While I agree that aluminium casing looks cheap on watch, I disagree about the iPhone.

Aluminium casing on iPhone looks and feels way better than the glass back on iPhone 4. To be honest... When I compare iPhone 4 and iPhone 6 side by side, iPhone 4 looks like a cheap toy compared to iPhone 6.

the hell it does... ip4 was GOAT. miss mine so much.

No ones saying it's cheap. They said it LOOKED cheap. Big difference. I'm sure it's great but on a watch the absolute standard is steel

Would you like a Steel iPad?

Would be stronger and more premium?

High polished steel iPhone, feel higher quality also I guess and stronger?

Most wealthy people aren't foolish with their money. Broke people that want to look rich are. Them's there's the facts.

This begs the question why you're getting an Apple Watch at all. Spending $400 on a remote screen for your iPhone – nothing more, nothing less – does sound foolish when you think about it long enough...

i went to check them out in store and I kinda agree.

the aluminum finish looks more hard plastic than actual metal, especially on the harder silver finish (space grey looks better)

the crown itself doesn't have the textile feel I thought it would. I was expecting mechanical clicks when I turn it. but there isn't any... that's when it hit me that this is a digital watch, not the same as my Omega or even my Seiko

Apple said from beginning, that's it is a digital crown. So it wouldn't have mechanical clicks.

Disagree 200%. And I tried them on.

Me too.

Just got back from my Apple store appointment. I thought the silver aluminum model looked cheap (almost like a kid's toy) but I actually thought the SG aluminum looked better than the SS. The only thing about the SG aluminum was the digital crown - it looked flimsier vs. the digital crown on the SS.

I liked the watch more than I thought I would.

Your are paying for the convenience really, and people will pay good money for that. For example I can leave my phone in the locker, when at the gym getting my work out on. I have a pair of BlueBuds X, that I will use with my watch. There are so many things that I will be using AW watch for. The thing is defferent people have deferent life style. The watch will be beniificail for some, and others not so much. But it's all good at the end of the day.

I totally agree with this thread.

Stainless steel is a bit too expensive for me given that it will be outdated in a year (probably) and possibly completely useless in 3 years.

Sports edition looks like something I would not want to wear for anything except while at the gym, but I would rather get a smaller fitness tracker for that.

Yeah I think even if the different materials have different feels, the difference isn't worth the extra cost for many. SS may be nicer, but does that justify the extra cost? For many, the answer is no. I will certainly consider more premium materials once I've had a year of this device, know that it is for me and genuinely useful, know what gen 2 is like and Apple Pay is rolled out in the UK (where I live).

.... and an iPad is just a bigger iPhone... and an iPhone is just an iPod Touch that can make phone calls....

These statements and your statement DO sound foolish when you think about it.

While I doubt it will be useless in 3years, U may have a point maybe. My 4s that was handed down to a family member, is still going strong. The AW Sport could be used for casual and formal occasions depending on the band one will used. They may not have the material of the SS or Eidtion. But I wouldn't call them cheap either.

It doesn't click, but if you are scrolling a list the watch gives feedback that makes it feel like there is tension on the wheel. And if you push far enough you feel the "snap-back" of the list view. Doesn't work on the try-on units, but you can feel it on the demo models.

He, like some reviewers, just don't "get it." The Watch is more about behavior. It changes how we use the system and services, how we experience them, and it changes the social dynamic regarding notifications and etiquette.

Wow did you go to an Apple Store? I thought the sport looked great and the SS is nothing really special, just felt a little heavier. I'm very excited to get my sport on 4/24!

The Sport does look great indeed. But I have to disagree with u, that the SS is nothing really specail. The SS is drop dead gorgeous. I went to the apple to try on the SG Sport. Sleek and beautiful, but i wasn't impressed with the way it look on my arm. Tried the SS on, and the reaction from my wife and her girl friends Said it all, they was like Wow!!! That's the one.

And I was like darn it to myself, because I sadly agreed with them. Sadly because I was not planing on spending an extra $200. But it would be worse to spend $400 and not be happy with look of the 42mm SG on my arm. So I order this one yesterday.

And for many the extra cost for the SS, the answer is yes. in the end be happy with what ever u chose, it's all good.

ITT: People trying to justify their SS purchase.

On a more serious note, I do believe that the Sport has a real place for many people. There are those of us that value and prioritize a sporty, healthy aesthetic over others. No matter what anyone says, it isn't all about the money. We need to stop thinking of watch selection as a shorthand for net worth of the wearer. I bought the Sport when I could afford the SS. It is a matter of personal taste and image.

Agree!!

I agree as well. I thought the sport looked nice on Apple's website but not good in person. Even my husband who thought he'd get the sport changed his mind after seeing it in the store.

Please try to follow the line of argumentation before posting a reply.

EDIT That was uncalled for, maybe I should explain...

In the post I was replying to as well as his previous one abluehaze seems to imply that because the Apple Watch is Apple's half-cocked, probably short-lived, compromised and altogether not very useful first shot at this market you should cut your losses and go for the cheapest model. I'm saying, with that mindset, why would you buy one at all, for goodness' sake?

If, on the other hand, you trust that the Apple Watch will be useful, successful, enduring and every bit as magical as Apple tells us then why not go for a choice of style and materials that underlines and complements this promise?

Mind you, I'm not advocating that everybody should get a stainless steel watch. I do believe that for fitness freaks and similar lifestyles the Watch Sport will be the better choice.

Exactly. Or just mess with the heads of folks who bought aluminum. :)

I'm skipping the v1 watch, but aluminium was by far the most sensible choice, IMHO, for an unproven first generation device of unknown utility.

I hope everyone enjoys their watch. It's a lot of money, even the "cheapest".

Agree!!

Yeah it does look as if it's made of plastic. I don't think the durability is there either

The durability will there. Do some research on 7000 series aluminum heat treated with magnesium and zinc. It will be has durable as the SS.

I looked at them all in the store yesterday and actually was surprised by how nice this sports model was. Colorful, fun, cool looking. Really, all the watches looked fantastic -- especially the Edition. But if you are a fitness buff like me you probably have a drawerful of plastic sports type chronos along with ith fine watches and the list is even longer for lost and unused Fitbits, etc. The sports model fits a niche for the active crowd and at its price point is easier to justify when you already own other watches and intend to keep wearing them. If this new watch is intended to be your go-to then yes the higher end models make more sense.
Note I did not get to try them on instore but several people commented that the stainless was heavy -- so again, for workouts the sports model makes more sense. Really depends on what you are using it for.

I don't think it looks cheap and is definitely a good buy for the price.

Having said that. The Sport watch does not look as good in person as the promotional images whereas the SS stands up pretty well in person.

I got to try on the one I will actually be buying

I think the problem with the Sport is the glaring difference between the matte silver body and the shiny black bezel around the watch face. On the SS models as well as the SG models, the transition is more subtle because of the color of the metal. On the sport it sticks out like a sore thumb, especially when the screen is off, as it was during many try on appointments.

Sadly, if I had the PreOrder to do over again, I'd have gotten the SS rather than the sport, despite the price difference after seeing them in person.
