Does anyone here have previous generations of either version? I'm curious how the coating and screen have held up over time as I'm currently torn between which one I should order.

Thank you for your help in advance :)

Alonso, the best way is to go to Apple store or Best Buy now and feel them on yourself. I have the MM with SS, I love mine. CAn't comment the others.

Good luck.

Thank you for your kind reply :) I've visited the store and checked them out, I'm just wondering how they hold up over time with normal wear-and-tear. I ordered my Series 0 on launch day and it is scarred :D

I have a series 2 SS in silver and it's held up well. Personally didn't like the idea of the black as I was concerned about visible scratches through the finish. Not that I've needed to do it but the natural SS (silver) can always be polished should it become scratched.

I dont blame you. My colleague has a black first gen. Still holding up. I have the Steel, all scaratched along the side, kinda nice. Got the vintage look. ;-)

That makes sense, the space black is so beautiful though :p

If your colleague's first gen is still holding up then that makes me feel more confident. Thanks!

My SS0 is still going strong, no scratches on the face or underside - despite a lot of active use. Sides have swirls but nothing deeply scratched ... looks nice I think!

Hope that helps

I got an original SB at launch and wore it every day. When I bought a S3 SB I gave my dad my old watch and he wears it every day now. It still looks amazing, no noticeable marks on the watch at all.

I'm wearing SBSS zero scratch on body or screen. I think DLC coating held up, now thinking of getting SS but now I'm worry it will get more scratches compared to SBSS.

I have a S3 space black and like it. Its holding up great looks brand new. Only thing is that people don't really notice it as much as polished SS it sorta blends in. It does look close to aluminum space gray on a quick glance. I'm worried that the regular SS will get all scratched up. The space black get kinda mucky if that make sense and it doesn't really shine.

I'm torn.

My first AW was SS (original) I sold it and upgraded to Series 2 SS (Space Black). So, I’ve had both and from my perspective:
  • The main “pro” for the SS is that is looks great with every band. The main “con” is that is does get nicked and scraped.
  • The main “pro” or the SS (Space Black) is that it is very resistant to nicks and scrapes. The main “con” is that band choices are limited (in my view) as only certain colors really “pop” with the space black SS watch.
What am I going for next? SS! The band options “Trump” durability...at least for me!

S2SS and S3SBSS here. Love the silver for band compatibility, but it has a few visible rubs in the shiny finish. I kind of like it that way. Screen is of course flawless, and it had taken quite a few hits.

SBSS series 3 has also taken a few hits and looks like I just took the plastic off it out of the box. The SBSS finish is amazing. I will be ordering S4 in silver SS though since I can wear it with more bands.....

Owned both and preferred the Silver over the SB as it provided so much more flexibility with band choices. The SB doesnt really go with much.
Ugh. I've heard this over the years and have always preferred space black, but since I'm taking the plunge with SS this year, maybe silver is the way to go...

Yea having had both it’s very real in my experience and I wear suits daily to work and the SS offered much more flexibility in that regard. With that being said the SB went well with more casual fair but so did the SS and it’s flexibility.

I am talking myself out of the gold SS as I can’t see it playing well with many bands either like the SS

I was in your position a few years back and I decided on the regular SS. I wanted to be able to polish it, and I can say from experience it's been nice being able to buff out scratches. I'm also pleased with how many bands it goes with. Currently I'm wearing it with the black sport loop. The space black would limit you to really only red, black, grey or white bands.

I love the Space Black for the durability! It’s freaking awesome when it comes to dings and scratches as I’ve hit it pretty hard against some tough surfaces and not a single scratch or gash.

As for the band argument, I can see the point of view of less incompatibility but all the bands I have work wonderfully with it so I’ll probably be getting the S4 in space black again as it looks so sexy.

This is me, as well, and I mostly agree. Except I am sticking with black this year. There are enough bands that match with no problem.

Can someone explain the pros of pre-ordering? How much quicker can you get, say, a SS model by pre-ordering as opposed to buying it when it comes out?

you know when its coming.. store stock varies by store so if you want it day one preorder is the way to go. You can pick up in store.

Same here. I opted originally for the gold stainless, change my mind back to the black stainless. I have well over 22 bands, and surprisingly, they actually really do pair well with the black stainless more so than others think.

I had/have the same question. I normally order phones and watches in space black or gray. However I am looking to go for a more professional look for the office and loved how the silver looked with a brown leather band on Hermès model. While I couldn’t justify the $1300 for the Hermès, I did end up ordering a silver SS S4 and plan on picking up a nice leather band to go with it.
