That did the job for me.

After restarting, I had a sudden system reboot, after which I had to reconfigure the settings for the external display.

I'm curious to see how "permanent" this fix is, while we wait for Apple to provide a fix.

FWIW I also have an external USB-C dock to which I attach my external Time Machine disk through USB, the monitor is directly attached to a free USB-C port on the MBP.

I was hoping this would work for me but on a 2019 MacBookPro those preferences I could not even find. :(

I have had issues as well, especially since 11.2.1 came forth. I have a 27" LG 4K Display coupled to a 2020 16" MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM + 8GB of AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics that was custom-ordered with the machine. Each were bought last year, and I had no problems with either at that time. However, since 11.2.1 came out, whenever the Display was hooked into the Mac, both the Mac's screen and the LG screen would begin a bad case of screen flickering, then go black and green almost immediately, rendering the usability of the LG Display as useless within minutes. It also would force the laptop to either perform a hard shut down, or it would restart itself. I've tried every cable that I have (all of which are brand new), with no success. I've also reset the PRAM and SMC, along with the other myriad of "solutions" that are out here (such as restarting the computer, perform Disk Utility (everything checked out OK in there), changing the cursor size in the Accessibility area of System Preferences, adjusting resolution to 1080p instead of 4K, even getting rid of the CleanMyMac X Program, as I found out that the Mac already does all those tasks in the background for you; unplugging the power source of the monitor, then plugging it in after about 10-15 seconds, AFTER the screen flickering occurs, and STILL no success. However, when the monitor is NOT hooked up to the Mac, the laptop functions normally, with no issues (which is how I'm writing this post right now). Also, Sidecar for the iPad Pro works with no issues, even when I use the iPad as a secondary display, both wirelessly and connected directly to the Mac. Also, the LG monitor is currently hooked up to the iPad Pro, mirroring its screen, with no issues whatsoever....

Another interesting tidbit: I attempted to connect the Mac via AirPlay (wirelessly) to the Apple TV, and after a few seconds of activity, the Mac automatically performed a hard shut down of itself, with the fans cutting on at a high rate for about a second before the shutdown occurred....

It seems like this issue is especially prevalent at higher resolutions than 1080p, as I did change the Display settings to "Default for Display" on the 4K monitor itself, but the issue is still present, although this flickering didn't happen until a mere 30 minutes or so later, which is still unacceptable.... I feel like it's something in the code of 11.1 or 11.2 that is blocking the ability of the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M chip and the Mac from communicating with each other, as I didn't have this problem at all when on Catalina, or even on 11.0.1.

I will admit: Even on Catalina, I'd be looking at the display, and for whatever reason, only the 4K Display would just go black for about a second, then come back on, and this would happen about every 30 minutes or so (still don't know why that was the case to this day)..... As the updates progressed, this issue of the screen going black became more common, especially while using Big Sur. I'm honestly thinking about downgrading back to either 11.0.1 or even Catalina just so I can at least continue to get usage out of my monitor, which definitely is of help to my overall workflow on the Mac.....

Question: Is anyone else out here having these same issues??? If so, please say something!!! The more attention, the better, and the more that Apple will turn its HUGE EYE (Lord of the Rings speak; LOL) towards this problem of getting these displays to work correctly in Big Sur. Besides, this is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE, given the fact that there are a LOT of us out here that have spent thousands of dollars of hard-earned money on these machines, only to not be able to connect a display to them for presentation or professional purposes. This should be a number one priority of Apple to make sure that these basic functions "simply work" with no issues....

macOS 11.3 Beta 2 fixed my external monitor issues i had with my 16" MacBook Pro. My external LG 4K Monitors are working again with 4k@60Hz. Nice!
That's good news.... I sincerely hope that others (including myself) will also see that issue fixed as well in the newest update!!

I have 2018 Macbook Pro connected to LG 38uc99-w via DP.
After 11.2.1 update, it was working and suddenly it stopped working when waking from sleep.
Did a reset in LG monitor settings and it detected it back. Give it a try. It might work for you.

Can confirm it's not limited to MacBooks.

Mac mini (2018)
3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7
32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Upgraded to 11.2 this morning and the 2nd LG monitor is not getting a signal. Tried unplugging/ swapping cables, powering off/on, restarting, putting to sleep/ wake-up (which actually caused both monitors to stay in sleep mode)

Filed a bug on apple.com :(
Try setting the display to DisplayPort 1.2 instead of 1.4 within display settings. This did help with my LG 4K

Same issues here. My 60” samsung tv wont recognize my m1 MBA. It did after a few tries, but then the tv turned almost solid green and has not been able to connect since. Via HDMI and hyper 8 in 1 dock. Same setup works with my PC.

Ran into this issue today with my LG 4K monitor connected to my Mac Mini via USB C to DisplayPort cable. Switching ports cleared it up but something tells me this isn’t a permanent solution and the problem will rear its ugly head again.

I just realized today that My MBA M1 wont even mirror to my 60” samsung tv. I tried to mirror a movie today and was let down. Tv just acted like nothing was plugged in even though my mac was changing its resolution back and forth.

Used my PC and called it quits!

UPDATE: After opening the laptop this past Saturday, the computer inadvertently did THREE hard shut downs on its own.... I'm thinking it was because it was connected to the Display (again, it's an LG 27" 4K; not even a year old!); otherwise, it was working just fine. So, after doing extensive chatting with both Best Buy and Apple, the Apple representative said I could perform the Shift-Option-P-R key commands when restarting the computer to reset it to the operating system that I had on it when I bought it, which was Catalina (back in September of last year). SO: I did that very thing, installing Catalina on here, then when I hooked a display to the laptop, it did the exact same thing again, where the display showed both a black screen on the laptop, and a green screen on the display, followed by persistent screen flickering, hence making the laptop unusable....

So, now I know it's not Catalina. Not sure if Big Sur has made it worse. I also know it's not the Display itself, as I currently have it hooked in as a "mirror" toward the iPad Pro, and it's been working just fine.... PRAM and SMC resets didn't fix the problem, nor the disconnecting of the power source of the Display, then hooking it back in, as well as restarting the computer, shutting it down, then turning it back on, and SO much more....

In the meantime, the laptop is updated back to Big Sur (11.2.1), and the laptop is functioning normally because I haven't hooked it to a display at all since the upgrade. I now have no choice but to set an appointment with Apple to allow them to diagnose the problem. EtreCheck still displays everything just fine in the machine; however, I think the root problem must be either a) the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics chip, or a connection within the laptop that connects to the graphic chip that is causing this persistent issue....

I haven't had this problem for about two weeks now and I somehow thought it had cured itself - don't know how but anyway.

However, this morning, the display wouldn't wake again. This is some small improvement in the frequency of the problem but I don't think it's solved. It could start happening daily again. There is no pattern to it or way of trying to diagnose it.

I wish Apple would acknowledge this problem at least.

There is one sure-fire fix for this ridiculous problem for now: in battery settings under "plugged in", check "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the screen is off". The downside is your Mac is never sleeping, which is ok but not ideal for power saving, but at least the display wakes every single time in my experience. Apple better fix this problem ASAP because there are millions of us who work from home and use external monitors and would like them to wake from sleep when we're about to start working.

This hasn't worked for me in the two months since I bought it. I enabled this option right back when it first started. I have my Mac set to never sleep but the display frequently will not wake.

Strange...works consistently for me. I'm using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable that runs from my MBP to my Asus monitor.

I'm on a Mac Mini. Maybe there is some difference with how the two machines look at display port output. I've no idea what causes it. It's the only problem I've ever had with it. I never suffered from any BT issues on the M1 in the same way others did.

I've seen a few people comment in various places that 11.3 may fix the problem. It's in beta now so I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Not sure if this is related, but I have a 2016 MB Pro and a 2019 iMac. Running 11.3 beta 2, just picked up the LG 24" 4K TB3 monitor. Note, I don't try to plug both systems into the LG Monitor at the same time. With the MB Pro, i can plug in the LG and it works perfectly For my 2019 iMac, I can only get the monitor to work if it is connected when it boots. if i disconnect it and try to reconnect it later, it does not display anything. Tried direct connect and with without daisy chaining of TB devices. Not sure if this is related to this problem or not, but it is not working as expected with 11.3

My mac now connects to my TV via HDMI with the OEM digital AV adapter. Did not detect my TV with the Hyper Drive 7 in 2 hub

A couple days with the 11.2.2 update and my Asus monitor wakes up from sleep now. Cautiously optimistic the problem has been fixed. Will update if not.

It’s good to see this on the front page. Let’s get some visibility.

My Benq PD2720U drops to 1920 x 1080 when my MBP M1 wakes from sleep, but still tries to display my higher res desktop.

Turning the monitor off and on restores normality, so it’s an annoyance but it still shouldn’t be happening.
I found same this issue after updated macOS 11.2.2 with my Dell u2720q (4K monitor with usb-c)

2015 iMac 5K core i5 user here. My OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock suddenly stopped working and I thought the dock itself had expired. I did a series of tests to check the Thunderbolt Dock with other computers and it seems to be fine. I only know now in retrospect that my computer probably had just installed macOS 11.2 when the problems appeared. Hoping for a fix soon.

Okay. So I restarted my iMac in Thunderbolt Target Disk mode and it was bootable on another Thunderbolt equipped Mac. I then restarted my iMac in macOS 10.14 Mojave and the Thunderbolt Dock worked. I then restarted into macOS 10.15 Catalina and the Thunderbolt Dock still worked. I finally restarted once more into macOS 11.2 Big Sur expecting the Thunderbolt Dock (and external monitor) to still be dead, but to my surprise, everything seems to be running well now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
