I thought Apple testers would be in California.

So, this undercuts the credibility of the claim.

Are you guys serious? There are these things called 'aaaiiirrrplanes' that can take people from out of their state an into others. They are pretty fancy I might add.

haha, yea. Did you think they would ONLY test it in one state? That would make zero sense. So I would expect it to be in just about every state in the US for testing.

I would also hope testers are taking these things off US soil and roaming with them to see how well they perform. Wouldn't do you any good to have great service with AT&T and then come to Canada and discover the service sucks with Rogers.

Well, more than it usually does, anyway

I just hope "Pat" isn't mad at you, although you are not a journalist or a blogger, you've certainly made your findings public...

i saw an iphone last night but it didn't have the white paper sticker on it. I didn't get to personally use it but the owner showed me email, safari, and you tube

Why would Apple testers be testing the iPhone out in Nevada?

I really do not know why. Pat said that it was a get-away, but it seems strange to me that Pat was alone on a get-away. Maybe they are testing the iPhone in major markets and in different environments. The restaurant is fairly loud and generally has no service with Sprint. Any service I get while at work is usually roaming. I did notice that the iPhone appeared to have a full set of bars in our environment.

To Pat's credit, Pat was keeping it hidden behind the tablecloth, until I came along. I apologized for the interruption, but explained that I would love to see the phone. Pat asked me to sit down and offered it for me to try out. The rest is what you read above.

Just take it for what it's worth, people. What, if it's fake you want to burn him at the stake or something? It's not like this wine director is gaining anything from this. If it's real, it's great insight to the amazing product we will all get to play with in 8 days. If it's fake, we will have forgotten all about this story the second we get our hands on the iPhone next Friday. All he is claiming is that he got to use an iPhone - not that he saw Jesus or something.

Thanks for the first hand account. I hope to see more of these. I don't think dude just took the time to make up some BS story. He checks out as actually working at a higher end place and I wouldn't be surprised to see someone there testing one out. These iPhone guys have probably worked their asses off for the past year and are finally able to take a vacation. Good for them and thanks again for the story.

Who cares if some random guy got to touch an actual iPhone or not? In 8 days hundreds of thousands of people will get to touch one and the internet's cup shall overfloweth with first hand impressions.

Ahhhhhh.... 8 days...

I work at a fine dining French/ Italian restaurant. If I asked a customer to check out their phone, I would probably get fired. It's a general rule that you don't interrupt tables over something that isn't necessary. If he would have been the waiter for the table and was talking with them and they showed a sign of not being annoyed, then you could give it a shot (maybe). But a manager or wine director should never do this, nor should someone not directly involved with waiting on the table. I call BS. Even if it is real, who really cares, it will be available to the rest of us in just a few days.

People are spotting the phones in restaurants because people are sitting there waiting for their food and have one the hottest device coming out. Yes, they are going to take it out play with it.

Besides internet reasoning isn't going prove or disprove the validity of any post.

I believe you. :)
100 is quite alot and the chances of the one the millions of apple fans seeing one is high.
I mean if they didnt test it outside of the apple headquareters how stupid would that be.
If only apple testers tested the new imacs at wine restauraunts in las vegas, how cool would that be.

When do us people in the UK get to see one. Will it go on tour like the Wii and rolls royces do?

Where to find an iPhone on June 29th

I can't afford to buy one of these babies, but I know where I'm going to see one -- my local Starbucks! I mean, where else would you go after buying one? Home? I don't think so...

The statement that Pat first asked was if he was either a blogger or a reporter should indicate that Pat's stipulations from Apple/SJ allowed the iPhone to be shown/demoed (to non-bloggers/non-reporters, etc) in public. Pat most likely had permission to talk about it, and let him have some hands-on time with the device. What's not kosher (aside from the personal interruption of his client's meal) is that he is in fact a blogger, evidenced by his posting about it afterwards...

... not that I can say I blame him, though. ;)

Nice review. Did you see Madonna with her iPhone at DelMonico's that night as well?

Soooo...

As a tech marketing guy, I've got a decent (though not infallible) sense for what's a real write-up, and what's either patently false, or astroturfing.

though our friend was more than a little incautious with his account name, the write-up has a ring of truth to it. It sounds like what I would write under similar circumstances - highlights, a couple points of note for items that have been major points of discussion (edge, interface), and a couple bits nobody's seen yet.

My personal bet is that 100% of the content of this report proves accurate.

I'm a bit of a fanboy on the topic of the iPhone, but I'm also a bit on the edge - I've got a Treo 680 that's working very well indeed, syncs with my office calendar and contacts smoothly, but is a total kludge of a design, and irritates me a half-dozen times a day with lousy behavior, mostly in the interface.

Moving to iPhone is certainly going to break some things that are working well, but I'd give just about anything to have a phone that I don't mentally groan a half-dozen times every time I try to do something.

I've been thinking, though, that it's amazing how little we've seen of the phone - we haven't seen it do calendaring, alarms, texting, punctuation on the keyboard, entering web addresses, and... and.. and...

It's amazing how attractive it seems to be, with so little information - question is, are all these hidden bits amazingly well done, or clunky interruptions in the sweet bits we've seen. This report seems to address at least some of that, so I'm grateful.

Thanks, and while I've been to Ruth's, Morton's, Prime, Craftsteak, Smith & Wollensky, but Delmonico's is just about the best I've ever had. I made a very declasse' mini-sub out of your breadsticks and house-smoked pepperoni, tomatoes and mozzerella from the antipasto plate. Yummy.

Now back to your original topic. iPhone lust and doubts.

As detailed and exciting as his story is... I'm not quite believing it yet. However it is very convincing. His description of the iPhone alone made me want one even more. Marketing or not, he's a good writer.

i find it odd how that his account was created on the forums just after this topic was started. It might be a good choice of forum name, knowing that someone might google the name.
Thats not to say i dont believe the story. But im not sure about the magnifying glass though. That doesnt seem very apple IMO.
But heh, everyones entitled to an opinion.

Maybe they are testing the iPhone in major markets and in different environments.

That would make sense. From what I have read in a number of places, AT&T and Apple are really testing this product hard in a wide range of locations, and AT&T has been beefing up its hardware in order to improve EDGE performance in a number of places.

Las Vegas is an obvious testing location, as lots of iPod/hip/early iPhone people probably make frequent trips there. I also suspect that Las Vegas has a lot of EM noise that would make wireless communications somewhat challenging.
