monitor in our photo studio (Eizo S2410W) and whenever I plug it in to my MacBook Pro (DVI on the monitor and USB-C on the MBP) the monitor turns on briefly and then goes black. Over and over again.

I have an external monitor I use at my desk which I plugin by HDMI converted to USB-C and that one works perfectly.

I had no issues on 11.1. What I see on my MBP M1, I can also see on my external monitor connected using a USB-C hub to HDMI (not a 4K TV but looks 4K to me when watching series on Apple TV+). However, the problem started after updating to 11.2. The quality is not that good anymore, probably downgraded to 1080p.

- Mac mini 2018

I had TONS of issues with Catalina and my monitors. HDMI was a joke. It finally worked fine the last two updates and everything was working well.

Because of that, I waited for 11.2 before jumping into Big Sur. I even saw HDMI repeated issues being fixed in the release notes (M1, I know) so I figured they had 2 updates to fix things, all should be well.

I upgraded to Big Sur and the next day started having the same issues. After sleep, I would lose my HDMI monitor. I'd have to shut down, unplug my other monitors and leave only the HDMI one, boot up, plug back in my other 2 on DP. That worked for a few days. Now everything is broken.

No matter what I do, I can only get one monitor working on DP. The HDMI monitor will not work at all. Some notes:
- The two monitors I have connected on DP are the same make & model. Only 1 will work. I can swap the cables and move the monitors to different USB-C ports and only the same monitor will work. So it's like an issue tied to a hardware ID or something preventing the other one from working at all.
- There's definitely a UCB-C issue. My main drive is an external SSD on USB-C. I also have issues rebooting where sometimes it doesn't see my drive, or I have to boot into recovery and pick target disk to get it to boot. Sometimes I reboot and all I get is the thunderbolt and USB logos on the screen
- HDMI is not working at all at this point, nothing I do helps.

This is by far the WORST update I've ever had on a Mac.

Exactly the same here. Quality of the display looks worse since I updated to 11.2 but the biggest issue is now the screen won’t wake up. Worked fine on 11.1 Not acceptable that Apple released the M1 in this state. Seriously thinking of returning and either buying another intel mac or a pc.

I have two mac M1: one has 11.1 and the other has 11.0. both use USB-c to displayport cables. 11.1 has an issue where screensaver just popup while the mac is being used and I can't get out of screensaver mode. I have to shut down and restart the mac. it happens a few times and it is frustrating. At first I thought it is caused by USB-c cable or Asus monitor. but I swap out cable/monitor with those from the second mini with 11.0, and the same issue happens with 11.1 mac. after seeing this article about 11.1/11.2 issue, I checked Mac os version of the mini that has issue and it has 11.1 and the second mini has 11.0.

Adding my two cents here. I use a CalDigit TS3 Plus running firmware 44.1 and I lose connection with my external monitor. Every time I need to disconnect the table from the Mac AND disconnect and reconnect the dock power. Very annoying...

Twice in 24 hours. Very annoying. Problem is unless enough people report or say this is an issue, it's unlikely to ever be fixed.
