Seems like the ads are gone? Down for retooling maybe? Regardless of why, good riddance!

I know MR needs revenue. As mentioned in another post, ads that appear in between posts, with different formatting are an option. Ads that look like a member talking in a discussion are disconcerting. The uncanny silicone valley...

Possibly on this topic, I've noticed the forum acting rather buggy since the appearance of the ads, or perhaps since their removal.

Some threads have a phantom last page. You click on page 6, but it's really just page 5. I've seen this temporarily here and there before, but I feel like there's been several occurances lately.

Also, the "last post by" seems to be lagging. If I make a reply to a thread, the index of the forum typically says my name under the topic immediately. Several times over the past day or so, it says the previous poster's name, not the current one.

The previous setup worked fine, as it is pretty annoying to follow a topic only to see an advertisement disguised as a forum post.

Ad revenues for websites are constantly shifting. We really have no idea how well any particular setup for ads is working today. I'm fine with this particular setup for ads. I think it's strange that the timestamp for the ad is in a different format than the comments and that the name "Sponsor" isn't a link. All of that will fade into the background rapidly.

In my score card, these ads are a vast improvement over the animated GIFs that were appearing in ads back in May. If we were being offered a choice between those 2 kinds of ads, I would strongly vote for the comment-like advertisements. :)

One other brief note: I like the Mack Weldon underwear ads that are appearing these days. I hope those are doing well for both MR and for the advertiser.

I can see no more ads but does say sponsored instead now on the bottom of the threads. Does that mean we are going back to normal now :D

Edit. Nope the ads are back again

Had a chance to use MR from a PC without my login stored and "enjoyed" those embedded ads. Really, the quality and positive experience of MR is suffering with this.
Now we have to read posts about how to optimize Mac OSX or virus protection, then reading comments from members it would not be heeded and finally run in commercials offering tools to cleanup macs. Very confusing and disturbing. Also I don't want to see all the other ads offering supplements or face lifting.

Dislike ...

what exactly you like about them? their exaggerated size? their intrusiveness?

Where is the downvote when we need it?

Well, I thought the bazinga and /s were implied

In seriousness though, I don't like them. But if they needed to be kept, please at least make the background or something a different color, to help identify them. That would help so much more because right now I see them as a forum post by a real person instead of an ad which is misleading... Maybe move the ads down or format them so they are not that intrusive. I know the site has to be kept up, and if this will do it I will have to live with it, regardless of what I think of the ads. But if you could generate revenue to keep the site running any other way, please do so. Having ads pop up every few posts sucks.

It also seems as if the ad changes, thus flagging the thread as having a new, unread post. I've opened several threads expecting new content, only to find the same old stuff, plus a new ad.

This is easily the most unpleasant forum that I currently read, so i doubt I'll stick around.

Finally something my school system's filter is good for. It removes the ads. Hah! All I see is "Sponsored" off to the left, and a blank post. I can live with that.

I see sponsored with it being blank then I sometimes see sponsored with an ad. So it seems to be a hit and a miss with these ads.

These are terrible.

Of course these ads are more appealing to advertisers because they get more clicks from people who mistakenly think these are genuine, relevant posts from actual forum users.

MacRumors taking part in this deliberately misleading advertising is insulting to forum users.

Ads like these are reasons people use adblock. When they become so obtrusive that they get in the way it becomes a problem.

Sponsored posts within threads

Arn,

Can you explain your silence on this feedback, and relate to us your intentions of removing these please.

Thank you.

Pretty much the same as before. I hear the complaints, understand them, and they are being taken into consideration. But we are in a testing phase with a 3rd party company and ad formats are being tested in a/b fashion.

I expect that we will change them or restore the original ad format for logged in users in time.

In the short term, the $25 annual subscription does removes these ads and others, though pushing that subscription was never the purpose of this testing.

Generic question, how much are you currently making on ads. This site is always packed so shouldn't the current format be enough? Why the change?

Not really sure I see an answer here that won't just trigger a flip answer from someone. But, staying the same is not a good long term strategy.

I'm not really willing to get into a public debate on the business-of-MacRumors. It should be pretty obvious. More revenue means more resources, which means stuff can happen faster and/or better.

I've always been cognizant of user experience, as I also read MacRumors.. and we do actively remove abusive ads. But, as I said, we're in testing for now, I expect things will change over time. Please bear with it, or buy an ad-free subscription.
