Happened to me yesterday. Posted it in Twitter also. Had to change my password and login again on everything in the house. Sometimes I hate Apple.
I’m guessing Apple detected irregular activity on the affected accounts. Long time ago I used a password across websites including Apple. That password was compromised on another site and apple forced me to reset. From that point on, I use a unique hard password for Apple and 2FA. Too much is at stake.

I wonder if this is specific to people on a certain device. I.e. it occurred to all new iPhone XS Max users or something along those lines. I’m on iPhone XS (verizon) and 2018 IPP.
Our's happened on a MacBook Air 2014 & an iPhone 6S

When I got my new iPhone Xs, I couldn't sign into my iCloud with my current password even though it worked on all my other devices. I had to come up with a new password and reset all

Happened to me as well. I have no sources, nor any proof....however, this small batch may be a test run of a new internal tool they have to force a mass reset in the event of a breach.
This has QA and Dev written all over it. Small batch, textbook no warning, random assignment, no announcement after the fact.

This is "just" a minor annoyance, I have to verify 2 gmail accounts each and every ffing day, I can understand 1 of those accounts needing to verify, my girl lives in Asia while I am in Europe and the both of us use that account, but the other one is mine and as I said before, verifying needs to be done on a daily basis, I am about to kick Google out once and for all.
I'm hoping we find out the reason. It's ********.

By the way, I had this problem for several months in a row about three months ago and I called and raised Hell. I forget what I changed while on the phone with them--I think it was my AppleID/Email. That ended up fixing it.

No one in my family has been hit, but a few weeks ago my teen daughter's friend had it happen to her while at our house. Nothing like trying to provide tech support for a teenager who really has no idea how to talk "tech" and won't stop clicking on random stuff while you're trying to walk her through resetting her password. I'm pretty sure by the time she was done she'd created two completely new Apple IDs, reset her password four times, and somehow managed to book a cruise to Alaska on her father's credit card.

I saw on Reddit that no one with a mac.com Apple ID had the problem. Is this really limited to newer Apple users?

Yep, here’s another with two accounts that needed PW reset. Both accounts used non-Apple email ID. My iCloud.com account/s had no issues.

Annoying! What if I was overseas and can’t easily do the verification?

What a mess. Got a prompt on my mac and while in recovery I supplied my number and got the code then it asked for my phone code which I provided, and now it was my credit card which I don't possess anymore. It wants me to wait for 24hrs for another recovery method.

So pleased I left tech support at Apple before this happened! Pissed off people were already too much for the job description and pay.

You are up for some extra bad news for account recovery mate. Might take you a good 2 weeks to get back into it. Try to use Find my iphone app from a device you have signed into in the past to speed things up.

Happened to me today. iMessage was not working and shortly after asked me to reset the password.

Happened to my father too. And he got scared that someone is trying to hack him and phish the new password he is entering...

People really should get more information when their account gets locked like this...

I agree. I was concerned I was being phished at first until I heard my wife complain about having to do this.....and the other 4 people on our family account.

Happened to me this morning. I had to create a new password and then login to 12 different Apple devices - and then confirm each with Apples 2FA on each.

While this was a PITA what really ticks me off is Apples silence as to what the cause of this LockedOut / Reset fiasco was. Where’s the transparency as to the root cause of this massive reset?
