I had/have the same question. I normally order phones and watches in space black or gray. However I am looking to go for a more professional look for the office and loved how the silver looked with a brown leather band on Hermès model. While I couldn’t justify the $1300 for the Hermès, I did end up ordering a silver SS S4 and plan on picking up a nice leather band to go with it.

I can't justify it either, so will be going SS and buying another band (had previously purchased a band for my ceramic) from the below seller, she does great work and is lovely to deal with.

The Only reason someone would purchase the Hermès, is strictly because of the leather band. There is no other valid reason aside from the Hermes watch face why someone would want that specific model. But truthfully, as price high as it is, I don’t know how long I see Apple associating a partnership with Hermes, but perhaps still selling their leather bands on the side.

Exact same experience here, had both, prefer SS for band availability and it’s more a classic watch look to me.

I’d be suited up also, personally I think it looks better.

Yea having had both it’s very real in my experience and I wear suits daily to work and the SS offered much more flexibility in that regard. With that being said the SB went well with more casual fair but so did the SS and it’s flexibility.

I am talking myself out of the gold SS as I can’t see it playing well with many bands either like the SS

I have owned the space black versions for a while now and none of them suffered a single scratch. The current AW3 LTE still looks like brand new. Even the year old Leather Loop looks like the day I put it on the watch. The eBay cr^p might be cheaper but it does not hold up like the real Apple stuff.

I have had SS and SSSB and Ceramic. Obviously Ceramic was the nicest as it looked great and after a year it still looked brand new.
SS is the best for bands and looks the business as its very bling. But it does scratch easily and although you can polish them out it is the least resistant to knocks and bashes so if you are OCD, it will be a nightmare.. Space Black is fantastic and thats why i ordered again this morning. It doesn't mark or scratch and still looks new after a year. However, people think that choice of bands can be limited....but check this guy out with many bands for his space black....looking good

I'm pretty OCD and that's why I got a grey ceramic last time. Still on the fence whether to just keep my ceramic, or sell it for a SS and get a nice leather strap.

I had a S0 Space Black and it held up extremely great and still looked fine when I sold it. I've been using a S2 Space Black since then and it still looks great as well even after countless dings on various things. When I upgrade again it will probably be another Space Black one. (Still have just under a year of AC+ on this one, so not changing until at or near that time.)

I think I did see a SB watch that had slight marks on it before caused by the Black Milanese loop. I've never owned one of those bands though, only the Black Link Bracelet and the Sport Bands.

Still have a S0 silver SS one. The screen is still flawless and i hit stuff with it quite often. There are micro-scratches on the steel, but it still is quite shiny and with a little bit of polish would look nearly new. All in all i am positively surprised how well it held up over all those years. This time round i go for the space black one, just for a change. Oh, and i have to buy quite a few new bands now i guess. Silver milanese loop or white plastic bands would look kinda weird on the black one ,)

That has happened to S0 Watch after I bought the SB Milanese. I am now very careful never to let the band wrap around the sides if the Watch body.

Even so, the micro scratches are almost impossible to see unless you get right close and look for them specifically. Check this out:

The main issue with space black is the band limitations. Not only it is very limiting as a color in general but any band with metal connectors is designed for the silver one.

I recommend the classic leather band from Nomad Goods. I use it with my silver SS Apple Watch and it’s a great band.

Not really. I thought that originally when I purchased the space black Apple Watch, but after pairing it with leather bands, both the black stainless and regular link band, sport bands ect , the options actually are more versatile than you think. It doesn't have the versatility the regular stainless has, but as someone who owns over 20 bands, all of them pair of the black stainless one way or the other.

By any chance do you have a picture of your SB with a brown leather band?

I gave my space black away in spite of the Series 4 . But once I have my space black by the 21st, I will pair it with my brown leather loop band and post a picture, and tag you.

The issue is that as far as Apple’s options go you are excluded from anything that has metallic lugs. Also, Black pairs well only with very dark colors or more fluescent “sporty” colors. These are very big limitations. Sure you could try third party makers but in my opinion no one comes even close to Apple’s options. They are just not as refined.

I’ve seen people pairing SB with all kinds of bands but personally I don’t find most of them appealing. Having said that, overall I do find the SB case more appealing than the SS.

Black pairs with almost anything. It really just depends on one's own preference and style. The reality is,the contrast doesn't look as bad as you're making it sound. It just appears that the black stainless is not borderline of what you want. But I highly recommend that you go to the Apple Watch thread where others show pictures of the watch, and the black stainless pairs almost with everything that you can think of in terms of bands, aside from the lugs that Can contrast.

I have an original SS and ordered a S4 SBSS. I have both a knockoff Link and a knockoff Milanese and some sport bands. My biggest concern in trying to decide Silver v Space Black v Nike+ Space Grey was bands.

1. I hardly wear my Link or Milanese.
2. There are some options out there for Space Black metal bands I've already found.

3. But one of the biggest reasons I decided to go SB was that with the original through Series 3, the screen and case size showed off the Silver. With the size of the S4 screen, I feel that the case is reduced and the SB actually benefits from the case/screen edge seamless blend and the Silver case won't look as good because it is reduced. The case is barely higher than the crown on the side.

I have a Space Black SS on order but am now leaning to towards the Silver. Main reason is that I work in an office and wear a shirt and tie and I just think that the Silver looks more dressy.

The Hermes watch faces are what also set it apart from the non Hermes. The Apple Watch faces are just plain ugly. Every one of them. With the Hermes you get an unparalleled band but beautiful watch face. Apple will keep the association because that it all it has that make the watch a fashion item. Also, it is only a $450 premium for the most expensive offering AW with Milanese Loop.

Does anyone here have previous generations of either version? I'm curious how the coating and screen have held up over time as I'm currently torn between which one I should order.

Thank you for your help in advance :)

I wore my SBSS S3 for 10 straight months banging it around into metal, rock and more. I wore it 23 hours a day. It never got a single mark on the sapphire or the case. Not one. I have had the SBSS S4 for 2 weeks or so now and it too remains flawless.
