Luxury watches work decades and usually gain value.
That's a bold statement. In recent years, sports Rolex watches have been going up in price.

However, if you bought a ladies' Omega or IWC in 2005, it definitely did not keep its value till today.

If someone thinks that apple watch with a hermes band and watch faces is luxury, then im quite shocked.

For me, luxury is in the eye of the beholder. I consider the Hermes Apple Watch to be a luxury item. I consider something to be a luxury item if it’s craftsmanship and materials are luxurious to me. The leather bands are certainly luxurious, the stainless steal is luxurious, and Hermes watch faces are beautiful and luxurious.

Luxury has nothing to do with being a designer brand or not. Designer brands aren’t always luxurious and non-designer brands aren’t always not luxurious. I have $700 to $900 handbags that are of higher quality and craftsmanship than some of my more expensive designer handbags. I would consider them more luxurious than some of those more expensive designer bags.

Luxury is personal and one person may find something luxurious that others don’t, and that’s okay.

What is the difference between a luxury watch and an apple watch? Apple watch looses it value and functions over the time. Luxury watches work decades and usually gain value.

The difference between a luxury watch like Hermes or Chanel watches and an Apple Watch is they are not smart watches and the Apple Watch is. That’s comparing apples to oranges. Of course the Apple Watch loses its value and functions over time because technology is always advancing. Those other watches aren’t reliant on technology to keep them relevant and maintain their value, the Apple Watch is. Big difference.

It’s also a generalization to say all luxury watches keep their value. That is not true with all luxury items. There are serious handbag collectors that won’t buy certain bags because they won’t keep or increase in value. In fact, MOST luxury items lose value over time, and very few actually hold or increase in value over time, which is why serious luxury collectors spend countless hours doing analysis and research before purchasing their items. The only ones that care about luxury keeping or increasing in value are those that view these items as investments and want a return on their investment, or in the least to be able to resell and get most or all of what they paid back.

Im sorry, but im talking about real luxury watches - not a brand making over priced so called luxury watches. Garment makers making a watch bought from switzerland isnt a luxury watch. It is tacky watch for people who only buy brands they know or heard.

There are also real luxury watch brands making smart watches.

Sure, they are the same price, alittle lower or sometimes higher… But what is the value of the apple watch after a few years? zero, or you must pay that someone take care of that e-waste.

The exclusive Hermès watch faces are pretty cool as well.

Edit: also, all Edition Apple Watches come with a two-year warranty, rather than just one year. Combined with AppleCare+, you get three years of coverage.

In theory.
I've spent last 10 weeks with AppleCare department in Europe, Ireland.
Hundreds of calls, chats, mails, Genius in Apple Store, the last sentence they told me was: "the plans you bought aren't guarantee will work if you use it".
"What?! If I broke my Ceramic Watches and SS watch for that I've payed every months you don't repair them?"
"No, not necessary, I think your plans will be disapproved when you'll use it".
That's all.
AppleCare department is in drugs trip or it's a scam, nothing else.
"It's not me, it's the system", "I've make everything I can do, but my supervisor doesn't approve", "I'm thinking you are right, but I can't do anything".
These are the answers of Applecare's department.
One of my watches wait the 60 days rule to be warranted, they told me NOT to buy the plan 'cause they will sell me a single payment plan also if the 60 days rule was passed by 5 days. The day after: "wait other 5 days", "wait other 3 days", "sorry, I can't sell it to you".
I know many of these kind of people, they're ever scammers, someone best know in jail.
Now are working in AppleCare department.

Apple will accept old devices for recycling, even when they have $0 value, so no, you don't have to pay someone to "take care of it."

I don’t care what the value is after a few years. I can use my Hermes bands on future watches. I’ll likely keep this watch for 2 years so the cost amounts to a few dollars a day. To me, that is worth it to have something I really enjoy and am going to use all day every single day.

Apple takes any old product back for recycling even if it’s worthless, so we won’t have to find anyone to take care of it for us.

It’s not for you to say what is luxury for all, only what is luxury for you. Luxury is different for everyone. For me the Hermes Apple Watch is worth it or I wouldn’t have bought it. I love it. If you don’t find value in it then you won’t buy it. To each their own.

Yea, for someone walmart is a luxury grocery store instead of small stores… So it is not me saying what is luxury for everyone - you can certainly feel that apple watch is a luxury gadget for you. But most of us, using real luxury watches, dont even think that apple watch is nothing else than a replacable gadget.

That’s fair. I’d rather have designer bags than designer shoes, watches or clothes, for example. It’s all down to preference and I’d rather have a Hermes Apple Watch than even a Rolex because it can do so much more, even though no one can deny how amazing Rolex is.

Wow, what a lively discussion ?

The only thing I'm sure about, is that the notion of luxury and necessity are subjective and therefore specific to each individual. There isn't one "right" or "wrong" answer, just different ways of valuing things. Whether a Hermes is "worth it" or not, is therefore a personal choice or decision.

To my own motivation: I got a (second-hand) Hermes Apple Watch because simply said, I wanted to experience the Hermes watches perks (i.e. the exclusive watch faces and the band(s) - but at a cheaper cost. ? I really love those watch faces, they go with everything and look so classy. So I'll be keeping my Hermes watch, because I enjoy having it on my wrist. I don't care if people notice or not, as long as I am happy with it, it's what counts. I'll probably splurge on a couple of Hermes bands for it, too. But I think it also looks very nice with classic buckle Apple leather bands and that makes me happy, too.

Once my S6 is completely outdated, I'll buy a new one, while of course keeping the beautiful bands. ?

If I could buy shoes like the ones described in this story:
it would be totally worth it, even if the cost was 10-20 times what I would normally pay for shoes.

I don't know if I would consider such shoes luxury items, it seems like they are for everyday wear, and probably wouldn't look any different from regular shoes on the outside. But the custom fit and lasting durability are things that would totally make value for me.

Well said. But this issue is bigger than just ”luxury”. It extends to brand fanatacism in general.

People who say that Hermes Apple Watches ”aren’t luxury watches” are speaking from ignorance. Or they just don’t run in circles where it’s relevant. Because I’ve personally been acquainted to many who match their bands to their various bags. And if you’re rocking a $10,000 bag, a $500 Hermes leather band is a drop in the bucket.

I know that the cost of the Hermes Apple Watch is really for the leather band but it was actually the exclusive faces that made me buy an Hermes Series 7 Apple Watch. Now that the screen is always on I cared more what the face looked like. I don’t really care about luxury but the Hermes watch faces are my favorite. I finally broke down and bought one.

It’s not really relevant in a lot of peoples circles as it’s quite a niche brand. It’s a high end brand but not one that is widely desired in my experience. So perhaps ignorance plays a part in it too? The type of unintentional ignorance that is. I know if I were to ask some people I know if they’ve heard of Hermes, I’m sure a parcel delivery company would be a common answer here lol. I think the brand would be lost on most people and perhaps that’s why Hermes AW owners enjoy it so much. It’s obscure enough to be classy and discreet.

I first became aware of Hermes when I heard people talking about their scarves. As I wasn't that interested in scarves I never bothered to find out more about them, until Apple Watch Hermes came out, at which point I visited their stores to see the watch. And that is when I saw their horse saddle. Now, that's luxury, lol.

It is well-known in Europe, though. They are especially known for their silk scarves, called "le carré Hermès" (the Hermès square) and that alone is very well-known at least in french-speaking Europe. Growing up, I remember my mom getting a carré Hermès for her birthday and my dad had Hermès cuffs for his better shirts. Small things, not overly expensive compared to many other items (the Birkin bag at well over $10'000 ?) but one normal folks can enjoy with small(er) things. The Hermès Apple Watch is one of these.

Well I am from Europe and have lived here all my life and am aware of it, but it’s not a massively advertised brand I would say. It’s not a brand I see my friends and family going crazy over and think it’s all about different tastes. My mum has a Hermes scarf which is where my knowledge of it came from. It’s a niche designer brand that will appeal to a certain amount of people and others probably won’t care too much. The Hermes Apple Watch is a great device for those into the brand and for many of us it’s probably devoid of any appeal due to its higher price and lack of interest in Hermes as a brand. That’s why it’s nice to have choice in the line up

Agreed. It's not much advertised. And yes, I got to know it too thanks to my mum and her scarf. ? I'd say it's a classical, quite old brand - I guess it was more widely known back in the sixties/seventies when our parents were young. Hermès appealed to me because it means a trip down memory lane, it reminds me of my (now-deceased) mum. So wearing my Apple Watch Hermes I realize it's a bit of a tribute to her. I guess there is also this kind of thing that factors into the choice of something we buy or not.

IMO, the watch faces are what really set the Hermès model apart from the other AW models.
Of course the leather band is nice, but it’s the combination that makes it ‘sing’.

While SS or Titanium models are certainly nice, they are stuck with pretty bland watch faces.
Apple could provide some more tasteful and classy watch faces for ‘the rest of us’, but that would undermine and compete against the Hermès model.

I’m with you! I actually appreciate the watch faces more than the bands.

But the leather bands are handcrafted by the “artisans“ in France right alongside the Hermes bags. They are made from the same leather stock. And like the bags, Hermes refuses to automate the process and the production is limited to what their artisans can produce by hand.

So when a leather color or combination goes out of production, it’s gone forever. That’s why the Hermes leather bands can actually appreciate, just like the bags or watches, even after they are used.

And as I mentioned earlier, Hermes has been making expensive watch bands long before the Apple Watch ever existed. Hermes owners have been matching watch bands to bags for decades. The Hermes Apple Watch came about because they realized that the their bag owners were switching to Apple watches. The price is a simple result of too much demand and too little supply.

I do get the appeal of the Hermes faces, they are very nice and classy. However, my experience with the Nike faces tell me that I wouldn't actually use them much. I have had two Nike watches, and I did like the aesthetics of the exclusive Nike faces. However, the faces I end up using the most are the Infograph and Modular faces, the ones that can be loaded with the most complications. I guess because for me, the watch is more of an activity tracker than a timepiece. Last time I upgraded, I ended up getting a non-Nike watch, because I decided I'd rather try the new solo band rather than keep the Nike watch faces, and I haven't regretted my decision. And while it would be nice to have access to the Hermes faces, since it's not something I'd use that often, for me, it doesn't justify the extra cost.

No argument here on the Hermes leather bands. They're just out of my price range.

The Nike and Info faces perfectly fine for their intended uses. And, the watch has pivoted from initially being a fashion first jewelry item to now primarily a fitness and health device. So even those who have spent upwards of $800 USD on a titanium or stainless steel model are relegated to California as the only kind of 'classy' watch face.

Personally, I don't see myself ever wearing an AW in a formal setting. Perhaps with a casual jacket or blazer, and in those instances, I'd rather have a few more tasteful watch face options. ?
