Have absolutely had this issue. I was shocked. I usually finished the day with about 50% left on my 12 mini. After updating, I've been getting down to 0% with the same use! My poor mini, it already struggles enough with battery life lol

EDIT: I also experienced the unexpected heating issue while doing basic tasks like looking at email.

Exactly the same. Battery life on my Pro Max had been outstanding until iOS 14.6, and I have also noticed that heating issue but not only on Mail, using other apps too.
Same here on iPhone 11 Pro. Battery drain and heat issues (noticed it while browsing safari but probably happens in other apps too)

Seems to be hit or miss if you're going to get it, but definitely seems to be out there.

Complex software development and unintended consequences of changes - will always happen. Some folks were pointing the finger at the podcast / music software but who knows. Definitely need a patch though.

Unintended consequences happen, but Apple has less excuse than any other manufacturer for issues like this because they control every aspect of hardware and software development and implementation.

Isn’t quality control supposed to be the reason for Apple’s vertical control of its products and the appeal to consumers?

Persistent issues fundamental to the basic operation of the device is simply unacceptable.

My 11 still says it’s calibrating the battery and capacity dropped from 98 to 96:confused: how long do I have to wait?

I was in love with my 11 Pro's battery life until 14 happened. It's been consistently terrible ever since (and I did a clean install), currently it sits at 86% and it just barely makes it through the day. It gets very hot occasionally too, especially while charging. Audio streaming via BT is draining it faster than you can say "hey Siri" too, which didn't use to happen before! Some users claim "Find My" takes up excessive power, but it doesn't even show up in my list. Very, very disappointed.

Weird, my iPhone X lasts just the same. Maybe Facebook or something is upping their game on stealing data

The previous update showed high Exposure Notifications activity (over 50% if I remember correctly).

I disabled/reenabled it: its usage lowered to normal level, not the battery drain.

Now, with the last update, on top of battery usage app shows App Store (27%). Battery drain as usual.

So, either my iPhone X suddenly and coincidentally lost its battery capacity just after the update or iOS is doing something wrong under the hood.

Considering that many users are experiencing the same, I guess it's the latter. :)

That said, I don't doubt that you and others aren't affected.

Following the release of iOS and iPadOS 14.6 last week, some users have taken to social media and online forums to note that their devices have been experiencing excessive battery drain since installing the software updates.

The Apple Support Community and MacRumors forums are riddled with posts from users stating their device now drains faster following the update. One user on the Apple support forums notes their experience with their iPhone 11 Pro and Apple Smart Cover draining faster than normal following the update:
It is worth noting that many factors contribute to a device's battery life, including its battery health. Users with degraded batteries can expect shorter battery life. According to the forums, however, the issue seems to be impacting all devices, regardless of specific battery health.

On the MacRumors forums, one user notes that their iPhone 12 Pro not only drained faster than normal but also began to overheat while simply browsing Safari. An accompanying post recalls a similar experience with an iPhone 12 mini:
With iOS 14.5, Apple introduced a new battery health recalibration feature for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The new feature allows the system to recalibrate the battery health of the device in order to address possibly inaccurate battery health readings. Following the update released last month, users have noticed that their iPhone 11 battery health has changed following the recalibration process.

After any iOS update, users can expect normal battery drain in the days following due to the system reindexing Spotlight and conducting other housekeeping tasks. However, iOS 14.6 was released more than a week ago, and users continue to note the battery drain on their devices. If the issue is indeed software related, Apple may decide to address it in a subsequent update to iOS 14.6 or provide a patch in iOS 14.7, currently in beta testing.

I’m getting this too with my phone SE 2. Battery used to get down to 15% by the end of the day, now it’s dead by 7:00 if I don’t recharge.

A lot of times I think it’s rogue settings. While annoying a full reset and restore of the phone typically solves these little niggling problems.

My iPhone 12 Pro now runs down at night from 100% to ~25%. It has shown App Store, Music, Translate and Siri running on the battery check. I have turned off any cellular and background activity for these and most apps. In addition I have done the power down and force reset. No luck. This did not occur before 14.5.

I'm going to say Apple either don't listen to beta testers (reporting issues with software updates impacting batteries) or they don't care. this issue of battery drain happens every time a new update of iOS is put out there. honestly I have to think if an iPhone is the right product for me going forwards...... you shouldn't need to have a phone constantly on charge.

Mine has been decent. No complaints. Only issue has been in app crashes, and random freezing.

This is why I keep as few apps running as possible when I use my iPhone 12. I haven't seen major battery drain issue myself (but then, I have chargers at home, in my car and at work).

I’m betting MR just copies/pastes this story after every iOS update, changing the version number of course, to watch the anecdotal “evidence” get posted. 😜
Except they don’t, and I haven’t experienced this with every update.

Some strange things from the battery usage tracker:

over the last 10 days, app store has used 10%! of battery despite being on screen an average of 1 minute per day.

This indicates a leak in the App Update feature that runs in the background.
