This makes me happy. I love Carplay, but I prefer Amazon for streaming music (has all the music that I need and, with my Prime membership, it's less expensive than Apple Music) and I would like to be able to use Siri. Same with Waze.
They stated siri will work with waze in ios13.

For now...
and for the past couple of years. But we'll see going forward....

I didn't know this but Spotify might have a case after all, I don't know why Spotify wasn't allowed on Siri but Apple Music works perfectly with Alexa. This would be a legit anti competitive practices but I disagree if Spotify would just want to be exempted from paying Apple through subscription.

I've been able to use Siri with Pandora now for several months ever since they added support for Siri Shortcuts to their app. So I'm not exactly sure what has been stopping Spotify from doing the same.
With shortcuts you can control spotify as well.

Sadly I think this will be why I switch to Ecobee and cancel my nest doorbell order. It’s a business decision that I think will have a bad outcome for google.
HomeKit Secure video would be enough to get me to cancel a Nest Doorbell.

And the former isn't currently the case; you can play Spotify on your HomePod. True, it's not as easy as playing Apple Music, but Spotify isn't being honest.

Wow, Spotify whining about something when they practically control the market? No! They should get rid of their bad compression algorithm instead of complaining about what others are doing

It is naive to think that Apple just decided this due to a lawsuit. It was likely planned for many months ago.

Spotify is like the whiny sniveling kid that you just want to punch in the face.

Hk
there needs to be Siri support system wide for every app.
I hate that I can't use Siri for my nest. or deeper Siri commands for lifx bulbs that the developer can add for shortcuts to scenes for their bulbs/led strips.

Sounds good..... but remember the more you open up to 3rd party apps the more you risk how they use your data. Not all devs are as invested in protecting your data as Apple. We have recently seen big names in software misuse personal data.

I assume this will work on Carplay where it is the most needed. And it’s good news indeed. This issue has always been my single biggest frustration with Apple. And with the change to ipadOS, dark mode, and improvements to SIRI shortcuts they are addressing some of my secondary ones with look, feel, and automation.

One by one, bit by bit, Apple is crossing off the things that have been on my wantlist and that have bugged me for years. I finally feel that it is a more useful platform now. They should have done a lot of this stuff sooner, but at least they are doing it now.

Especially this SIRI thing though. Things like that push people to Android looking for other solutions. Now, they have one less reason. And that’s a good thing!

I agree, Apple is starting to be more open and I'll be honest, it probably was the threat of this lawsuit that made it happen. Ever since Microsoft embraced that they don't need to lock their software down to one OS, they've been on the rise. Apple needs to start thinking broader in terms of services, sure keep their Hardware / OS locked but don't lock down services that are supposed to make using your software/hardware easier to first class applications..

CarPlay getting Waze/Google Maps was a huge first step last year, glad that they're continuing to practice that. It's a challenge to the Apple Maps team that hey, you're not going to be protected by our preferential treatment, compete, be better, so that people make the decision to use our app over the competitors, nothing builds innovation like true competition..

I might be in the minority on this, but I'd love this functionality on SiriusXM's app!

SAME! As long as it comes in an update that doesnt manage to break some other random features. The SXM app has come a LONG way since its inception but their QA still needs work. Though most of my bugs are with CarPlay so not sure how much of it is them and how much is API limitations they try to work around.

Some of Spotifys complaints I understand, but even if you take those into account, Spotify currently doesn't utilise the devices to their full potential. Why are they not building in shortcuts? That's an easier way to integrate with Siri. Why have they not produced an Apple Watch app that stores music on the Watch? Overcast does it with podcasts. Speaking of podcasts, it isn't a good podcast player either. I don't want my music player and podcast player to be basically identical - these are different media, and should be treated differently.

I feel as though some of this is an excuse from Spotify for not pushing forward as much as they could. There are areas they are not held back on, and simply are not providing features. I'm currently moving to Apple Music, away from Spotify. Apple Music also has issues, and the "for you" generated playlists are not as good as Spotifies, but I feel like progress is being made with Apple Music.

nest and apple aren't the best of friends I don't think apple will ever support nest stuff. As far as lifx their HomeKit support is bad. Unless you use one color for everything or never change a scene in the lifx app and reset it in HomeKit. Its the biggest frustration with their stuff. Hue works amazing always.
It isn’t on Apple to make Nest stuff work. It’s on Google to do so. If Google doesn’t, they are only trying to maintain some sort of competitive advantage for Android. Amazon is the same way with their Ring stuff. They’ve been promising HomeKit support since before they were bought by Amazon and years later they keep saying some day. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I agree with you that Lifx is plain bad, period. I tried using their bulbs, since they make the brightest indoor bulbs in the business, but they are awful. They lose connection all the time, typically a day or two after you finally get them to “work”. After reconfiguring them several times after losing connection, and even then it sometimes many lights refuse to be seen in the Lifx app or the HomeKit app, I gave up on them and switched to outdoor Philips Hue, which is just as bright. There’s no reason you can’t use outdoor lights inside. Hopefully Lifx can fix their problems with a firmware update some day so I can take them off my closet shelf and use them again. I liked them when they worked.

HomeKit Secure video would be enough to get me to cancel my Nest Doorbell.
I have a Ring doorbell and use their proprietary service to keep videos on their cloud. I would certainly cancel and get me a HomeKit-compatible doorbell once there is a secure video option.

Here’s an example: I was at Square One and needed to get to a house around Dufferin Mall. I punched in the address in Google Maps and it was telling me to get up to the 401, drive all the way east, take the DVP down, take Richmond to Bathurst, then up Bathurst to Bloor and finally to my destination. What a weird route! So, I tried Apple Maps even though I didn’t like to rely on it for getting to time sensitive appointments. It gave me a far more direct route. QEW downtown, off at Jameson, and up Landsdowne to my destination.

Yeah but a lot of times when Google Maps offers a "weird" route I've found it's to avoid traffic or wrecks. Many times when I've ignored the advice because I think I know better I've regretted it.

I hope Amazon Music gets in on this for all of us Prime users

Yes! The Amazon Music interface is painful and even if it wasn't you should be using it while driving. I didn't realize how much I use Siri to play music I want until I started my trial.

Hope Spotify takes advantage of this, would be convenient. But then again they haven’t added split-screen to the iPad yet so I’m not holding my breath.

HomeKit Secure video would be enough to get me to cancel my Nest Doorbell.

I’d wait to see what Apple’s finished implementation of HomeKit Secure Video ends up looking like before I jumped ship from Nest’s doorbell.

Based on Apple’s track record, I have a hard time believing that the iPads or Apple TVs in my house will do anywhere near as good of a job recognizing that an object the camera spots is a person and then reliably notify me like Nest does in the cloud. If Apple has taught us anything about their privacy-first approach thus far, it is that there are usually performance trade offs.

lol good luck with Spotify adding support for that anytime soon. I don't know what their development cycles are like, but it takes them FOREVER to catch up with the latest available APIs and Frameworks. Took them months to catch up with the new screen sizes (first from the 4 to the 5, then the 5 to the 6, then the 7 to the X) and 4 YEARS to release a companion app for the Apple Watch. Took them a long time to add playlist sorting on the iPhone app, even though they already had it in the iPad app. I believe there was something with Spotify Connect being supported on the laptops and desktops, but it took them another few months to bring it to the iOS versions of the app. It will likely be 6 months to a year before they add support for Siri. They might actually surprise me though since it is on their list of complaints against Apple...
