And the reverse is true as well.. If the iPhone never existed I am pretty sure Spotify would not be around today (or be worth way less $$$$$ than they currently are)
Then who cares? No argument. My logic is based on the post I replied to where app developers should pay Apple for access to millions of users and my point is without apps, there wouldn't be millions of users. Apple already makes a kings ransom on the hardware. Let the app people make money too.

I think you have cause and effect backwards. “Apps” exist because of the AppStore ecosystem that provides world class development tools and resources plus access to a marketplace that is entirely created by Apple selling compelling devices that can run these apps. Let’s get the facts clear: It was the AppStore that bootstrapped the iOS app development economy — not the other way around.
Nice. If iOS developers all went away today, you're saying the iPhone would continue to succeed? Apps exist because there is a large number of people who chose to buy the hardware. Gas stations exist because people choose to buy gas powered cars. Should gas stations pay the car makers for access to the millions of car owners?

Reread my post. I didn't say they had to. They have thrived under Apple's Ecosystem. Are you sure this is anticompetitive behavior?
Spotify has thrived, on iOS as well as other platforms.

Being forced to give your direct competitor a 30% cut or otherwise be hampered in your ability to communicate with customers is anticompetitive.

These two things are not mutually exclusive. It’s very much possible for Spotify to be successful in spite of Apple’s anticompetitive acts.

Apple put itself in a pickle. Not surprised over they’re slow walking it because they’re unsure on how to proceed.

Wow so every time a company does not have their app approved by a certain amount of time they will just write an email to the EU and complain.
How about they just release the .ipa on their own web site, without waiting for Apple's permission?

Oh yeah, that's because Apple is illegally preventing it from working if they do that. Seems to me talking to the government that's going to fine Apple for their bad behavior is the right thing to do here.

If the iPhone never existed it would’ve been developed for a different smartphone platform.
Hmmm .. so why didn't they develop Spotify for the Blackberry, Symbian, Palm, Windows Mobile and other smartphone platforms that existed alongside the iPhone when it was launched in 2008? Could it be that the nascent iPhone market and the even more nascent iPhone development ecosystem were unique and essential for Spotify’s development and success? 🤔

Again missing my point... that Iphone market share would be heavily fractured if the iPhone never existed
Sorry, but that conflicts wildly with reality. Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and BlackBerry all used to exist. They do not anymore. The reality is that it’s been shown that the market will not support fragmentation and it will only bear a handful of major software paradigms within a particular market. Windows and macOS, for instance. Android and iOS. Developers form a critical mass around the most popular ones and the rest die off because collectively devs aren't going to support half a dozen paradigms for minimal ROI on that increased investment.

No. Not even remotely true.

Apps exist because computing hardware exists. There is not now and never has been a need for an "app store" for that to happen.

App stores aren't helping developers, they're in the way of developers, they're in the way of consumers, they're worthless middlemen that should not exist in the age of internet software distribution.

The ONLY reason there's an Apple app store is to facilitate Apple's rent-seeking.

and did Spotify make apps for those devices?

Why doesn’t Apple make their own country?
All they needed to do is to reply with “reviewing” and it would have bought them time. Being unresponsive can be more than just a bad look.
Apple does not reply to any developer to tell them app review status because the process to handle 2M apps and nearly 1M developers is automated out of necessity. Spotify can do what every other developer does: log into AppStore Connect and see whether their submission is “Waiting for Review”, “In Review” or any other status. Spotify is disingenuous and misleading the public to gen up political pressure.

Baloney. Spotify and Epic want access to over a billion iPhone users without paying a red cent to Apple for that access. Both are acting like the dicks that run them.

The only difference is Spotify is wise to notify Apple users to pay a subscription on the Web through the app

Unlike Dunce Epic in which did not take the Spotify route and we all know what happened

Apple has not approved a Spotify app update that adds information on subscription pricing and links its website, Spotify complained today in an email to the European Commission (via The Verge). Spotify says that Apple has not "acknowledged nor responded" to its App Store submission.

Apple-vs-Spotify-feature2.jpg

The European Commission on March 4 fined Apple almost $2 billion and said that Apple abused its dominant position in the market by preventing music streaming services from telling users about more affordable subscription prices outside of their iOS apps. The EC said that it is "illegal under EU antitrust rules" for Apple to keep developers from telling customers about cheaper music subscription options.

Apple was told that it must "remove anti-steering provisions" in the European Union, and so on March 5, Spotify submitted an app update that included subscription pricing tiers and options to pay without using in-app purchase. Spotify says that it has not had a response from Apple since submitting the update.

Spotify told the European Commission that Apple's lack of response is "yet another example" of how Apple "will seek to circumvent and/or not comply with the Commission's decision." Spotify asked the EC to require Apple to approve the app update.

In a statement to The Verge, Spotify also said that Apple's delay "directly conflicts" with Apple's statements about processing app submissions within 24 hours, and "flies in the face of the timeline for adoption" from the EC.The ruling from the European Commission that requires Apple to eliminate anti-steering rules is separate from the app ecosystem changes that Apple made in the European Union with iOS 17.4 to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Under the terms of the DMA, Spotify is allowed to distribute a Spotify app to EU users outside of the App Store, but it would be required to pay Apple's Core Technology Fee for each user. Spotify currently does not pay Apple any commission.

The DMA also permits Spotify to direct users to make purchases on its website while also providing information on in-app promotions, discounts, and deals, but again, Spotify would need to agree to Apple's updated business terms and fees to implement these changes. Spotify has not clarified if it adopted Apple's new terms or if its update has been submitted without doing so.

Most smartphones hadn’t yet progressed to that level of sophistication when the iPhone launched.

Let’s eliminate the abstractions so we can better see what’s real. Those legacy platforms (Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian, and BlackBerry) don’t exist anymore because the iPhone was superior and buyers chose the iPhone. This created an iPhone market that was attractive to both developers and service providers like Spotify. The combined movement of buyers, developers and service providers from the legacy platforms to the iPhone killed the legacy platforms and benefitted iPhone users, developers and service providers like Spotify.
