Scrap? No. The Watch will be sent back to Apple for a refurbish process to replace the indicated issue you mentioned with the speaker, the casing will be replaced due to your knife tests and then used as a replacement device for warranty.

Apple replaces all screens, cases and batteries no matter what when they refurbish an item. The only things they re-use are the internals; SOC, RAM, haptic module etc.

You mentioned the word "Scrap", as if they would literally destroy it. It wasn't clear what you meant. I was indicating your faulty speaker and intentionally damaged casing as previously listed to be replaced.

I meant what I "tested" on was going to be scrapped anyway (Apple always replaces the casing no matter if mint condition or damaged), not the whole thing, my bad.

Still slightly concerned how scratch resistant the Space Black is after my tests though...
I've had it with the link band for a year, now. I'm pretty rough with it, generally bump or scrap it a few times daily. Watch body itself is fine, link band -- I have a few worn links, but, it's not like it rubbed all the black off, and shows shiny stainless steel, it's still got some of that coating or patina. All in all, looks good, and is NOT something I'd spend time worrrying about (and, I'm picky about things like watches).

Hope that helps allay your fear somewhat...

Thanks for your feedback! I'm not worried either as it's a watch at the end of the day, just wanted to post my findings for others, but got shot down in the process. lol

No one "Shot" you down. I think others were questioning your "Scratch Tests" and your reasoning behind it. In any case, it's your property and you can do so as you wish.

Well yeah, some were questioning my morals which is a little uncalled for as none of you actually know me or my life. You were all questioning if it was DLC, I got that information for you and then when my faulty watch was going back anyway, I thought I'd do a little scratch test and give you guys my findings. Nothing untoward or anything like that, just testing the coating Apple said was DLC. I too was curious why Apple removed all reference of DLC from their site, perhaps it wasn't as strong as they first said and that's what prompted the scratch test.

So are we back to it not being DLC because it scratched? Or it's a sub-par DLC compared to the first gen, and that's why Apple removed reference to it?

And I will not use knife test if I bought a refurbished Watch from him again at Apple Store :)

...so maybe this is my fault, although it shouldn't be.

I just went to apple.com to buy a black leather band for my Space Black Series 2 Apple Watch and... there is no leather band with space black stainless steel hardware. So I'm forever stuck with a black sport band, unless I want to shell out $200-$550 for a milanese or link band.

I'm thinking about getting the link band. Initially I hated it, it completed the 80s casio calculator watch look the AW has. But I'm starting to come around and find myself liking it more and more.

My only concern is I've read several reviews which note that the black coating on the black SS band comes off pretty easily, much more easily than the black SS watch itself. I'm pretty rough on my watches, which is the reason I got a SS one, but now I'm wondering if the silver SS with the silver link band was a better choice. Who has the black link band and how is it holding up?

Stan at Apple already confirmed it was DLC like the 1st gen, I copied the email I received from here earlier in this thread.

No idea, was just curious why they removed the mention so that's why I did my little test on the faulty watch. I don't think it's probably sub-par, Apple wouldn't have changed the manufacturing process from that of the 1st gen. I couldn't find many people complaining about the watch body getting scratched on the 1st gen, mainly the link bracelet.

Yeah, only the Sports band, milanese and link bracelet are specifically made to match. I'm happy with the sports band though, but mainly due to the fact the link bracelet is stupidly priced here. lol

I own both the regular and black stainless link bands. They have held up really well. I am more cautious with how I treat my bands. That said, the black link band shows very few scratches and the coating has not degraded in any way.

I like use the Black link band with the regular stainless Watch and the regular stainless band with the black stainless Watch. I like the contrast and look.

I never actually doubted that they would change the process for the colour from gen 1 to series 2. Just that I've seen a lot of people with a lot of conspiracy theories on the matter lately. A post like your "scratch test" could've sent some right back to thinking it's different, regardless of Stan's email.

I bought the black nylon band to go with my SBSS watch. It looks really smart - classier than the sport band in my opinion, and it's the band I'm currently wearing the most. I also have the black sport band and SB Milanese loop. I keep the Milanese loop for special occasions because if you're not careful it scratches the watch face.

I own both the black and pearl nylon bands, which are Very comfortable, durable.

I know you weren't doubting, I just wanted to share my findings that's all. I'm going with what Stan said as I've not seen anyone else complaining about body scratches, so am not worrying if my replacement will scratch. Perhaps it was a dodgy coating, perhaps when I flicked the knife it dented the steel underneath, I don't know, but not really worried to be honest.

Switching the link bracelets looks awesome in my opinion too

Have you seen this happen with the Space Black? The DLC is so tough I figured it would be difficult for it to be hurt by the Milanese, no?

Yes. I actually returned my first SBSS Apple Watch with Milanese because it was scratched when I received it. The marks looked like they'd been caused by the band during assembly. I wore it for a couple of days after requesting the return and more scratches appeared on both the screen and the case in this time. That band is ridiculously abrasive!

I've read about this as well. powerbook911, the Milanese has the same coating so it's very possible to scratch itself.

Speaking of bands though, does anyone have any of the new nylon colours with their SB watches? Have been curious about the Tahoe blue and toasted coffee colours. Even the orange. There aren't any Apple stores near me and I haven't been able to find any photos on the internet.

Thanks for both of those responses. I had hoped to treat myself to the Space Black Milanese in the coming month. I guess I will pass now. Sure appreciate reading this, a bummer for sure, but rather not hurt my watch.

How many in here purchased the $500+ SB link band?

Currently, I have the black sport and SB milanese and thinking of adding the SB link one.

Anyone NOT happy w their SB link band??

I've got the SB link bracelet model. Absolutely love it.

powerbook911, I'm actually looking to get the SB Milanese loop too. While it does suck that it can scratch the watch, I just plan on making sure to set it down on its side so it doesn't lay on the strap and scratch the ceramic back. Also being conscious not to let it flop over the front too.

Do you have an Apple one or third party?

Is it worth the huge price tag??

Apple one. Worth it? That's hard to say since any person will vary so much. I got it as the full combo. Wife has the regular SS link combo. We both felt that's how the Watch looked best in terms of bands. So we paid what we had to pay. Would it have been better if it were cheaper? Of course lol. But when we got ours, we obviously liked them enough to justify the cost. About a year and a half later, neither of us regret the purchase.

The only time I got a bit annoyed with the price was when they released the space black sport band combo. That model cost the same as the regular SS sport band combo. I then saw that Apple felt they should charge the extra $100-250 on the band, and not on the actual watch. But it is what it is :)
