Sony does not understand that everyone carries around a cell phone.
So if your cell phone can do more it will slowly get you to stop using other devices, even if those devices may be better at gaming, or taking pictures, etc.

I dont carry my camera as much, camcorder, just about never.
I never carried around a portable game system, ever.

and I forgot to mention, the kid has to use his crappy flip phone to make the call while the other guy just used his gaming device to answer a call.
and what is a kid using a cell phone on a school bus for?

Buy some content Apple!! You need to compete here. Content is king (as they say). You can't just rely on bedroom gaming companies, you need some high end polish to compete.

Seriously?

Just a couple of examples. I have a hard time calling EA and Activision bedroom companies, maybe your definition is different than mine. Just for fun I will throw in a couple of old ID games. Also interesting that ID chose to Demo their latest game on iPhone and not the PSP....

The quality of gaming on my PSP trumps that of my phone without a doubt. I'm just not one to "game" on something that's intended for browsing the internet and calling people. I love both devices to death, but for gaming, I always opt for my PSP. Just my thoughts.

I don't really like gaming on the iPhone, no buttons makes for a rubbish platforming experience...that said, I would enjoy paying $10 for a game I'm gonna play for 2 minutes even less.

So I got a OpenPandora...done deal. :)

You're clearly in the ever-shrinking minority

As soon as Sony release a PSP with Dual analogue sticks then we should see a reverse in mobile gaming. iP4 is an ok platform but its mainly a little bit of fun on the go. Aint really a lot of great games on there. I like FPS and there isnt a single good game on the 4 thats worth buying.

There is no denying that the iP4 is a better gaming platform at the moment but the whole App store is 99% FOS as opposed to anything great.

I kind of agree with this. It's too hard to play some traditional games like FPS or hack and slash with touch screen controllers/tilting/gyro.

I wouldn't have gone with this strategy.

Nintendo is being smart in creating a system, the 3DS, that has very clear unique selling points as compared to the iPhone/iPod Touch. Apple isn't likely to follow them. It's a similar move to how they created a market space with the Wii.

Sony is going the other way in trying to compete directly with a platform that is on the up. They will not win this fight. The PSP may well be a superior gaming machine but no one ever seriously claimed it wasn't. What the iPhone offers is very good gaming, certainly 'good enough', at a low price built in to a system which is smaller and more portable with exceptional media playing and web browsing capabilities. The proposition has more value to it overall. Unless Sony can offer something of value that clearly seperates the PSP from the iPhone, rather than dragging the two closer together, then they will struggle.

I wondered how Sony would respond to Apple - their recent history didn't fill me with hope. They find themselves now trapped between three serious competitors accross the living room and mobile space and it's hard to see how they will win in either of them over the long term.

Where in the ad does it say iPhone? From what I could tell it was simply a comparison of iPod Touch vs. PSP.

I think the part where he answered the phone call was a dead giveaway it was a phone, and not an iPod.

lol

Even if it wasn't an iPhone for sure, you couldn't even say that it was an iPod Touch for sure, either... lol!!

I agree content is a big one, Apple needs to get the big game developers on board.

Also I think that the lack of physical buttons on the iPhone/iPad is holding the platform back since there is only so much control with touch and axis. Apple should really come out with an add-on accessory with some physical game buttons (D-Pad, analog sticks, rumble etc) you can plug iPhone/iPad into.

That ad is ghetto to the extreme for a big, well established company like Sony. Even Microsoft's ads aren't this hood. :p

We all love our iPhones' and I wouldn't trade my for a PSP ANYDAY, however...

Touche sony. (As far as the message of the commercial goes.)

I don't play handheld gaming systems like that and it's only natural that we attack the commercial... but you gotta admit...

Ive hated every single iphone game Ive played, and Ive played most of the "best" ones. The controls ruin it, the only playable games are the ones that are too simple to be engaging for more than a couple minutes.

I still cant believe they released GTA on it, what a disaster.

Portable game machines are for kids on a long card ride (or like this kid, bus ride). I like iPhone games because, while simpler, you can get on and get off as you need to -- doing BIG BOY stuff: standing in line in any number of situations.

Big Boys play XBox 360 or PS3. They do so on a 60" HDTV with surround sound cranked to the max.

(BTW -- loved that kid in IMAGINE THAT with Eddie Murphy.)

this commercial reinforces what I've been telling people who ask for my opinion when looking at the iphone/ipod touch vs nintendo DS/PSP :

the future is with Apple for gaming unless the others smarten up real quick. Today's society is all about convenience. We don't as much about graphics (even then, the iPhone graphics are great and they'll only get better).

It's about being able to click a button and dload a game for a $1. much easier to justify that to a parent then $10 or MORE, says a kid :)

We bought our kids iPod Touches recently. We take long drives to see family so we felt that was better than a new DVD player. So glad we did.

They love all the free games and the ones I've paid for. They think it's fantastic. It's smaller than a DS or PSP and you don't have to carry around games.

Unless those other boys release their own device with dloadable games, they'll need special screen protectors for their devices to protect from all the dust which will no doubt be in their face from Apple.

Sony also did 2 things with this commercial:
1. just marketed Apple as a competitor
2. showed that they are scared.

I would be.

The iPhone 4 beats the PSP in every way. You don't have to carry game disks with you, You have one piece of hardware for playing games AND texting your grandma, the iPhone 4 has better specs all around, and it has a faster web browser. You can also do countless other things on an iPhone that a PSP could only dream of doing. Also, how many kids do you see carrying around an iPhone compared to the number of kids with a PSP?

Yeah, then I have to buy and carry around another piece of hardware, plus all the games are 20 to 30 times too expensive.

There's quite a bit of difference in game quality. The iPhone may be capable for more, but for the most part its casual gaming. You don't see the AAA titles you see on the PSP. I would pay $20-40 for higher quality iPhone games.

Have Mac vs PC ads proved that Windows is a great OS/computer?

Those ads proved that Windows was an Apple competitor. Windows was a competitor because it's everywhere. Thus, those ads proved that Windows was everywhere.

These ads prove that Apple is a Sony competitor. It's a Sony competitor because people are starting to think of iPods as gaming devices. So this ad proves that iPods are credible gaming devices.

So, no, your conclusion is wrong.

Exactly. It's a software item which you play while waiting for a meeting, waiting for an interview, when you have a stray 2 or 3 minutes inconveniently opening in pressing matters.

I'd rather Sony talked about how good their machine is at displaying documents, creating documents, browsing the web, etc.... oh.... nevermind.

Sony is still caught in a market it excelled at 20 years ago. The world has changed and they haven't been changing with it as fast a Apple. Sony is a great company, but they fail in their marketing of their cutting-edge tech just as often as not. This is one such piece of typical Sony-tech.
