I assume this will work on Carplay where it is the most needed. And it’s good news indeed. This issue has always been my single biggest frustration with Apple. And with the change to ipadOS, dark mode, and improvements to SIRI shortcuts they are addressing some of my secondary ones with look, feel, and automation.

One by one, bit by bit, Apple is crossing off the things that have been on my wantlist and that have bugged me for years. I finally feel that it is a more useful platform now. They should have done a lot of this stuff sooner, but at least they are doing it now.

Especially this SIRI thing though. Things like that push people to Android looking for other solutions. Now, they have one less reason. And that’s a good thing!

Hey Siri, play Old Town Road on Spotify.

Ask that now and Siri will tell you that it cannot play songs from Spotify, but that could change soon. Apple is opening up its SiriKit framework to third-party music, podcasts, audiobooks, and radio apps in iOS 13 and iPadOS, enabling users to use Siri to control audio playback in supported apps.

Mockup of Siri support for Spotify

It will be up to developers to enable this functionality in their apps. We've reached out to Spotify, Amazon, Google, Pandora, Tidal, Overcast, Castro, and several other popular music and podcasts app developers to see if they have plans to support Siri, and we'll update this story if we hear back.

Spotify recently accused Apple of anticompetitive business practices, and its inability to integrate with Siri was one of its complaints. "Apple won't allow us to be on HomePod and they definitely won't let us connect with Siri to play your jams," said Spotify. Going forward, the latter is no longer the case.

The first betas of iOS 13 and iPadOS were seeded to developers on Monday, with public betas to follow in July. The software updates will be widely released in the fall, likely alongside new iPhones in September as usual.

You can airplay Spotify to homep
You can get PiP on Android without premium.
google doesn’t allow iOS users to do that. It’s 100% on them to allow this feature not Apple

This really deserves a finally. But how are all those who think Apple is this anti-competitive monopoly going to spin this?
They're going to spin it as Apple trying to get out in front of possible fines or other sanctions. Just like yesterday's announcement that they are reversing their "keeping the kids safe" MDM ban. Now, that could just be coincidence. Or that could be Apple trying to get out in front of issues before they become even bigger issues.

Apple is letting water out to ease pressure on the dam, so to speak. Nevertheless, glad they’re opening Siri up to competitors.

Apple creates new features and subsystems then after a while these become available to developers. It’s been like this with iOS since day one.

Urgh I moved from Spotify to Apple Music solely because of this issue... I could see myself moving back... :D

Sounds like they need to adopt HomeKit better
nest and apple aren't the best of friends I don't think apple will ever support nest stuff. As far as lifx their HomeKit support is bad. Unless you use one color for everything or never change a scene in the lifx app and reset it in HomeKit. Its the biggest frustration with their stuff. Hue works amazing always.

Yes. But this opens things up to competitors that could affect their music services revenue stream which they have been HIGHLY protective of over the years. (See post #32) :D.

So the timing on this seems awfully coincidental.

Nest/Google have decided not to support HomeKit; that's not Apple's fault. For Lifx, I also believe this falls on them to add shortcuts support to their app; I don't know if there's anything missing in iOS 12 from getting this to work.
lifx is ok except for the led strips that can do different colors for different sections of the strip. It seems to work when I change the colors of the strip in lifx then save the scene in HomeKit. But it only works for one set of colors I can't do different scenes for different color combinations. I mostly just leave them on one color set till I get tired of it now or use the lifx app. Single color combinations are fine though.

[doublepost=1559747840][/doublepost]Such great news! I use Spotify exclusively for music, so this functionality is very welcomed!

I understand that. Just pointing out it's not on every platform that requires to have premium.

Finally! This is the Big Feature I’ve been waiting for. Especially useful when driving and not wanting to take hands off wheel/eyes off road (Spotify and PocketCasts). Thank you Apple!!! Next on wish list: “Hey Siri, take me to the nearest Starbucks using Google Maps”

Not on my phone rundning Oreo. How do you do it?

Nevertheless, on ios Pip only works om iPads anyway. Lot of other videoapps seems to support it except Youtube, so clearely Google have no intention at all to bring PiP to any iOS device at all.

Any word on how the libraries would be defined for 3rd party apps? I'm curious as a user how this would work? It seems too easy that we'd be able to say "Play [anything] on [third party app]". I'm worried that clunky syntax (knowing exactly how Siri expects you to ask this and what things it could find for which third party app) or too onerous demands on developers (needing to carefully define the world of content that a user could call for in a way that the user could understand/expect, and keeping this somewhat standard across similar apps) could make this too difficult for adoption. I'm curious to hear more detail on this.

Sadly I think this will be why I switch to Ecobee and cancel my nest doorbell order. It’s a business decision that I think will have a bad outcome for google.

Homebridge allows all your non homekit devices to work with homekit. My nest stuff all work in homekit.

I've been able to use Siri with Pandora now for several months ever since they added support for Siri Shortcuts to their app. So I'm not exactly sure what has been stopping Spotify from doing the same.

This would be great if it worked for HomePod too, but I seriously
doubt that's the case... which would make owning a HomePod but using a third party service still frustrating.

I could possibly see Apple using Handoff for this, where if the request to Play X on Spotify is initiated from the Homepod and the users iOS device is on the same network the request could be handed off to the device and then airplayed to the speaker. I would be satisfied if Apple would implement this function until they can make native Homepod apps or skills.

Pretty sure it's a setting you have to enable. Try going to Settings > Apps and Notifications > Advanced > Special Access > Picture in Picture. Then tap YouTube. Tap the toggle and boom.

I'll do you one better though. Download and install YouTube vanced. Looks exactly like YouTube, but without ads and you can play the video in background, even with the device locked.

This makes me happy. I love Carplay, but I prefer Amazon for streaming music (has all the music that I need and, with my Prime membership, it's less expensive than Apple Music) and I would like to be able to use Siri. Same with Waze.

Let me know when I can do this with Google Maps.

I'm pretty sure this is coming as well, at least I've read several articles that mention that Siri will be able to work with apps like Waze in carplay with iOS 13, so I think that is what it is implying.
