Pretty sure it's a setting you have to enable. Try going to Settings > Apps and Notifications > Advanced > Special Access > Picture in Picture. Then tap YouTube. Tap the toggle and boom.

It is enabled under that setting, but still does not work. According to google support document, premium membership is required to run youtube in the background. That is my issue.

there needs to be Siri support system wide for every app.
I hate that I can't use Siri for my nest. or deeper Siri commands for lifx bulbs that the developer can add for shortcuts to scenes for their bulbs/led strips.

There is Siri support already for these, both with Siri Shortcuts and via Homekit - it's up to the developers to build the support, Apple already did their work.

You can also control both with Siri via Homebridge seen as the makers can't be bothered to do the work to make them compatible the Homebridge community did instead.

Then just download youtube vanced. It's literally the same exact app, without ads and works in the bg. Doesnt need root. It's stupid easy to install:

Yeah if you have a Mac that's always on. Not many people do. I don't...
Mine is. Though you can also put it on a very cheap raspberry pi. Doesn't have to be a mac. You can run it on anything.
Much much cheaper than replacing all your smart devices just so they work with homekit.

Seem like this decision is an effort at some damage control to make Apple look more fair considering the monopoly accusations Spotify has been making about Apple recently. I’m sure that Tim Cook begrudgingly allowed this to happen since he wants all Apple device customers to subscribe to Apple Music. This will be a real win for the consumers though. From what I understand, Spotify is much better than Apple Music.

I could never figure out how to use homebridge I remember trying and being frustrated I couldn’t figure it out. Not sure how I’d use Siri shortcuts for any of that either.

If the app supports Siri shortcuts you just give it a phrase and siri turns it off and on.

Either way you're blaming Apple for something they've already done, they have access in multiple ways to do this, it's your accessory manufacturers you should be shouting at.

im blaming them both for not coming to an agreement with each other. I understand nest isn't the best with apple but I do love them. Apple could ease up and work with nest but it doesn't seem like either want to help each other or their customers. Would be nice having my camera in HomeKit too but oh well. Ill look more into shortcuts but I don't think it can set the temp to a certain degree or scenes for lifx to exact colors besides one set color like red or white.

Based on Apple’s track record, I have a hard time believing that the iPads or Apple TVs in my house will do anywhere near as good of a job recognizing that an object the camera spots is a person and then reliably notify me like Nest does in the cloud. If Apple has taught us anything about their privacy-first approach thus far, it is that there are usually performance trade offs.

Sorry, based on Google’s record ignoring my privacy, I would never want them having cameras in and around my home. If you are concerned about it on device recognition, consider the NetAtmo, which has said they will offer their own recognition or Apple’s HomeKit Secure video - your choice.

I’m confused. Based on your previous comment, you have a Nest Hello which you are considering canceling the subscription on. In that case, you do have a Google camera at your home.

Siri is still barely usable when runing non-English country settings and asking for English songs, singers or movies (which is naturally quite a lot). I hope this also will improve further.

Yeah I have it set to english for this reason. But on the most important place where you don't have a keyboard; the Apple TV, you can't even change the Siri language. Pisses me off.

Well, it improves steadily. Yet I cannot switch to English as we also heavily rely on Siri and HomeKit - and we like our native language.

Sorry, I cleaned my original post. I meant that HomeKit Secure Video would be enough of a reason for me not to want to get a Nest Camera. The original poster to whom I was replying was considering switching from Nest to Ecobee and cancelling a Nest Doorbell order. Neither the original poster nor I have a Nest Doorbell (but I was not considering getting one and the original poster was). :)

CarPlay getting Waze/Google Maps was a huge first step last year, glad that they're continuing to practice that. It's a challenge to the Apple Maps team that hey, you're not going to be protected by our preferential treatment, compete, be better, so that people make the decision to use our app over the competitors, nothing builds innovation like true competition..

Exactly. Apple Maps has been getting better and better over time. To the point that I actually prefer it now in many cases. A recent road trip is a good example. Google maps was all over the place and telling us turns too late also. It was driving me crazy so I flipped things to Apple instead and got some peace and quiet...and better directions...lol. I also always forget that it works with my watch too. Great feature. Love the turn signal sound donk DONK, donk DONK that it makes. I don’t think I could ever miss a turn with that going off on my wrist...lol.

Some of Spotifys complaints I understand, but even if you take those into account, Spotify currently doesn't utilise the devices to their full potential. Why are they not building in shortcuts? That's an easier way to integrate with Siri. Why have they not produced an Apple Watch app that stores music on the Watch? Overcast does it with podcasts. Speaking of podcasts, it isn't a good podcast player either. I don't want my music player and podcast player to be basically identical - these are different media, and should be treated differently.

I feel as though some of this is an excuse from Spotify for not pushing forward as much as they could. There are areas they are not held back on, and simply are not providing features. I'm currently moving to Apple Music, away from Spotify. Apple Music also has issues, and the "for you" generated playlists are not as good as Spotifies, but I feel like progress is being made with Apple Music.

I could be wrong, but I have always had the impression that Spotify likely has a VERY small team of people because of how slow they move. It took them 18 months to support Chromecast which is something people were asking them for a LOT.

Lets see how long it will take Spotify to add Siri support now after all the crying.

Based on how long it took them to support Chromecast, I’d say two years from now. Which will suck. I hope they somehow get their butts moving on this one faster.

You're probably correct - the Apple Watch app (which is nothing more than a "now playing" "app") also took years to come. I agree that Spotify is probably running very light on staff, especially compared to the might of Apple. But that also supports the argument that whilst some of Spotify claims are valid, a lot of the reason they are behind is due to their own inability to produce features. Spotify on Android also doesn't harness the full abilities - so claiming Apple are holding them back is a little disingenuous. Especially when they welcomed the competition before.

I'm subscribed to both. My kids prefer Spotify because there is a lot of obscure K-Pop and other such stuff that isn't on Apple Music. I prefer the Apple Music UI and I like the Watch integration. Spotify recommendations tend to beat Apple Music, however. And I avoid both Apple and Spotify products for podcasts because they're terrible.

Opening up Siri to others has its advantages, but I highly doubt Spotify will harness these new features any time soon.

They stated siri will work with waze in ios13.

and for the past couple of years. But we'll see going forward....
The Nest API is being shuttered come August. I think they’re keeping the lights on for a little while afterwards, but until further information comes out of Nest, Homebridge won’t work soon.
