I honestly debated whether to post my experience here. I knew that I would get hammered if I did, yet I also know that if someone else had this experience, I would want to know the additional details. BTW I did google Pats real name and it came up on Apples web site.

what else was in the settings menu.. can you recall some more?

I was in the settings menu for about 10 seconds... long enough to scroll down to the bottom, look at all of the icons on the left, push one of them to see how the next screen looks with the selection of options and settings. The only real surprise was finding the orange Cingular icon near the bottom of the screen. I would have thought that it would be the blue and white AT&T logo. There was also a squarish red icon with a letter of the alphabet in it in white. I forget what the letter was though. Overall I found more lines in the option list than I expected. What I saw looks well laid-out and easy to use. All of the buttons that I saw were large enough to easily touch to select.

This absolutely is a marketing move. I think the information is accurate though. I think this is Apple's way of releasing information of the device without actually doing any official press releases. Hearing the info in this manner is much more exciting and adds to the the mystery and the allure of the phone.

I am sure there are some people on this board who were on the fence about buying the phone but have decided to get it after reading this post.

I myself read this and now feel better about the durability of the phone and the performance of the EDGE. So this "leak" served its purpose. :)

Apple, if you read this - can you have a "hooligan" break into your offices and "steal" an iPhone and post pictures of it here on MR? :D

Why wouldn't anyone believe this.

At this point, 8 days before the launch and after the youTube announcement, I don't see anything to hide in terms of features. They've already been plastered on Apples Web Site.

Normally you would want to hide early user experience, much like the AT&T article (not loud or clear enough initially), but at this point, they've been built, boxed and shipped. Not much is going to change from now until launch.

Nice little review BTW. I'm sure there's a bunch of little ditties that are hiding in the User Interface. This has pointed out some of them. Editing on a touch screen has always been a PITA, looks like they came up with a nice way of solving that issue.

I'm looking forward to the launch. I might actually buy one!

If this is a marketing move, then they got me, hook, line and sinker. I was never on the fence, though. At least since Jan. 9th. I will be a very early adopter (day 1) and I feel even better about my decision after my brief use of the phone. It really changes everything in the communications-meets-media market.

rule#1: never use your real name in any online forum.

(rule #2: never talk about fight club)

you may want to pm a moderator to see if you can get your name changed to something more anonymous before this gets out of hand. :)

Kind of hard to put the cat back in the bag on this one.

I think the anecdote is interesting and believable.

Wildly off-topic, but my force of habit move (googling obvious names) took me to an interesting place - your article on "Wine in Space," and it was really quite interesting (what I could read without being a Wine Spectator subscriber). A really cool concept if it comes to fruition.

As regards the story, the details seem to indicate authenticity but we'll know for sure come the launch eh :)?

Did that reddish icon with the letter in it happen to look like this?

I was kind of hoping to hear from Nasa after writing that one. Never did.

Nice review, and I fully believe his review - seems legit, and a very enticing review at that!

Let me ask you a question: I know this may be hard, but if you had to select one feature off the iPhone - yes, just one - that you were most impressed by, what would it be and why? :)

The interface... the interface just draws you in. My thought was that there was no way they could actually make this thing work as buttery smooth, seamless and intuitively as they did. No way. They did, however. All of the animations just glide past so you feel like you are being transported without any cheesy, overdone glitter. For my tastes it seems like just enough eye candy without realizing that the eye candy is there. It just works the way you think. Certainly not the case with my Treo which has tiny buttons and very little in the way of an enticing user experience.

In the second one you can see the guy using it.

*leans in closer to examine the picture*

I can't tell that is an iPhone - maybe it is, but there aren't any visible signs to me that that really is in fact an iPhone that he's using. For all I know he could be holding a piece of metal in his hands. :p

I'm just not seeing how that is an iPhone - maybe someone could enlighten me.

what is this though, the 3rd or 4th story of a waitor playing with an iphone in a restaurant... its almost as bad as the "my uncles brother-in-law works for att and said..." im not trying to attack you, you may be telling the truth, but doesnt anyone else think its weird that iphones are only being spotted in restaurants? other than the one on the train, nothing else has been heard.. i wish someone had the balls to just run up to someone with an iphone and take a hi-res close picture and run away!! lol.. as if the people with the phone are gonna chase you down and make you delete the pic... :D

Or you could just go up to them politely and ask to take a picture of their iPhone (or a couple). Then, if that plan doesn't work, execute plan B, which is to blatantly take several pictures of their iPhone before running off. :)
