I find the popularity of the black components a little telling. Every Watch I've seen has been black and the demand for black apparently caught Apple off guard. Suggests to me maybe people generally are not yet ready to display these things quite as as proudly as the models in the ads.

Ridiculous.

There's no such thing as "peeepul." That's a generality, and therefore characteristically false.

I wear my Apple Watch Sport 42 daily, display it proudly with its silver aluminum finish and bright green band, and I get a lot of compliments.

It's a great product!

Add me to the list of people who'd have gone space black if this was available at launch...

I have a feeling this points to Apple Watch 2 being only a refresh of internals (and definitely no case changes which would alter the band connection) if it even exists; perhaps another refresh of band and case material options is all that's on the horizon right now.

They can reduce the thickness of the AW by about 1/3 and/or change the shape of the AW, without effecting the band connection design. Looking at other Apple products, I would expect the main thing to change in the physical design, if anything, to be the "thinness".

This isn't my experience. Sure i have seen a lot of black watches being worn, but i have also seen just as many in other colours. I have seen one edition, and a few hermes as well.

I have seen just as many SS watches as anything else, so definitely not seeing more black in my travels.

This. If the Watch 2 only features improvements under the hood and a slight design change (thinner, cuz Apple) I don't think many would be disappointed. In fact, I think many would be very pleased. Co-worker loves his watch except for the slowness.

My prediction is that the version 2 watch will included:

* 10% thinner (any more and it would impact the crown too much)
* slightly faster
* same battery life
* new material / color for the body
* new band designs
* new watch faces (watch faces in App Store would be nice)
* enhancements to some built in apps

IT LOOKS SO NICE....
space-black-milanese-loop-band-800x284.jpg

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO DO THIS RIGHT AFTER I BOUGHT A MILANESE LOOP FOR MY SPACE GREY SPORT!!!

Can you not send it back and wait to see if it does become official?

Trade in/installment plan:
  1. Hopefully Apple will offer some trade in or installment plan similar to the iPhone upgrade program.
  2. This would especially make sense if they are doing a yearly or 1.5 yearly upgrade cycle.

I like your thinking I really do! I don't think they would do this though if I'm honest.

Do you think anyone could possibly notice? Enough to actually say something?

Think back to everyone you saw just yesterday. Were any of them wearing watch bands made of different materials than the watch case? Can you even remember if any of them were wearing watches? Colors of watches/bands? Of all the people you saw yesterday, how many are you able to recall in enough detail that you could notice a clash of materials at that level of detail? Did everyone's nail polish match their outfits? Were the fabrics people were wearing clashing? Etc.

I think of the classic MASH episode where Hawkeye bets he can go nude around the camp and nobody would notice. And he does for a while. Or the classic scene in American Psycho that is basically a business card (quality) contest...

I really doubt that your world is in tune with such fine details of what you are wearing that they would notice a clash of 2 shiny metals in your watch. But, even if someone might recoil at such a clash, is that really someone with which you want to associate anyway? Enjoy life. Who cares what such a person might think.

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, doesn't think, notices, or doesn't notice. It's up to the owner to decide, as he/she will be living with the choice.

I like the Milanese Loop, as well as its unique functionality. But I own the Sport 42 in silver. I think the stainless would indeed clash, and I wouldn't want to live with that. The sport plastic bands are fine—and less expensive.

To each his own. Personally, I find the concept of "clashing" to require someone else to notice, akin to hearing the tree that falls in the forest making- or not making- a sound. Can anything clash if no one else notices? Again, it makes me think of the Hawkeye nude experiment in MASH- until anyone did notice, did it matter that he was parading around sans clothes? Apparently he didn't care himself, so his nudity did not "clash" with the accepted norms of attire in the camp... until someone did notice and then he covered up. IMO, the same goes here: I don't know if the concept of clashing really applies unless there is someone to notice and thus judge us. If no one can notice, can anything actually clash?

But again, to each his own. Self-judgement does exist... even to a fault for some people. For those who judge themselves harshly enough to notice the difference between SS and aluminum shiny silver, I hope Apple makes a matching (materials) shiny silver version for them too.

I have a space black but would probably not buy this. May get a black leather strap instead.

ooooooh! so exciting, I can understand they removed it quickly from the webpage (irony)
These small apple watch product tweaks feels more and more like the emperors new clothes IMO

It will be pricey to be sure, but I think it will be better then the knock offs found on amazon and ebay. I have one of those knock offs and its good, but its only 30 dollars good, so hopefully the apple one will feel more substantial. If its like the regular milanese loop band then I have nothing to worry about :)

As long as they keep the Hermes around for future generations, I'll be happy with the Apple Watch. It is still the best looking, IMO (including the Edition).

My DLC was scratched and rubbed off within the first few weeks. I was at the Apple Store this weekend to actually get a replacement via Warranty....I can say I am looking forward to the Loop in black as it was down to that in Stainless Steel or the Space Black link (I went with black)

That's weird, my space black watch & link bracelet (received in early June) look new once I wipe it down with a soft cloth. I'm definitely impressed with the durability. I know there were a few watches initially that had a poor adhesion of the DLC coating but heard it was solved after the first few batches.

Apple never has and never will offer a trade-in program for any product (meaning, turn in your old product and get a discount off the new one). The Watch will be no different. Even Apple's own recycling program run by a third party, would pay a "fair market value", which could easily be increased by selling on eBay instead, and the refund was in the form of an Apple gift card which I don't think could even be used to buy a new iPhone.

What I find most surprising about this, is that it comes from people who claim to love the Watch, yet they feel entitled to a trade-in program, which suggests they are not truly happy with the watch, and feel cheated by the price they paid for what they got.

The only possible caveat I see here is an Edition upgrade path, because those customers have paid more for their watch than anybody else, for any other Apple product in the last 20 years, and doing so might actually be a marketing strategy to sell another $10-17K watch to the same customer. And this is because there's at least $1,000 worth of gold in the watch, not to mention the ridiculous profit margin they made on it, which makes it worth Apple's time to recycle it; unlike any other watch. This would make little sense for a $249 (sale price) Sport, or even a stainless.

I suppose Apple could offer a payment program like the Apple iPhone upgrade program, but that just means you'll be overpaying for an already overpriced product and locked into a perpetual upgrade program. For the average consumer, it means they'll be making monthly watch payments! I understand how Apple can offer such a program on their largest selling product, which more than offsets the administrative costs, but I'd be stunned if the Watch could justify such a program at this point, except again, maybe for the Edition.

Huh? So if you recycle your old phone or watch and get a gift card which I'm sure you can use to pay for a new phone or watch, how is this not the same as a trade-in? Sure, you can get more money on eBay for your old device but that's just the same as buying a new car and either trading in to avoid hassle or selling the old car privately.

For example, I've got an old iPhone 5 sitting beside me which Apple will give me £80 to recycle or I can get between £120 to £140 on eBay minus fees and ignoring risk of getting ripped off. I haven't decided which to choose yet but I'm leaning towards just recycling and avoiding the hassle.

Oh and by the way you can do the recycling in the Apple store if you prefer - you don't have to do it via the third party you mentioned.

With these recent Apple Watch releases, it's making me think that either the Watch 2 won't come out anytime soon, or it will have the same current design making so it's compatible with the current bands.

I can see them releasing a Watch 2 that's much faster and with built in GPS (and maybe camera) and that being it for the technology side of things.

I think you're saying I'm wrong because all generalisations are wrong. I like that.

Anyway, I mean no slight to your proudly displayed aluminium and green Watch. You go ahead and continue with that. I'm just raising the suspicion that elevated sales of black watches and straps suggests a widespread desire to wear the device discreetly, or to be fashion-neutral with it, which suggest maybe its skewing more towards tehnology enthusiasts for the moment. That's all, nothing dramatic or offense-worthy.
