Dude, this comment is hilarious. You've got to be kidding. You realize the massive irony of your statement right?

And anyone who thinks any of these tech companies are benevolent entities are fooling themselves. It's war out there.

Hehe, especially in light of the recent app store purge... I think the real reason the macbook pro update is being delayed is that steve jobs insists on a mandatory porn filter built into the hardware, plus automatic censoring and deletion of your photo libraries.

No, seriously, enlighten us to this perceived irony ? I know of only one monopolist that was convicted of abusing their position in the OS market to push proprietary technology in an effort to lock an open medium to their own platform.

Unless you're talking about Unix fragmentation of the early 90s, late 80s ? Of course, ANSI+Posix pretty much made sure all those different systems still were pretty much source compatible. Heck, Unix fragmentation ain't much better today (especially because of the GNU stuff out there) and no one is the wiser.

Don't mistake competition with monopoly abuse.

Why? What does a "UNIX system" allow you to do that Windows does not, unless you're a terminal addict?

Seriously, what can you not do?

It's not programming.

Actually, yes, I *am* a terminal addict. OSX has native Ruby, Python and Perl support, for one. I do mostly Java, which is pretty darn portable, but I have fewer issues than my colleagues which use Windows, for whatever reason whenever it comes to Apache, Postgres, etc. Grep, awk, sed, pipes. All those wonderful GNU apps in MacPorts that I use all the time like Meld. Yes, I know you can use cygwin, but like most people who are unices persons, cygwin feels anything but complete to me. I've tried using Windows for these purposes, but it just never feels right or works as seamlessly as I like. Go to a software engineer's convention. You'll see more Macs than anything else.

So what are you doing on "UNIX systems" that is special to that platform for home use?

I'm not a home user, nor an average one :)

Apple is far from Mr. Nice On DRM, but thing like WGA have been the source of infinite problems. Why isn't there nice native ISO support? And encrypted sparse bundles rock my world.

Oh, and the Registry offends my very soul. I just hate it.

Apple is guilty, yes. The iPhone is a great example of lock in and stifling. That said, one my favorite Snow Leopard features is being able to use Mail instead of Entourage...

You have not owned this version of the z as its only up for pre-order, so quit bsing. The MBA is a piece of trash when compared to the Z, the thing can barely run 1080p video and even with its limited cpu power it gets crappy battery life.

Go buy the most recent model Sony Z and most recent MacBook Air that's available in the stores now....

Try each of them for a month ... *then* add some positive info to this thread, until then your smart assed remarks help no one and only reveal your immaturity ....

Has anyone else noticed that this has the same major downside that the original Unibody MacBook had? No FireWire. For $4500, you could almost buy the 2.8GHz 15" MBP, which outspecs it in every way apart from i7 & Blu-Ray.

I love Sony VAIOS. Their build quality is always a breath of fresh air compared to creaky, flimsy HP and Acer notebooks. Plus design-wise they're easy to look at too!

I'm considering saving for a high-end VAIO so I can erase my MBP's Windows 7 partition. Windows can obviously run on a Mac, but it doesn't feel quite at home. I'd much rather get a dedicated PC for the times I need to run Windows software.

Uh, with 2.8CPU, 8GB RAM and the 256GB SSD, the 15" comes to a stellar $950 less. Personally I'll never order the latter two upgrades from Sony OR Apple; I'll save a bundle and order from Newegg, thanks. (And hopefully recoup a little by hocking the 2x2GB)

To be fair though, the Z switch is pretty great, and an improvement of the current software switching the uMBP's have as they need a restart. The Z doesn't seem to need that, just flip the switch. Pretty hot admittedly.

I agree with you that the switch is an advantage and not a disadvantage. The lack of rebooting makes it even better which Apple cannot say the same for their current MBP line. I highly doubt Apple will add a switch at the time of refresh which leads me to believe Optimus is probably going to be used.

Apple used to triumph with their hardware and software over competitors.

Now look at them, ever since switching to intel they have come up with small innovations which gives them the edge over competitors in all fronts BUT the specs. As nice as a large multitouch trackpad and quality of build is, the reason we spend money towards a machine is how well it performs; up until now Apple has been playing catchup seeing that specs-wise, they're not going to be drastically different from say the new Sony we're all eyeballing. If OS X did happen to run on that Vaio, then its obvious the Sony is more value per performance. At least battery life is what's getting Apple over the line but they must need to come out with something possibly extraordinary to distinugish itself from being yet another 'me-too Arrandale' that happens to run nicer software.

I mean USD dude, got the figure from this site - Highest spec Vaio Z (Signature Collection) starts at $4,499 USD - link

I'm guessing a hefty amount of the $4500 price tag is due to the "Signature Collection" bit, dual SSD and blu-ray drive.

The Vaio Z outspecs it in practically every way. Superior CPU, superior graphics, superior screen, option for SSD drives, far better implementation of switching hybrid graphics, and it's 2 pounds lighter.

Why do some of you guys care so much about USB 3.0? It's not like there are an abundance of products that use that technology as of yet.

I usually own a computer for 3-5 years, I know you can't "future proof" a laptop but I would like it to be as close to it as possible.

Are you waiting for Light Peak instead?

Eidorian, I don't even know what Light Peak is? :D. I just don't NEED the latest and greatest technology and most people here don't either, they just WANT it.

I'm sure the people that bought USB 1.1 Macs enjoyed it much more.

In all honesty I was expecting the typical Light Peak knee jerk reaction. I had to make sure.

Do you remember how much USB 1.1 sucked when USB 2.0 got going?

Buying a computer now without USB 3.0, especially one you plan to keep for two or three years, is going to set you up for that same kind of suck.

USB 3.0 peripherals are shipping right now. It's downright foolish to think that they won't be everywhere within two years.

What exactly is stifling about the iPhone ? With all the innovation going on in the cellphone market, you'd be hard pressed to find any stifling there... And where's the lock-in ? Which data can only be accessed by the iPhone ?

And which court in which case declared Apple guilty... of what exactly ?

No, seriously, try again.

That thing is insane... a work of art, an engineering wonder, how they could fit so much into such a small thing is unbelievable to me... I mean 1 GB of dedicated graphic memory? We might see that on the air in about 30 years...

Insane, specs, insane form factor... to bad it sells an at an insanely high price, and runs an insanely unimpressive windows 7.

EDIT: Just checked this thing out on youtube and I must say it really looks identical to the MBP/MBA, it has a lot of similar external features. This video speaks for itself, obviously, the internals are superior, but this guy looks like hes selling a uMBP, they even have the unibody keyboard enclosure thing...

so they copied apple's "passion" for their own products..?? besides, it's not like apple invented the process of manufacturing a laptop enclosure out of aluminium...
