it's amazing how some people think that just because they are not doing/using something, other people shouldn't be doing/using it as well

i think it's pretty cool ;)

this

(Also, interesting reading reactions of a predominantly Apple-oriented group of people on something game console-related, hehes).

There was an app almost exactly like this for Xbox and I had it. I didn't use it, but I never play my Xbox anyway.

I'll probably use this. It'd be awesome if it had the ability to let you control your PS3, but oh well. Sometimes I just want to play with someone so I'll check who's online at that time, so this'll be handy for me and save me turning on my PS3 if my iPod is already on. Same goes for the news and blog, I usually check IGN all the time for new PS3 games anyway. I'm pleased, and I'll use it alot I think.

If only they'd make it a bluetooth keyboard.. I hate typing with a controller. :(
Hopefully they will update this with new features in the future. The Xbox app I had had an update that let you add friends, so here's hoping Sony will copy and add features too. :D

I imagine that the PS3 is going to get an itunes app soon too. You won't be able to access the itunes music, but you will be able to check your Ping Profile. :D

Seems very lame; but it's obvious some folks here do care about the same stuff I see as pointless. :D Must be cuz I'm old...

Westside old timer, I'm with you. Sometimes you gotta break out the cane and beat some sense into these whipper snappers because this cr-app ain't worth a plug nickle.

What is your point besides suggesting that people are not entitled to an opinion?

Opinions are like arseholes (*******s for you Americans) everybody's got one.

I don't recall telling anyone that they couldn't have an opinion. Oh wait... Is that what you're telling me? That I can't have one.

So.... what's your point?

Are you telling me that my criticism of the absurdly stupid attitudes being vented, which I find quite amusing, along with the massively self centred complaints that it's not being released in America (and thus deserves derision) when I have yet to see an American give a rat's arse (ass) about the rest of the world when something gets released, is itself an illegitimate opinion?

Oh come on... Quit pounding your keyboard just for the sake of it.

It appears to be of limited value, however it legitimizes and recognizes iOS, and has Sony thinking about iOS and setting up resources to look after iOS stuff. You don't see Apple putting out an app for PSP or PS3, or doing anything that acknowledges Sony or the PSN. What we have here is Sony coming to Apple, cap in hand, saying "may I?". Which tickles me. As with most first versions, it will probably evolve over time to become more useful. Facebook 1.0 for iOS was not especially useful either, nor was the Google app (and to this day is still mostly comprised of a collection of browser links); comparing it to existing, evolved apps isn't particularly fair.

Having said that, I have no interest in it whatsoever. Don't own a Sony game unit of any variety, don't use PSN, don't care to.

Despite all the whining in this thread about how "useless" this app will be, I am looking forward to it. Sounds good to me.

AT LAST !!!!

Frickin Awesome addition to the App Store !!!

Hater Trolls need not reply

In other news, all of this can be done from your computer. I hate when companies release apps with no reason to actually download it. Why would I want to check on the "status" of my PSN friends when I'm not playing my PS3? If I'm not earning trophies, why the hell would I want to check on my current ones? Jesus, this is just pointless.

I use the iTrophies app to check my PSN friends online status when I'm not on my PS3. Very useful to know if someone is online to me. Don't assume that something is "pointless" to all just b/c you have no need for it.

Firstly, why are people who do not have a PS3 coming on here and calling the app lame. Stop trolling againt Sony.

I (as an owner of a PS3) think this is useful to see if someone is online, but that is all. I would like to see it updated to include a remote, but that will not happen. Sony sell remotes as accessories. To give away a free app wouldn't make good business sense. And before fanboys call this a rip off, just think about who you are a fanboy of and how much they rip everyone off

So if you read in a newspaper or blog about a films launch date, or watch/read an interview with an actor, do you count that as advertising?
Do you think the App Store is solely a giant advertisement too?

If the blog is run by the company releasing the movie/game of course it is advertising. It's not a balanced review, that's for sure. You would never see Sony give one of it's game one or two stars or, would you?

App Store: No it's one of the founding pillars of our society... Of course it's an ad! The App Store's one single function is to advertise and sell apps!

I agree. Not worth much.

This doesnt let you control the PS3 via wifi? Useless to me. Sorry. I dont care about trophies or news announcements on an app. Lame.

PS3 and Mac working together can be a beautiful thing--Medialink, for example. I would like to see more connections. But viewing badges I won playing Unchartered 2 or 3 on my iPhone just doesn't do much for me.

WTF? This sounds like a stupid app! Now, if they had used the Bluetooth on iPhone or iPod Touch and made a PS3 remote control app or even a controller app I would have even considered buying it for $1.99.

This was what I expected. This would have been great!

Yeah, who cares? Check trophies? It's a friggin custom website on my iphone/pad. SFW? This is news?

Now let me stream video to(and from) the PS3 ala airplay, remote control the PS3, you know DO cool stuff then I'll be interested.

It already does that via industry standards, DLNA

Ah I see. You are bitter about others disparaging remarks about your opinions and just giving it back. I thought you were a corporate cheer leader telling people their opinions are not worth anything next to those of a CEO.

Look, you have to ignore people trying to get you riled up by telling you your concerns are pointless because the US is all that matters. It is a game to entertain the simple minded and you play into their hands by getting worked up about it.

You asked what my point is. It is that people can have opinions and express them and it doesn't matter if a corporation gives a damn or not.

How about using it as a input device for ps3. I hate using the controller to enter information and chat. Rather then connect a keyboard we should be able to use the phone as a keyboard a la appleTV and iphone/touch.

Sony today announced that it is preparing to launch an official PlayStation application for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app will be free and will only be available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands in its first iteration.

The app will offer the following features:

The app will require iOS 4 or higher. A version for the Android OS will also be released. Sony's entry into the iOS App Market is interesting given the increasing competition between Sony and Apple in the mobile gaming space. Earlier this year, Sony produced ads specifically dismissing iOS/smart phone games.

Playstation Official Magazine frequently did (I haven't read in a while) give out low ratings. The blog has also been quite brutally honest in the past.

I don't think you're versed enough in this topic to discuss it.
