Not entirely sure how Murdoch ended up with a virtual monopoly on sports broadcasting in the UK.

Fortunately I don't possess any sports genes.

Unfortunately i do but i refuse to pay Skys prices so the pub will do for me

To be honest, I have found that a lot of the older Apple users (i.e. before Leopard) have slowly been losing interest in Apple products.

On a side note, I also see that it's mostly the new bandwagon jumpers that keep spewing the stupid crap in the forums like "buy Micro$oft and shut it down1!!111" "buy out dell and close that dumb company!" Guarantee these will be the same people that instantly jump ship the second the next "it" thing comes out.

Things tend to go round in cycles. Apple wont be at the top forever. I would never have thought in the early 90s that Sega would be where they are today

Getting exclusive rights to Premier League football at exactly the right time is what enabled Sky to get where they are today. Take away their sport exclusives and Sky wouldn't be a major force.

WRONG, forgot the cheap telephone, broad band and 50 HD channels have you? Care to mention how many HD channels it's nearest competitor has?

Same here. Perhaps Apple should get into pubs. :D

They only got where they are today because the sport allowed them to get established in back in the nineties.

We are trying to increase capacity and infrastructure but these things don't happen overnight.

I think everyone here is aware that you can't just create a new infrastructure over night, just like IP-based TV / movie rentals / the cloud won't happen that soon. The point is, it WILL happen, but as an evolutionary process. Most people won't even notice the change behind the curtains. They will just receive new set top boxes from Sky and from now on use the Internet for watching TV. You can see that happening right now for landline phones, which are being converted to VoIP for a rapidly growing number of people.
With everything being IP-based, it's a perfect time for IT companies like Apple or Google to enter the content delivery market. Both are probably pushing HEAVILY behind closed doors to speed up that conversion process. Apple already managed to recreate and dominate the business of music sales. They are gonna try that for TV too. They won't tell you beforehand, they will just do.

I don't want Sky and I don't go to pubs. I saved a fortune over the years and I actually have a better life as a result. I don't play the lottery either or spend my money on takeaway.

Cash in the bank...

Started to read through, then got bor... zzzz.

Has anyone stopped to think that:

1) Apple are charging too much for their end product?
2) Apple may be pusing down too hard on Opex?

Don't get me wrong they are certainly doing something right to get to where they are now, from where they were some 12 years ago. That's great strategy development and execution.

But as someone else has mentioned, there's nothing in their product set (IMHO) that makes me want to upgrade anymore. OK, I need more RAM on my old RevA C-D iMac to edit photos from my 7D. But everything else just doesn't quite seem complete (iPad with no front-facing camera; new MBA with no SIM; etc). They sed to provide products that (Steve told us) we wanted. But we want more now as we are more savvy.

They do great products, but I think they don't quite get the "global" market still - I feel that they are still US centric, and that's going to hurt them in time (IMHO).

Oh, and the other think I saw here was people saying stuff about crappy B/Band in UK.? I've got >20Mbps uncapped @ £15pm. OK, I live in a city but we do have good reach across most of the UK. There are some parts that don't but we have options - one of which is to mobilise local excahnges through local business development. Do your research if you don't like it. O2 for me has been a breath of fresh air compaired to TalkTalk!!! Also, our mobile connectivity is a lot more advanced that the other side of the pond (or so I'm lead to believe) - hence the crappy hardware in the iPhone line up which is holding back the rest of the world (read the US centric bit above).

Anyway, just my thoughts, and could be completely wrong; partly right; or what ever.

All in all, however, anyone entity with a market cap >$200bn should be doing a SHED LOAD MORE for the society(ies) they exploite! PERIOD!!!

Here comes the iGame move. Where your iPhone is the controller XD idk if this is true but I hope so

Improvements to the UK's fibre-optic network being undertaken by British Telecom are set to bring 40Mbps broadband to 66 per cent of the UK households by 2015. That should be a big help but still a few years off yet.

I know you also dont game. Just what is it you do :p

I think it would be wise if Apple sat on the money like Nintendo is (or was)...treasure chest for a rainy day. But....if Apple bought sony, that would blow my mind. And there ARE reasons to do so.

1. Discontinue or alter Sony's laptop line, which some consider to be Apples competitor. It can now be modeled to be competitors to Dell, HP, etc.
2. Ownership of a huge catalog of music and movies.
3. Ownership of Playstation, already in tons of peoples houses, and its gaming connections/licenses/know how.
4. Control over a major blu-ray company...to keep blu-ray on a controlled leash.

I don't know enough about business to say this will happen, or won't. But Sony looks a mess to my eyes, and on its way down. Theres definitely reasons to buy Sony, but there are definitely reasons against it as well: expensive, not much good products, overly complicated sturcture etc etc.

It's not about acquisition of what essentially Sony does - although their TV's and the PS3 are certainly something not to be sniffed at. Companies acquire others more out strategic positioning; for example Apple will then be able to position itself better by being able to control the output of Sony. Perhaps making Sony concentrate on TV's and Consoles and closing all other output. Leaving the gap their for Apple to fill with a greater market share, which Sony took. From their, we may begin to see further development of the Sony brand in line with the Apple ethos. Eventually, possibly, removing the Sony brand altogether at a later stage - replaced with a true Apple TV and the rebirth of Apples games console in the shape of the PS4?

So in terms of seeing a fit. There most certainly is one there. More so in fact if you think of where Apple is looking to develop, rather than where it is now. Plus, that it has more to do with control of the market, growing market share for Apple and taking the key developments of Sony, namely their TVs and PS3.

I thought exactly the same thing. It aint about merging the companies. It's about controlling market share. Additionally, I've always held the opinion, that whilst Apple holds the brand name for computing, Sony has always had it (for me at least) when it comes to TVs, HIFI systems, portable gaming and even for PCs... they both seem to offer style with their products, of course Sony lost in computing cos it was a PC :p and just ended up being overpriced, underwhelming, computers.

But the future possibilities of collaborations are definately there. If Apple TV wanted to be a full fledged TV they, could merge with Bravia, or if Apple wanted to produce a true portable gaming device, it could join up with PSP.

Meh possibilities are endless.

isn't sony bigger than apple??

By market capitilization, Apple (AAPL) is the second largest in the world only trailing Exxon-Mobil (XOM) by only about $50Billion.

Apple's market cap is $283 Billion (as of today).
Sony's (SNE) market cap is $34 Billion (as of today).

Apple has over $50Billion in the bank. Apple can buy Sony with just cash!!

However, Apple will not do that. Apple has a culture to protect. Apple will never make a large acquisition in terms of personnel. It is very hard to integrate. Instead they buy small companies with a strong product or technology. They might be spending money on a new data center ($1Billion) or pay in advance for all the flash memory that Samsung can make!! But they will never buy a company. If they do, then that will be the end of Apple!!

Tsla

I think they will buy Tesla Motors.

Why make magic tablets when you can make magic cars?

Market cap only 2 billion USD. Spare change for Apple.

OK, do you think Apple will consider buying shares of Intel (and maybe AMD) and scare the hell out of the PC market players (Micro$oft, Dell, HP...)?

Sex, money and Rock 'n Roll!!! :D Groovy, baby! Yeah! :)

No, honestly... I do sex. I make some money, I have some shares but I am rather an occasional gambler/social investor than a day trader. I take moderate risks with my little business, there is no point in not trying.

But I actually used to do a lot of gaming, although there is nothing exciting or particularly cool about the games I like. I adore the GTA series, I started with the very first one but I haven't had time for them since Vice City came out. I also loved the Anno series and the Age of Empires. There are some relaxed games that I liked - Chicago 1930, Robin Hood. I don't care how uncool this might sound but I still hope that one day, I would have time for these and to give Revolution a proper try.

But I think I spent most time with Risk, the first GTA and GTA III, AOE3, Lux Delux, Monopoly and Pac the Man X. I see small-time share dealing as a natural extension of these things and it's so much fun to risk actual money that I can lose. Currently I have some shares that I am very excited about. And no, I haven't had any AAPL for ages and I wouldn't even consider buying any at this price range. I'd rather risk the same amount in other stocks and hope for a quick turnaround. But again, I do that on a small scale, not more than 5-15.000 USD. That is not enough to give up any job or business, not even in a developing country.

Japan would not allow it

Not only that but I doubt if the Japanese government would allow such a buyout. Sony may have had soft sales recently but they are far from being insolvent. I cannot see Apple buying out such a foreign entity.

Apple swooping up NetFlix makes the most sense of those listed.

Agreed. Sony is much more tied to the Japanese country identity. Japan would see it as a matter of pride and would not allow this merger or buyout to happen.

Sony? I don't think so. As it has already been pointed out, Sony is a poorly orgainzied company, and I'd hate for Apple to try to swallow that animal.

I think as some point, Apple should realy consider starting to pay dividends to their stock holders.

Netflix? I don't think so. The whole disc shipping thing will be obsolete ten years from now (even though it's so strong now). Except if the improvement of US infrastructure gets axed.

Very interesting news.

I don't know if someone replied already but Netflix views themselves as primarily a streaming company now. Their shipping service is already slowly dying out as more and more shows are available to stream.

Yeah at the current price AAPL is not worth it unless you go in and go in large :D You should consider Steam. Its changed the way i use my Mac. Its now my games consoles as im no longer a heavy gamer.

If Apple wanted to get in the Console business or get Blu-Ray into macs then this might be the best way of doing it. I don't see it happening at all though. I agree Netflix is possible. I expect that there will be a new company posted each week though that Apple is supposed to buy :)

Apple, get your filthy hands out of the things I love. You already have your hands full ruining your own products (OSX)

It would make more sense for Google to buy Sony. Then they would have the hardware to launch their own OS and compete with Microsoft and Apple.

Apple should buy Nintendo. Then I can play Mario on my iPhone and stream iTunes to my Wii. :D

Google TV on Sony sets? Link

Sony Ericsson Premium Android Phones :D

Google to have Ipod alternative with Walkman range :D

Google Vaio Chrome/Android laptops :D

I could see why they would want it :)

Jobs was a fan of Akio Morita, one of Sony's founders and a driving force in the company before they lost their way. Jobs in the early days used to pull apart Sony gear to see how they were built with such precision.

It kinda makes sense but it's so out of the ordinary from the acquisitions Apple have made previously - small companies bought for the expertise to complement projects already underway.

Doubtful.

^
This

Also, Steve likes sushi. So it does kinda make a bit of sense.

If true, the new company could be called: Appleony

Actually, I always liked the Sony music players' designs. I think they got the software and the format wrong at the stage when they could have made any serious dent on Apple's share in the music player market. But honestly, Sony made some of the most beautiful music players ever. They even used aluminium before Apple did.

The one standout of possible acquisitions, in the article, could be Netflix. Think about it for a few reasons.

1) Netflix appeared on the new ATV.

2) There is a huge new Server Farm that is about to come online and no one knows what it is for. Perfect to handle streaming of video content :).

3) Netflix has recently signed deals for content.

Apple has had issues getting the studios to sign content deals. But Netflix has managed to secure some nice deals and a large streaming video library, which is to become even bigger in 2011. Purchasing Netflix would allow Apple to get the content they were unable to get through ATV. Also, since the Netflix App is existing on all iDevices and new ATV, the studios can't claim that this is a new use, which would require new agreements.

An aside would be that Apple could kill Blueray here without needing to purchase Sony, if they just cut off this source of distribution.
